What are some spontaneous things that you did with the people you love, that made those moments special and memorable?

Many years back.I brought my then five years old daughter to the mall. As we passed by a home-made ice cream stall, she asked excitedly:“Daddy, can I buy some ice cream?”“Sure, why not!” I replied. She glanced through all the different flavors and asked:“Can I have three scoops?”“I don’t think you can finish three scoops and a cone”“I can, I can” she eagerly assured me.“But three scoops on top of a cone can be difficult to eat, you might drop it” I tried to dissuade her.“No, I won’t drop it.” She insisted.A few minutes later, she was happily holding an ice cream cone with three different flavors stacked on top. As we walk away from the stall, within ten steps, the ice cream dropped on the ground. In my heart, I was thinking:” I told you so!” but I didn’t say it out loud because she looked so disheartened.I did not have anything on me that could clean up the mess on the ground, so I used my hands to grab as much of the ice cream as I could, and hurriedly ran to the nearest washroom. While I was washing my hands, I was thinking to myself:” Perhaps it is a good lesson for her to learn.”As I walked out of the washroom, she was standing outside holding on to the empty cone. She looked at me as though expecting me to scold her.I didn’t.She felt a sigh of relief and began biting on the empty cone.“Stop and give me the cone!” I said in a stern voice. She immediately handed it over, assuming that was her punishment.I took the cone, held her hands and led her back to the ice cream stall.“The cone taste better with ice cream on it!” I said with a smile.“How many scoops do you want?” I asked.“Two scoops! Daddy!” she replied with delight. In such a short time, I saw her emotions went from joy to sadness and disappointment; fear to surprise; and finally, back to joy and gratitude.Did I send her a wrong message? I don’t know.Am I spoiling her? I don’t know.I only know that this is a special moment for us.A moment where there is no right or wrong, no lessons to be learned. Just love, unconditional love.

What’s the strangest thing your boss has ever asked you to do?

I was hired to take the fall for a boss that was embezzling funds. Thankfully, this blonde isn’t as dumb as he thought.I was hired to work in an office but there wasn’t much for me to do other answer the phone and vacuum the carpet which made me feel a little bit weird. I was only making minimum wage but still I was getting paid for doing practically nothing. I had been there about a week when the boss gave the other woman working in the office Friday off and then he announced that he was taking the same day off to take his wife to NYC to see a Broadway show. That meant I was going to be the only person in the office that day. He took me into his office and left the door open so that the people in the office next door could hear. Very loudly he said, “HERE’S THE KEY TO THE SAFE. THE COMPANY CHECKBOOK IS IN IT IF ANYONE ASKS BUT YOU SHOULD BE ALL BY YOURSELF. AND HERE’S THE KEY TO THE FRONT DOOR SO YOU CAN OPEN UP FIRST THING BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE GETS HERE.” Then he left early to go pack for his trip.Nobody gives the new employee all the keys and checkbook and leaves. So, I went to his brother-in-law who was co-owner of the business and told him about it. He asked other people if they heard what he said and they verified my story. Brother-in-law counted the checks and the cash and locked it up. Then he came back next morning and opened up and the cash and checks were gone as expected. My boss got busted and booted out of the company. He got kicked out by his wife, the brother-in-law’s sister. And he also got 3 years in jail.

What is it like to live in Portland, Oregon?

I moved to Portland, OR from Austin, TX and have lived here for 24 years. Portland, OR is a beautiful “air-conditioned” city. Temps are mild all year round. The only negative weather wise are the grey skies - not the rain - but GREY OVERCAST skies for ~ 260 days/year. The city receives 38 ins of rain a year (the right amount for the city not to have water problems with some margin) - the same as Austin, TX, but Austin gets over 300 sunny days/year, we have 120 !! The sunny days start from July and end in October. The overcast conditions can take a toll on you - but if you live here long enough, it is something you can get used to.The suburbs are neat, clean, and tidy, and thanks to the Urban Growth Boundary (designed to prevent urban sprawl), property prices are constantly on the upswing. Rental prices are high and creeping up on an ongoing basis. The people are friendly and neighbors look out for each other. Most importantly, Portland has the best water I have tasted anywhere. The water comes from the Bull Run Reservoir, and is essentially purified/treated melted snow. It doesn’t get any better than that. No calcium buildup in the pipes, and no need for a filter or desalination system for the home. The restaurant scene in Portland is awesome. You can find a plethora of restaurants and cuisines from every corner of the world here. Korean, Thai, Indians, Filipino, Japanese. Ethiopian ….and the list goes on. Best of all, the food in these restaurants are of a very high standard. The traffic can be bad on weekdays. The highways seem to be clogged and backed up most of the time from 7AM-6PM. Weekend traffic is OK. The pop influx is clearly outpacing the ability of the highway infrastructure to absorb the influx. On balance, Portland, OR is a great place to live and a population magnet. Is it any wonder that Portland as a city & OR as a state ranks #1 in terms of population growth ?

What are some great startup ideas for young entrepreneurs?

I have often wondered the same thing! Scalability is king, since you want to start small with relatively low risk. Maybe you don't have the skills or experience of older entrepreneurs, but you have the energy and the probably the backing of your parents as an asset. I have seen many a young person begin in the construction industry, ending up with their own contracting services. Something like a painting company is cheap, easy, and scalable. Wholesale items or drop shipping could be a nice passive source of income, though I wouldn't base an entire business off of it. Begin a food cart, selling hot dogs, burgers, pancakes, coffee, snow cones...really anything. These can be built and run for under a few thousand. You could of course start building an app and make millions and millions overnight...or you can put in the effort and learn from the school of hard knocks! Best of luck!
