Do I Need Any Rights For Nightcore Remixes To Play Them In Clubs

Can I be sued if I sing copyrighted songs in public but don't accept payment?

Playing music at home at for a gathering of people you know is not considered a performance for these purposes. We are talking about a gathering of (at least some) strangers.Live performance of a song is covered by having a compulsory license from ASCAP (or BMI. For simplicity I'll just refer to the songs available from ASCAP). "Compulsory" in that the songwriter has no say in whether or not you can perform; you pay, you play. Any/every song on the list covered by ASCAP (or BMI).Generally the ASCAP license is paid for by the venue, not the artist performing. So if you are at a bar, nightclub, concert venue, or Carnegie Hall, the ASCAP license was paid for and arranged by the mangers of the building. In fact any city park that has a band stand or outdoor arena/stage has also paid that fee. (The licenses are generally annual.)Exception: churches don't have to pay for an ASCAP license for music used in worship. So we are really just talking about you playing on a street corner or in a subway. In other words, busking (whether for pay or not). So legally you have to get a "performance license" that covers your right to play. That's about $700 per year. But be aware that the enforcement mechanism is sending an invoice to your mailing demanding money or threatening a substantial copyright infringement lawsuit. The bill is likely to be for $10s of thousands, the lawsuit for $100,000 or more. But the practical concern here is: Is an ASCAP representative going to hear you play and how is he/she going to know your name and address for sending the invoice/lawsuit? A business has an address, so it is really hard for them to avoid enforcement (also this is why businesses owners are the primary one responsible for the license). ASCAP, BMI and SESAC Force Local Coffee Shop To Shut Down Live Music. But how are they going to know your identity?Lastly, whether or not you are making money is irrelevant here. The legalities of copyright for songs doesn't depend on making money.

What kind of music do the most intelligent people listen to?

Typically smart people listen to music what appeals to their own taste, while stupid people listen to music which appeals to their group of reference. Smart people tend to be individualists while the lesser endowed of the cerebral performance tend to be herd souls. But there is a correlation - not causation - between IQ and musical taste; the higher one’s IQ is, the more he or she prefers complex melodies and lyrics, while the lower it is, the higher preference on rhythm. There is also a weird - really weird - correlation between latitude and musical preference: the closer one’s home is the Equator, the higher the preference of ‘light’ musical styles like reggae, soca or calypso, while the higher the latitude and closer to poles, the higher the preference of ‘dark’ musical styles like heavy metal. Unfortunately, latitude and IQ has also correlation: the average IQ tends to be the lowest on Equator and rise towards both poles, North and South. My own experience is that the most intelligent people tend to prefer classical music and prog metal. The reason is simple: classical music is extremely complex and full of all kinds of melodic and harmonic variations and decorations - and prog metal is today’s classical.Other “heavy” or “hard” styles, such as nerdcore, death metal, hero metal, experimental rock, progressive rock and art rock tend to be also popular amongst the highly intelligent. If someone likes Queen, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, David Bowie or Led Zeppelin, he or she is likely to be quite bright. Many highly intelligent are also into jazz, bepop, jazz rock and crossover styles.

What are my fellow 15-year-old peers listening to?

