Do Tornados Go In The Mountains

Can tornados bounce off mountains?

Not really. Tornadoes thrive more in flatter land, where there are no large geological obstacles (e.g. Great Lakes, mountains, etc.). Also, tornadoes typically move with the weather system carrying them, generally west-to-east. If a tornado hit a mountain, it would do some damage to the side of a mountain. However, it would try to move through the mountain, which saps its energy. Pretty much, it's like a bowling ball rolling into a wall.

In short, if a tornado hit a mountain, it wouldn't bounce off. It would just weaken rapidly.

Mountains and storms : do mountains break storms up?

I live in North Carolina and there are storms heading our way. They say they may be severe. I live about 5 hrs away from the Appalachian Mountains...and i have always been told when storms go through the mountains, they tend to break up and become weaker.
is this true ?
thankss

Can tornadoes hit hilly/moutaineous regions?

Tornadoes can hit anywhere. I forget the source on where I found this from, but a tornado has been recorded to have hit all 50 states in the Union. They are much rarer to touchdown west of the Rockies though, but Salt Lake City got hit by a tornado on August 11, 1999. It also doesn't have to be raining for a tornado to hit. Tornados are formed by rotation in ominous cloud. Usually it may rain real hard first, then you get that sudden break in the rain and that eerie silence, which is usually a sign a tornado may be possible. Then if it is a tornado you'll hear the sound of a freight train, or a loud roaring sound. Usually once that's all said and done the rain picks up again.

Do mountains block out bad weather such as tsunamis, hurricanes and tornadoes?

yes they do as well as bad thunderstorms a snowstorms.

What do you think about people who follow tornadoes around to get data, video and photographs?

Some people surf or climb mountains. Others go in caves or to the antarctic. And some people chase storms. While some pursue thrills or photographs others like combining their passion with science.

Can humans live without mountains?

The impact of weather and climate will be significant, but there would definitely still be habitable spots. I think that overall, habitability of Earth without mountains will be slightly lower because…In some areas such as Eritrea, many of the biologically highly productive areas are on plateaus or in mountainsMountains increase available water around them, through snowmelt and glacier melt, and also through uplift of air, which usually leads to more precipitation on the upwind side of the mountainsGreat plains tend to get those nasty F5 TornadoesWhat I am wondering about is why Earth wouldn’t have mountains anymore? Did the continental drift stop? Whatever caused that would likely also be an Everyone Dies scenario ;).

Why does Tornado Alley exist?

Take a look at this map for a second.Okay. See the big brown smudge in the western half of that picture? That’s the stretch of land more or less where you will find the mountain range known as “The Rocky Mountains.”Apparently that range of mountains blocks moist air from the pacific allowing colder air to come down from Canada to the north.See the area just south of Louisiana? That blue thing? That’s the Gulf of Mexico. It contains a lot of warm air. It moves north into that same area where the cold air from Canada moves into.Now. Let me ask you something. What happens when you are under water and you have an iflantable toy, and you swim to the bottom of the pool and you release the toy. What happens? It rises rapidly to the top of the surface. Now, when low pressure warm air meets dense. cold air that dense cold air is like water, and that warm air is like the toy. It’s going to want to rise rapidly. This causes an UPDRAFT, and that is what is the basis of a mesocyclone within a supercell causing the rotation. This is pivotal (literally) in the development of a tornado.Because of the way in which Tornado Alley happens to occur on Earth, it allows this to happen all the freaking time.As far as places on the Earth go, there is no other place anywhere that makes conditions so very ripe for Tornadoes to occur as this unfortunate plot of land that we call Tornado Alley. It receives roughly 75% of the yearly quantity of Tornadoes on the earth because the conditions are so good. There are also a number of other factor that contribute that aren’t listed here, and believe it or not, some of those reasons aren’t yet investigated fully by climate scientists or meteorologists. These are things that are constantly being studied, and new stuff is being uncovered intermittently as the years pass.
