Do I Have Some Kind Of Mental Issue

Do I have some kind of mental disorder because I like being alone? Being not alone is alright I guess, I prefer alone though.

While you have been accustomed to more exposure and frequent or intermittent interactions with others, this state of appearing over magnified since its quite possible that you deserve a sabbatical and this small break will help you ever energetically re synergize and be back well in the midst of the happening of things.Have faith and do not get over anxious since what you are speaking of is more with those who are peculiarly and typically being so for several periods of times almost as if that were their second nature? They were never inherently born with that and neither are you; so its neither depression or mental illness. In fact, in those spaces/gaps of time, seek to cultivate your interest in furthering a hobby’s development or watering the plants or tidying up or going for a walk in the garden or reading a book or watching something that is intellectually inspiring or other such note worthy activities that are appropriately addressing those time frames instead of being mired by thoughts of anxiousness or otherwise.

Does every person develop mental issues of some kind over time? How is it defined?

Simple, we are all mentally ill to some extent or other… just we’ve allowed a group of individuals called psychiatrists rule the roost when it comes to this subject, and they know jack sh*t about anything to do with mental illness. FACT - Psychiatry is the ONLY science which has NO PROOF OF IT’S CONTENT!

Why is talking about mental health issues such a taboo?

I think people are still scared of the idea of mental illness and many in fact refuse to admit it even exists! It certainly does not help that the media does not deal with the issue of mental health in a positive manner.

I am a teacher who has suffered with mental health problems since I was 15. Growing up in a Catholic family it was not to be talked about and I was told to snap out of it. This of course led to me keeping my feelings well hidden. When my mental health continued t deteriorate I never felt I could talk to my family. The shame was unbearable.

Now as a teacher, I never hide my mental illness, even the students I teach are aware of my illness - as I feel education is the only way forward. Whilst I was slightly nervous as to how they would react - I was amazed at how many of them had already had experience of it via their family etc. Many asked questions that maybe they had wanted to ask for a long time.

I cannot say the same of my colleagues - many did not feel comfortable around me and found it difficult to understand and accept my illness. In fact one headteacher asked me if I thought I was "stable" enough to work with children!!

With mental health it is so important that you fee comfortable talking to someone who understands - and yes taking the mick is a form of therapy!! The stigma attached to this most debilitating illness has to be rid of.

Did any of the beatles have some kind of mental disorder?

Lennon was probably bi-polar, but I've never seen any official diagnosis. Apparently, he tended to fluctuate between the extreme ends of the emotional spectrum (based on the accounts of the people who knew him).

As Oliver mentioned, he used to beat his wife when he was in his early 20s, but stopped as he got older (see the song "Getting Better"). However, that was much more commonplace during that era -- men were rarely arrested for domestic violence & abuse back then. And Western culture largely accepted it as a husband's "right". They weren't arrested for raping their wives either, believe it or not. That was similarly considered a man's right. So, I'm not sure if his behavior can be attributed to a mental illness or not. Perhaps, but I'd probably attribute it to societal norms at the time & the culture he grew up in. He was actually one of the first celebrities of that era to own up to it & speak out against it, which is more than can be said for most men of that era.

@Alexis -- Lennon didn't just experiment with drugs. He was a heroin addict (see: Cold Turkey).

Can anybody help me figure out if my sister has some kind of mental disorder?

Why’d you mention it.Clarifying your doubts, means you harbour some underlying fear. Well for a fact , no one is normal, rather all of us to some extent have features of abnormality. We all face tough times dealing with life’s struggles, but poking into others life isn’t advisable. Everyone has their own personal life to live, so avoid disclosing anyone’s issues just for your clarification. Do something constructive and engaging, rather than finding faults in others and comparing things.Whether you think things are good or not, its might be your perception of reality. What good will come out of you figuring out someone else’s problem. Keep your thoughts free from such confirmation bias. The reality is not always what we see. The whole picture explains what is and what isn’t . But don’t promote this idea further, bury it. It will bring no good, so be at peace and be mindful.

What kind of doctor should I see to get a mental disorder diagnosis?

You can start addressing mental health problems a number of ways. Given that the practioners you speak with are all licensed professionals, you can start with any one of these. You can start with your M.D. internist or general practioner, and ask them for a referral to a therapist or other mental health professional. If your problem has organic connections, for example substance abuse, some types of depression or anxiety, an MD can examine that part of the problem, while still giving you a referral. For the most part, they are not as skilled as psychiatrists in prescribing psych medications. You could go to a psychiatrist, who is an MD with a specialty in mental health disorders. Because they have had medical training, they will also know if part of the problem might be organic. Psychiatrists are experts in prescribing psychiatric medications, if these would be helpful for your problem. Generally, psychiatrists don't do psychotherapy ( some do), and will refer you to a therapist if appropriate. You can go to a clinical psychologist or psychiatric social worker, or other licensed psychotherapists. They are trained to provide psychotherapy, even though their training may differ. Generally, a psychotherapist, if needed, can refer you to a psychiatrist for evaluation for medication ; or an MD internist or other medical doctor if that might be helpful for you.All of these providers can offer you some help. Sometimes, they can work together - psychotherapists and psychiatrists often are involved with the same patient, and work together to help. Finally, it's up to the patient to decide which professional you can work with to solve the problem. Don't be hesitant to ask questions, and see how you feel about a particular professional. If you know someone who has had treatment for a mental health issue, you can ask them for a referral if both they and you are comfortable talking about it.Good luck.

Polls: do you have a mental illness?

I think everyone does to some extent. A better question would be if mental illness keeps you from being a fully functional adult. When I'm by myself I ruminate a lot about things that happened a long time ago and no longer matter. It all seems to revolve around past regrets and how I wished I would have differently handled someone or a situation. I would be one of those weirdos you see in public talking to themself. I wish I could get it to stop but I can't. My solution is to keep my mind occupied with other things. Most of the time it works but sometimes it doesn't. In spite of that, I have a job, I have a house, I pay all of my bills on time, and not only do I take care of myself and do things for myself, but I also help my mom take care of my 84 year old dad with Parkinson's who can now barely get around inside the their house. I also have meaningful coping skills and can effectively deal with people and have wised up enough over my life to know when people are treating me like I'm stupid and are trying to play me. So because I also stand up for myself and come across as being selfish I also get called a sociopath. I've learned that being called a sociopath or actually even being one is a matter of perspective. A lot of people that have labeled me a sociopath don't realize that their abusive behavior towards me also makes them a sociopath, and especially so when they hide behind children or that fact they're a woman in order to get me to do something that I just don't want to do or have to do for them.

What mental disorder do I have?

I'm so sorry to hear this. This is a tough place that you're in - I don't know what I'd do if I lost one of my parents.I don't even want to think about it.First of all, I'd like to say that there is nothing wrong with you. You're a human being. You're suffering from grief, shock, anger, rage. You seem to have clinical depression. Everything you describe yourself as feeling is totally understandable given your circumstances.Stop fighting your feelings and tying yourself into knots resisting yourself. Obviously, resist any temptation towards violence - but I didn't need to tell you that, you're doing that already. I believe it is recommended that you take out your anger on a passive object...I'm not really sure that's the answer, though.I'd recommend reading When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron. As others have said, you need professional help. To start with, go see a counsellor. Your school should have one. There's nothing shameful about seeing a counsellor. Many of my students have been; adolescence is a tricky phase, even when you're not faced with such a huge personal loss. Tough guys seek psychiatric help. It takes guts to see a psychiatrist. See what facilities your school offers first, but do go to the psychiatrist. They can prescribe medication.Good luck. And, if it's worth anything, hugs from a total stranger on the internet.
