Don't say it's sexist to pay the manager more because I've had several female managers and at the moment I have a female CEO. Higher positions pay more and women can and do get into higher positions. Also men are more likely to get stuck with overtime. Women who work 9 to 5 won't get paid as much as guys who burn the midnight oil. Some women jobshare (4 hours each). It's good that they have this option but sharing a job also means sharing a salary. In my current position, I get paid $28 per hour. The women in the office also get paid $28 per hour. How is that less? If the company decided to pay women less per hour for the same job, they'd be breaking the law. Ella, you must do your bit to bring the average income for women up. Instead of doing an art major or getting a job as a hair stylist, study STEM and get a high paying job. I think there should be more women in high paying engineering and medical fields. In answer to your original question, women become dependent on men not due to lower pay but due to marriage. When two marry they become emotionally dependent on each other and function as a single financial entity. They provide each other with emotional support and function as a family unit. Men and women enter into this union willingly, not due to financial coercion. Neither of them has to say "I do" if they don't want to.

Governments, at various levels, need a military, court system, police, patent office, etc. We can quibble about what a government should or should not do, but it needs to do some things, and there’s almost no argument against all government.So because the government needs money, it needs to usually collect taxes from the citizens. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait operate on this model. Norway sells a lot of oil as well, but also collects fairly high taxes.A government could invade other countries and take their wealth. This is partially what colonial governments did, it was more or less the model of Nazi Germany, and it was used extensively by the Roman Empire. Not a good long term model in today’s world.Governments could print money, but this creates hyperinflation eventually, and then no one wants the money any more.So for almost every country, taxes are required to fund the government. At this point I’m not of the opinion most employers are actively trying to pay women less than men. Women on average do earn less than men but the often quoted $0.77 to $0.80 figure takes the average of all men’s salaries and all women’s salaries, which is a misleading figure to use when there are more men in senior positions (that’s certainly an issue that needs to be addressed but it’s separate from a wage gap). I am of the opinion there is still a pay gap that needs to be addressed but a lot of it will require women to put in effort to get paid what they deserve.Women are less likely to negotiate their salary than men and those that do negotiate are often less aggressive. This is largely cultural as girls are often criticized for being bossy for the same behavior boys get praised for. This makes women grow up less likely to negotiate. Women should be taught to be more aggressive negotiators and as more women do so employers will get better at expecting it.Many companies rely on past salaries to make a job offer. Between being less aggressive in negotiating and more significant discrimination that took place in the past it’s easy to see how this could hurt women. California has now made it illegal to use past jobs to make salary decisions and I think this should be made a federal law.Paid family leave isn’t available to most women and childcare, especially for infants, is often cost prohibitive which causes many women to leave the workforce for some time. Being out of the workforce depresses wages. This is both a public policy issue (paid family leave for both men and women can very easily be funded with a tiny increase in payroll taxes) and a cultural issue (childcare is seen as primarily a woman’s responsibility which can affect career decisions many woman make).

What really chaps my as* is the women who get pregnant on purpose without the man's permission so they can milk him for child support. When they're in court they say "it takes two to tango" when they know full well they wanted to get pregnant. There are some really horrible women out there. But here's something to think about---it's easy to use a man for money when you're young and tight and hot, but there will come a point (I call it plastic surgery age) when you will no longer be able to do this. These women find themselves broke, no job skills, no man to pay their bills. They usually end up on dating sights or in bars trying their hardest to look as hot as possible so someone will take them home. Take comfort in this fact.

Also, it is unrealistic to support most families on one income, and in many families the woman makes more money. If you make $200,000 a year, and she makes $10,000,000 a year, it would make zero sense for her to quit the $10,000,000 a year job. Paid family leave legislation is being proposed in the United States, and can be equally used by both men and women. Many companies do provide maternity leave for the mother, but the science is telling us that paternity leave is important too. It is better for children that the father has a chance to bond with them as well, and giving the father that opportunity to bond with the children actually encourages them to do their fair share of childcare and housework. This makes it easier for women to stay in the workforce rather than leave.

Also, if people started to approve this, the employers would be FORCED to maintain inhuman control on the workers, else, they would do nothing, since they know that they get the same paid. Being a doctor DOES NOT EARN YOU MONEY, what makes doctors earn money is how many surgeries they do. So, the doctors in a hospital would be supervised as hell, liberty would be sorta gone. People should try to stop being jealous at those who work extra... You get what you give! Want more money? Work more....hard, but it's the only fair way.