I was going to write a huge list of songs but instead I decided to put a few here that best represent the type of music I listen to at the moment.I'll start off with my all-time favorite song:Seven Lions - Keep It Close (feat. Kerli)It's belongs to an interesting subgenre of EDM….something like a strange melodic dubstep.I love it.Another song that I listen to frequently is this:Carolina Liar - Show Me What I'm Looking For (Video)The music video is meh, but the song itself is great. And who could forget Basement!YouTube <- Basement - Promise EverythingReally dig the drums in this one.Oh yeah, the intro of one of my favorite youtubers also happens to be one of my favorite songs:[Electro] - Laszlo - Supernova [Monstercat Release]Linus is the best!!Something I blast in my car while driving home on a Friday:Katy Perry - Birthday (Cash Cash Remix)The perfect song to wrap up a successful (and stressful) week of school. When I need a song to lift my spirits:Ahxello - FrisbeeDem positive vibes tho.RAVVVEEEEE:Zomboy - Like A BitchBRAWP BRAWEP NEJEMMERMMRMMMMRRMWhen you need a little bass in your life:[Trap] - Noisestorm - Heist [Monstercat Release]So satisfying to the ear.Powerful and chill:Velvetine - The Great Divide (Seven Lions Remix)It's hard to find tracks like this these days. What some would refer to as “hipster music.”Neon Indian -- Polish GirlHipsters must have good taste in music!A song that I listen to when I’m sad and I feel like wallowing in the pool of my own distress.Trouble - Coldplay;(Another one of my favorite songs:Fink - 'Warm Shadow'Really chill acoustic song that incites confusing feelings….makes me feel sort of depressed and excited at the same time…damn good song. There are plenty of other songs and genres that I haven't covered here (note the lack of alternative…), but this should give you a general idea of what my musical tastes are like as a 16-year-old. (My apologies for being a year older than the age group in question….I couldn't resist a chance to share my music preferences with others)

What's the best way to find a song name if Shazam doesn't recognize it?

If you have an iPhone then use Siri and Siri will recognize the song and will tell. The only flaw with this is if there is other noise it may not be clear and can mess it up and if the song is not published then it cannot recognize it.

What music do data scientists usually listen to while working?

Here are the four albums I  mostly listen to when I find it hard to focus:Soundtracks: The Social Network  (spotify url: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – The Social Network):  I especially like 'in motion' -- somehow listening to  it  makes  me think and write code faster... About Time (spotify url: Various Artists – About Time):  'About time' is my favorite movie of 2013. Listening to this soundtrack reminds me of my feelings when watching the movie. Classics:Bach by Jascha Heifetz (spotify url: Jascha Heifetz – Bach: Partitas & Concertos pour violon (Les indispensables de Diapason) ) I simply love J.S Bach and Heifetz! Electronic:Random Access Memories (spotify url: Daft Punk – Random Access Memories) : theme of work -- even with only Fragments of Time,  we are Doin' it Right!

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to a lot of music, it’s basically the only form of media I consume. As a result, I listen to a wide variety of music.Power/Progressive/Symphonic/Thrash Metal - I used to think Metal was all shouting, but then I found about these genres, and now I mainly listen to these subgenres of music. I like these subgenres of Metal for the sheer energy, clean vocals, and lack of generic Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus structure. Some songs from the genre I like:Pop Punk - I’ve always been into pop punk, but I only really started to get into it during the month of July. I mostly listen to Pop Punk with my other friends who listen to pop, and when I am in an “edgy” mood. I like a whole bunch of bands, but my favorites from this genre are Panic! at the Disco, Set it Off, and Billy Talent. Some songs from the genre I like:Rap - Although I don’t listen to Rap often, I do enjoy certain artists quite a bit. I like quite a bit of rap. On the serious side of things, I like artists such as Eminem (I know, very cliché. In my opinion, Eminem is an artist that I believe is popular and not overrated.), Logic, Aesop Rock and Kendrick Lamar. All of these rap artists have meaningful lyrics which contribute to my enjoyment of them. On the opposite spectrum, I listen to rappers such as Froggy Fresh, Tech N9ne, and certain Pokemon Rappers (I used to be a huge pokemon nerd). These rappers don’t have the most meaningful lyrics, but I like the humor. Some songs from the genre I like:(The first 6 minutes are just backstory, feel free to skip it)Avante-Garde Music - Avante-Garde music is very experimental and weird, and they aren’t afraid to be very different from regular music. It’s really weird, but good. I like it when it’s done well. Some songs from the genre I like:So yeah, I have a diverse taste in music and if you give me music to listen to I’m willing to listen to everything atleast once.
