Do I Have A Torn Meniscus

Symptoms for a Meniscus Tear?

So.. My knee has been hurting for almost a year now. If I sit down, and don't stretch my left leg out, for more then 5-10 minutes my knee hurts like no other. It stiffens up way more then it should at my age, I am 14. So.. I really shouldn't have a problem but I do. Its right around my knee cap and sometimes it feels like growing pains but they last all night sometimes all day and night. At first I thought it was growing pains. But I doubt it could be now after almost a year. And its just around my left knee/knee cap. Today I drove from Ohio to North Carolina about a 6-7 hour car ride, and I was crammed in the backseat with my two cousins. and we had a bunch of stuff that made it more crammed. I could only stretch my knee out when we stopped at a gas station or somewhere to eat. Thats how crammed we were. We could hardly move to try to sleep in the car. And when I reached my home in North Carolina about 2 hours ago... My knee hurt so bad that I could barely walk. Even when I ate dinner I had my knee propped up on my kitchen sink, the edge of it so my leg wasn't actually in the sink. And we have the bar thing I guess you could call it where you can eat and it's like 2 feet from the sink. So I was eating dinner with my leg stretched out. And my dad seen that I was actually in pain because I was about to cry. So I told him around where my knee hurt and he felt my knee and he seems to think I have a torn Meniscus. I can't go to the doctor until my mom gets to North Carolina. She's in Wyoming right now, leaving Tuesday, and it takes about 3 days to get there by car because we are currently moving. So I probably won't be able to get to the doctor for a while. But I'm going to the doctor. But before I go.. I just want to know could that be possibly a torn Meniscus or something else? Please help?

Do I have a torn or sprain meniscus?

I am a 22 year old college student.
I do not play a sport
I woke up with pain in my knee last Wednesday.
I went to see the nurse the next day and she said it was likely a sprained meniscus.

since then my knee has swollen by 2 inches in circumference from where it should normally be and is in constant pain, but I can still walk on it I just can't fully extend it and due to the swelling I can't fully retract it.
while I can walk on it, it is more or less walking without a crutch, I use my good leg to drag my bad leg.
is this a sprain or a tear?

when I put Ice on it the knee rapidly overheats and within minutes its warm.

If I have a torn meniscus what risk would I be taking by snowboarding once?

I hate to tell you this but.........absolutely not. There are a few reasons why you can't go boarding. First off, since you didn't indicate, I'm assuming you don't know what kind of meniscus tear you have (i.e. location of the tear: medial/lateral) and therefore don't know the severity of the tear. If it's only a slight tear it may be able to heal on it's own. If you go boarding and tear it further you could need surgery or even a total menisectomy which will lead to a total knee replacement down the road. Also, if it's torn medially you could further tear it and end up with a Medial Collateral tear to go along with it. I understand if you think that since your feet are strapped in that your knees won't be twisting but when you board you do A LOT of medial and lateral rotation which will damage it further. Sorry man, but it's just not worth the risk when the likely hood is that you're going to mess it up even worse than it is.

Figure Skater: Meniscus Torn?

I know exactly what you're going through. I had a pretty serious injury back at the end of May during a soccer game. I tore my ACL (one of the most crucial stabilizing ligaments in your knee) AND my meniscus as well. This is on my right knee - my landing leg. I got an MRI about 3 weeks ago and the doctor confirmed that surgery was my best option if I wanted to be able to jump and skate like before.
I had surgery 5 days ago, and they reconstructed my ACL and stitched my meniscus back together. Because I had two serious things repaired, my recovery time is going to be almost a full year. The doctor said I'll probably be able to skate again in 6 months, but no higher level jumps, back sits, and flying camels for a year.
If they choose to repair it surgically, you'll have a longer time off ice while you're recovering, but you'll almost certainly get back to skating like you could before. Depending on how bad your meniscus is torn, with just physical therapy there's no guarantee of how much you'll be able to do again. Because I also tore my ACL, I chose surgery for sure because even though it means being off ice for a while now, I know that eventually I'll be able to skate like I could before (double loop/flip level). If you get surgery, your recovery time will probably be less than mine because it's only your meniscus.
If you want more advice or have any more questions, we should trade emails somehow! I'd love to hear updates on your injury and recovery. Let me know!

