Do People Still Use Flip-phones

Why do all Japanese people use flip phones?

I'm sure that there are some exceptions, however, all the Japanese movies and videos talking about Japan show Japanese people only using flip phones. I'm pretty sure this doesn't have to do with when the videos I watched were uploaded on the internet (one might say that people would use such phones in the past but now, due to the advances in technology, they've become obsolete, thus less used). This question might sound a bit dumb but it's something I've been thinking about for quite a few weeks now. Do Japanese people only use this type of phones because they are compatible with the features offered by Japanese cell phone carriers, such as TV or videocalling, which aren't common or, at least, cheap, in other countries around the globe?

Thanks for taking the time to answer this!

Why don't people use flip phones any more?

Flip-phones are great! But carriers pretty much forced users out of them.

My new phone is retro-style - it has a full physical qwerty keyboard in addition to the touchscreen (BlackBerry Priv) and with the flip-case it sort of feels like a flip-phone.

Plus, screens have become so much larger than the Motorola Razr days if they were to manufacture a flip-phone now, it would likely be a foot long when opened (which might be kind of cool, actually) but most wouldn't like it.

I want to find / buy an old flip-phone I used to have (Pantech C300) - I loved that little phone! I think it was supposed to be the smallest flip-phone ever. This question got me thinking - I'm going to get one and have it as spare. No updates. No hassles. A phone-phone. Thanks !

Do people still use basic phones/flip phones?

I don't know what to get my parents for Christmas, so I was thinking a phone (they need it for emergency). My parents are in their 50's and a smartphone would probably be too complicated for them to use. I was looking at T-Mobile plan pay as you go and was thinking about getting them the 1000 minutes for 1 year which I'm sure they won't even use up all the minutes, so it would be perfect for them. However, most phone nowadays are smartphones.. I see flip phones too but nothing current.. I saw a flip phone from t-mobile "Samsung SGH T139" which would be perfect for them. Problem is the phone was released 3 and a half year ago. It's perfect for my budget, but wouldn't a flip phone be somewhat outdated? I don't want them to feel embarrass whipping the phone out in public (especially at church where all the cool parents have smartphone and such),, Yes I know who gives a damn what people think, but at this age in time, do we somewhat have to upgrade? Or maybe I don't want to get them a smartphone because I'm cheap and on a budget LOL... But I was thinking to myself the other day, "If I was old and grey, I would rather get a flip phone." What do you think?

Do you still use a flip phone?

Everyone I know over 50 uses a flip phone. I'm sure there are 50+ users of smart phones, but not that I know. They won't stop selling them as long as there's a demand for them. Older people like the ease of use compared to a smart phone and saving the extra $50 a month...I can't see paying the extra $50 a month for a micro screen you can't' even use while you own a computer to do stuff fast and efficient.

More and more people these days need to do more on their phone that simply talk and text, and few flip phones, other than a select few like that provided can fit their needs.Gionee W909 - Full phone specificationsAlso checkout the Alcatel GO Flip from T-Mobile. Nice. But many people in developing countries are still using them. Elders are using them in record numbers. And those with dexterity and visual issues are also using them.I have the Alcatel 768T as a backup device for travel or a night out for dinner when I really don’t need to drag along a much larger and heavier smart phone. As long as it has voice commands and bluetooth for driving, that’s all you really need sometimes. Many are still being made in dual or triple sim card format for use by travelers and in business, to take advantage of cheaper calling rates when possible.

Why are people so embarrassed to have a flip phone?

because some people think it's outdated, and like with clothing or other items, need the latest fashion or technology to be current. i started with a flip phone for my first phone in high school (i'm 28), and moved up to my iPhone 6 currently. But I had flip phones, a bar phone, an android phone, an iPhone 4s and my iPhone 6. my dad used my old flip phone for four years until he got an iPhone 6 when me and my mother got all of ours at the same time.

like you said, since you have an iPad, you feel you don't need a smartphone. often times, an iPad can do everything a smartphone can, and there are some apps where it can make phone calls if you have a SIM card and data plan with it.

If you're comfortable with what you have, I don't see the reason to switch just because everyone else is. Though that could change when you get older as well.

Smartphone or Flip-phone, which do you use?

I know smart phones are way cooler and people look at you like you're in poverty when you pull out your flip phone at a party but consider this. If I lose a smart phone I'm out 400 bucks at least, plus the contract which I have to honor so I have to buy a new one, so I'm out $800. If I lose a flip phone its basically free, or the price of a McDonald's.

Second, who do you know who will steal a flip phone? Okay some but not many.

Third, I can't read email on my flipper but I can on my tablet and I can do anything on my tablet that you can do on your smart phone except make calls. So why do I need a smart phone? Convince me please.

A significan't other is trying to get me to upgrade but I'm resisting.

me, i used to use flip phones and i loved it.its been a 3 years though. my smartphone broke and i started to use the old flip phone. my friend pushed me to buy a smartphone sadly. it was a mistake. she really constantly talked about how much i needed it and there is this samsung which is great and she got it too. yada yada…i didnt mind to not being able to “connect” and be “reachable”. I enjoyed the freedom. a friend even enviously said how lucky i am and i probably wouldnt need to charge it often. it has it perks. you dont pull out your phone to be distracted while on bus or train. in hindsight its a waste of time spent on it anyway. if people really needed you, they would have to call or text. I would have loved to be smartphoneless for a longer period, but as mentioned i was kinda stupid :/my thought was waiting for a good phone and saving up, but i settled for the next best thing. nowadays i find it harder to not have a phone as there are useful apps which i use daily. one of my friends doesnt have a smart phone. she said its not that bad, she checks fb once a day. for emergencies, you can always reach her phone. she is an overachiever, so maybe this is also a strategy of hers to keep focused. my grandmother has a smartphone. her chidren gifted it to her. she likes to watch youtube and videochat with it.so in conclusion. it depends if you use all the apps. if youre just using your phone for calling like in the old days, there is really no reason for a smartphone.

Many people all over the world use flip phones young, old, male, female, professionals, and so forth. Not everyone needs, wants or can use a smartphone. Many people use them for the basics, talk and text. Elderly use them because they’re easy. Business people use them as a backup device. When I’m out to dinner I use my old Ericsson T39m flip phone. Excellent battery life, small, compact, supports voice commands, and bluetooth for driving.Travelers use them as they’re cheap and easy to replace if lost, stolen, or damaged, as in water damage or tough physical activity as well.In some countries, like India, Kenya, Spain, and other countries, many people use 2, 3 and 4 sim card cell phones to take advantage of the much cheaper calling rates by using specific carriers over another one. You, and I will both be ditching our smart phones one day, and start using a flip phone as our need for them diminishes, along with our eyesight. But until that day arrives, maybe in 20 years or more, keep hammering away at your phone. And if you have extra money to burn and want to make a regular smartphone quiver, buy yourself one the many Samsung smart flip phones from China, or the Gionee W909 that would make every flip phone green with envy or just purely jealous, and for good reasons too.
