You know, I've checked into three motels in the past month and I can't say that any of the clerks asked for my driver's license. They did want my credit card (duh!). If you want to drink alcohol, you will likely be out of luck, unless you look old for your age. Most places card anymore unless you look over 30. I was still getting carded when I was 42! If you do, make sure to ask about the cancellation policy, because once you give them your credit card number, they have the right to charge you if you cancel within a certain period of time. When you check in, they will ask for your ID and a credit card. The ID will have to be either Driver License, ID, or Passport. Some hotels require that you are 21, because restaurants at the hotel serve alcohol, or the in-room mini bar might. Sso you might want to call and ask first. They will swipe your credit card and let you know the rate. They won't charge anything yet that night... the next day when you check out, the balance will be billed to the credit card. They will ask how many keys you want, and then give them to you, and that's it. You can have other guests in the room without registering them. You can usually have up to 5 guests in a room with two doubles, but reservations will be able to tell you this when you call.

Do all people staying at the hotel need to show their ID ?
The person booking the room is the one who will be asked to show ID. It is not even necessary for you to go into the lobby to register with him. If you seem nervous they may become suspicious and you don't want that. If he chooses to pay in cash, I imagine they will still want ID, but they will with credit card for sure. They may not even ask for any if he pays with cash, but he should be prepared just in case.
