When you borrow something, you should treat it like gold. When you return something back to someone, it should be cleaned, gas up if it is a car and put safely and correctly where the person wants it. Don't borrow something for long periods of time. Do recompense someone promptly if what you borrow gets lost or damaged - they should not even have to ask you for it - you should be apologizing and handing them the compensation up front. The one exception to this is If someone has told you in advance to use something and not to bother asking permission, go ahead and use it.