Do I have a small meniscus tear?

Hi tanner,

The meniscus is the cartilage between your femur and tibia. It acts as a shock absorber between these two bones and helps them glide smoothly over eachother. Without the meniscus, your femur and tibia would be grinding on eachother. The meniscus can be torn several ways such as lifting something heavy, taking a wrong step, and landing awkwardly, but it is usually torn by a twisting motion of the knee because the femur slides off causing the meniscus to become trapped and then tear. Sometimes a pop, click, or ripping feeling can be heard/felt at the time of injury. Symptoms of a meniscus tear are pain located on either the outer or inner side of the knee, swelling that usually occurs 2-3 days after the injury, a buckling or giving out sensation, the inability to fully bend or straighten the knee/leg, popping or clicking in the knee, and knee locking.
You could have a meniscus tear without it causing lots of problems. I tore my meniscus in April by playing basketball. My knee did not hurt and didn't swell, but would loudly click or pop everytime I'd bend and straighten my leg out. Honestly, if it wasn't for the clicking/popping I wouldn't have gone to an orthopedist because I had barely any symptoms. Like I said, my knee did not hurt, swell, lock, buckle, or give out; just pop when bending and straightening. So, I went to an orthopedist (bone and joint doctor) who examined my knee and sent me for an MRI. I got the results back and I had a significant meniscus tear that went both vertically and horizontally. I had to have knee surgery to have the torn part removed.
Anyway, because the pain's gone and you don't have bad symptoms, you can probably get back to playing. Just be careful and don't ignore pain. If pain is coming back and you're knee is getting worse, see an orthopedist again as they specialize in this area and will provide the most/best help. They may send you for an MRI after examining your knee.

Good luck with your knee!

I have a torn meniscus I want to get it regrown and repaired. How much should I save for this operation?

First we need to know if your tear is reparable or not. There are certain types of tears which are reparable. Inherently meniscus is a tissue with low blood supply. So if it’s a peripheral tear then it’s reparable, if it’s a long segment tear then it’s reparable. If it’s the tear that has occurred after injury then it’s reparable.Second how much time has elapsed from injury? Longer the duration of tear , decreased are the chances of healing.A typical meniscus tear needs around 4 arrows as implants. In our country in such cases depending on the hospital set up and class of bed it costs roughly 2 lacs to 2& half lacs Indian rupees

Is it possible for a person with a torn meniscus to walk?

Yes it is. It is especially easy for older people who have gradually torn and worn their meniscus. Also many people are self-disciplined and do what they have to do despite strong pain. Go to a physical therapist , via a Dr of course in the USA, and have it examined by an expert on mechanical/sport /trauma injuries that is a physiotherapist.

Torn ACL/Meniscus -- Do I really need surgery?

Well, It depends on how active you want to be/stay. Usually surgery is recommended to prevent further injuring the other ligaments and also restores the stability in the knee. As to when You will be walknig (after surgery) depends on how your knee is feeling and what your doctor recommends. Every one is a little different and most doctors rehab protocols are different too. Walking after injury also varies from patient to patients. also MOST of the time ACL surgery is not performed til a month after the injury for two reasons:
1. Regain range of motion, reduce swelling/inflammation/pain
2. Pre- surgery rehab to regain some strength back in the leg.
Are you able to walk at all? if so try walking a little more each day with a friend.

With a torn meniscus, what body weight exercises can I do? I have been using kettlebells, but I don't want to cause any more damage.

Torn meniscus is a serious thing. I am not sure how you can even think of exercise with such a painful condition. My suggestion is to wait for your Orthopedic surgeon to give you a go ahead. Doing even body weight squats without completely recovering can further aggravate the condition. As other poster mentions. This is clearly something for your doctor and not quorans.
