Do Leap Year Babies Represent Something In Chinese Culture

Which was the worst thing in Chinese history: the Cultural Revolution by Mao or the Japanese Invasion China during WW2?

I would disagree with both. In my opinion, it’sAn Lushan Rebellion - WikipediaDuring the rebellion, Chinese people experience the similar atrocities they suffered during the Japanese invasion. Sacking of cities was very common. Men were either enslaved or killed. Women were raped as well. The population had to flee with hunger. Many died because of famine. The rebellion lasted 7 years, and killed 13 million - 30 million people. That’s extremely high, considering that this was in 8th Century.Another candidate, in my opinion, isTaiping Rebellion - WikipediaHong Xiuchuan rebelled against the Qing Dynasty in the 19th Century. He established the Taiping Kingdom. This rebellion turned the Total War, as every Taiping citizen was trained to fight to the last. Both sides also conduct a scorched earth strategy to destroy each other. This ended up with a destruction of 600 towns and cities. Millions were executed intentionally by the Qing and Taiping armies alike. This could be an act of genocide to the Chinese by the Chinese themselves. The rebellion lasted 14 years. The Qing government had to hire westerners to crush the rebels. This finally cost at least 20 million lives. This dwarfed even Chinese losses in the Japanese invasion, didn’t it?Another interesting candidate, especially to the Cultural Revolution here isGreat Chinese Famine - WikipediaThe Great Chinese Famine in Mao’s era. This was the consequence of misconducted policies during the Great Leap Forward. At least 15 million Chinese died in 4 years of hunger. This event significantly affected Mao’s prestige in the Communist party, so he had to conduct the Cultural Revolution to purge people whom he believed to be his opponents!

Do Chinese people's names really have a meaning?

The answer is yes.Chinese, unlike many other language, doesn’t have some names so you can choose. When parents in China named the babies, they will consider the meaning of the name. For example, one of my roommates(a girl) called 胜男. The character ‘胜’ means ‘win’ or ‘exceed’. The character ‘男’ means ‘male’. Her name literally means ‘better than male’. It shows the wish of her parents. And I have to say, she perfectly fits her name.As each Chinese character has dfifferent meaning, some parents will put together some character with good meaning to named their kids. One of my friends, ‘慧莉’, would be a good example. Her name is combined of two character, ‘慧’ and ‘莉’. The character ‘慧’ means ‘intelligent’ or ‘wisdom’. And the character ‘莉’ is refers to a kind of flower called ‘jasmine’, usually used by parents who want their girls become beautiful. And many well-educated parents will reference some ancient Chinese books such as The Analects of Confucius, Menzi, Daodejing, The Book of Songs, Lisao, to named thier babies. My name, for instance, is comes from The Analects of Confucius. My Chinese name is ‘思齐’, comes from the famous saying ‘见贤思齐焉,见不贤而内自省也’. This saying means: when you meet some one outstanding, you should think of equaling them; when you meet someone of a contrary character, you should examine yourself not to be like him. So that’s what my parents expect of me.

Why do people think all chinese eat dog and cat?

Do the chinese eat dog and cat?
My friend says that all chinese people eat dog and cat but I don't think that ALL chinese people eat dog and cat. I think maybe some percent of the culture does but not everyone. I don't know if she is referring to american people with a chinese ethnic background too though. I try to tell her that not all chinese do but she interrupts me and says "yes they do, yes they do" And its really bothering me, i mean i dont even know where she heard this from. But can someone give me the details on the subject please. And please only answer if your really know about this topic.

Is it true people in China eat Babies?

No, people in China prefer teenagers. Its India that you were thinking of. Babies are considered a delicacy there.

What does the year of the dog mean? Do the Chinese eat more dogs this year or no dogs?

Well…Stop accusing Chinese for eating dogs anymore, please! I beg you!Firstly, 99.9% of Chinese never eat dogs. Eating dogs is just a local custom that has never exceeded a few counties. Other Chinese and I have repeated this for multiple times. I won’t repeat it anymore.Secondly, let’s focus on the Year of Animals. For an approximate explanation, this year-recording system is similar to zodiacs in astrology. You have Years of Mouse, Cattle(Ox), Tiger, Rabbit, Chinese Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep(Ram), Monkey, Chicken(Rooster), Dog and Pig. They come in circles, so the Chinese zodiac of this year is always the same of that of 12 years ago. You have Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc., don’t you?Chinese zodiacs are also a kind of culture. They have many subtle or nuance meanings that may sound ridiculous to foreigners. But, I can assure you, that any Years of Animal doesn’t mean we will eat more of it this year.
