Do Laws Against Hate Speech Also Protect Straight White Men

Where do you draw the line between free speech and hate speech? If free speech is what we want, then is it alright if my speech would hurt a few people's feelings? If I'm restrained from expressing my opinion, what happened to my freedom of speech?

I don’t agree with a lot of the hate speech permeating the internet these days. However, I have to say that hate speech is yet another form of free speech. People are entitled to believe whatever they want and express their beliefs freely. However, in a society with free speech, anybody can counter their speech with more sane speech and debunk their bogus claims. I might not agree with what a lot of these hatemongers say but I will defend their right to say it freely, without any government suppression of their speech. When someone is spewing hate speech or believing the lies of such speech, you have to tell them WHY they shouldn’t believe such things nor subscribe to such ideologies. Any intelligent person who’s genuinely looking for the truth, will eventually learn to not take hate speech so seriously and they’ll become good at debunking it too. I feel much safer around someone who’s a reformed racist, homophobe or other bigot who GENUINELY understands why their past ideology was wrong, than I feel around people who reflexively shut down hate speech out of pure conformity. All it tells me is that such conformists would just turn on me and become an immediate threat to me, should the hatemongers ever get their way and become more popular. But I can understand why some people can consider restrictions on hate speech to be a necessary evil. Not all people are rational interlocutors seeking objective truths. It’s really easy to let other people do your thinking for you. It’s easy to fall for flawed belief systems that massage one’s ego and make them feel exceptionally special. It’s easy to hang on to the accomplishments of your race, country, or other group, as a source of pride (rather than actually going out and achieving things that you can personally take pride in). It’s also easy to engage in ‘othering’ for the purpose of blaming all your troubles on some external group, rather than tackle the real source of one’s problems. But then again, people like Donald Trump got elected because PC culture went a little too far by infringing upon people’s free speech. This is what I had always feared would happen someday.

Why do non straight men hate Salma Hayek

@TxRose those kind of rumors are probably started by some chicks who want her to be lesbian, she is married and have kid, i know married people can be gay too but they wouldn't go that far when they know being lesbian would just make them hotter

If a straight white conservative faked a hate crime on themselves in Chicago would they have all charges against them dropped?

Hate crime is something that has to be defined. In fact, for any crime to be a “crime”, there has to be a law that spells out the “parameter” by which the charges are brought and what defines guilt. In the case that we’re allegedly talking about, It would be the same in any city, unless it was specifically “on the books”Did the incident “cause” hate? for sure.was it intended to do that ?In the media, It was alleged that Smollett did it for attention. That part, while reprehensible (if true) and sad… is not against the law. That is not what they could charge him for. Apparently they did not.If they had evidence that he filed a false report and that this cause the city of Chicago to spend resources and impact law and order, they have the tools to do that. That is most likely what happened. We do not know everything that happened with the charges. It might be normal for false reports to be negotiated like this. It could be possible that the Circus that happened was costly and continuing it, did not justify the risk of continuation and getting a different or “better” outcome. Also, there could have been some mistakes made in the investigation, that made this the best move for the liabilities at hand. This was certainly “tried” in the public sphere. We in the public need to realize that the “costs” happened. We cannot make up laws or have other laws stand in just when we are outraged. That’s how it has to be.Someone could write a statute and get it placed in the civil code. The danger is that once we get “specific enough” we also map how someone who’s intent really was “hateful”…. could get around the law.

Hate crime laws are they racist?

That is a very good question that many people ask but, hate crimes can vary depending on the individual. Most of the time they are racial but, not all of them have to deal with racism. Hate crimes can be a dislike for a certain group such as Feminist are against those who are against women how fight for their rights which still happens today but, is not seen a lot like it use to be. Hate crimes are everywhere but, if you look for it then you will be able to find it. One thing is to remember not all of them need to be racial in nature because hate crimes come in different forms.
