Do I Need A Cd Drive To Install Windows

Which option do I select to install Windows from the CD drive?

There are two types of firmware at boot legacy and UEFI.Firmware is the piece of software that acts as an interface between the hardware(motherboard) and the Operating System. Legacy Mode refers to BIOS firmware. Basic Input/Output System(BIOS) was the first popular firmware for desktop PC introduced in 1975 by IBM for its CP/M OS. Even though it is still widely present, computers have evolved tremendously and BIOS is unable to provide advanced features of modern hardware. Unified Extensible Firmware Interface(UEFI) is the successor to BIOS. UEFI uses the GUID Partition Table (GPT) whereas BIOS uses the Master Boot Record(MBR) partitioning scheme. GPT and MBR are both formats specifying physical partitioning information on the hard disk. Below I have listed the difference:Max partition size in MBR is ~2TB whereas in UEFI it is ~9 ZetaBytesMBR can have at max 4 primary partition whereas GPT can have 128.MBR can store only one bootloader whereas GPT has a separate dedicated EFI System Partition(ESP) for storing multiple bootloaders. This is very helpful if you have two or more operating systems which require different bootloaders.UEFI offers secure boot which can prevent boot-time viruses from loading.BIOS is pretty much outdated and UEFI offers many useful features. Thus it is recommended to install any operating system in UEFI mode. Note: One can't install in UEFI mode by booting in legacy mode.

Why do I need to remove HDD to do a clean install of Windows 10 on a new SSD?

In My experience, it’s really not necessary to remove the drive. Just unplug the cables of all of other drives except that of your boot drive (the one to which you want to install Windows) and your CD drive, if you have one. Install Windows and you will find that your boot drive has been given the letter C and your CD drive (if you have one the letter D.. After running windows once, reinsert all of the cables to your other hard drives and you will find that they have been given a nice letter sequence - D, E, F, etc. It they are not in the sequence that you like, you can go into Disk Manager and change the letter. The important point is to disconnect the data cables from all of you other drives so that you can be sure that your boot drive is assigned the letter C. That is the preferred letter for the boot drive. Booting from a different drive and then having your OS on a different drive can be confusing and is to be avoided. Good luck.If you already have an installation of Windows on a different drive, then you will need more advanced advice. Many of us who clone an HDD taken out of a laptop to a new SSD that we have put in simply format the HDD after we are sure that it has gone well and use it as a secondary drive for storage, etc.

How do I install a game from a CD without a disk drive?

Using a PC that has a CD/DVD drive, extract an ISO image from your CD. There are many free tools around for that purpose, a quick internet search will get you there (e.g. using the search terms “extract iso tool windows”)Transfer this new ISO image to your own PC, for example using a USB key.On your PC, mount the ISO image using a specialized tool. Again, many around for free, quick internet check will get you there (e.g. using the search terms “mount iso windows”). By the way, Windows 8.x and 10 can mount ISO images without the need for additional tools, just double click the file. It’s not inconceivable that your CD has a copy protection which will make this whole operation a bit more difficult as you’ll have to figure out which protection was used and how to circumvent it. At this point in time, you might want to consider buying an external DVD drive that you can plug in via USB.

I have a Dell laptop without a CD drive and I need to install a program from a CD, what are some other ways I can install the program?

There are many applications to turn a disc into an ISO which you can virtually mount. What I do, and do note that I am broke so I don’t have a good way of doing this, is I put it in my laptop, turn it into an ISO, upload it to my Gmail, send myself the Link in Skype on a group with just me, download my own file (I don’t have a USB stick I can really put in and those I do have are slower than the net) and launch the ISO.You mentioned your LAPTOP not having this though and I assume your family do not own another computer so I would go ask a friend to install the ISO making program and bring the disc around.

Once you are in the Boot menu, you will see a list of devices. This is the order of devices that the computer will attempt to find an OS on. Typically, the first device listed is the computer’s hard drive, usually followed by the CD/DVD drive.Select the first boot device and change it to your flash drive. The menu will either say “Removable Device” or will display your flash drive’s model name. This will make the computer check your flash drive first after turning on, instead of the hard drive.Save and exit. Navigate to the Exit menu in the BIOS.
