If you have a stomach virus, does it always make you throw up?

I have a huge phobia of vomiting, and have never puked in my life (other than gagging up a teaspoon of stomach acid once). Do all stomach viruses make you puke? Or can they just give you diarrhea? I have had times of major diarrhea but have never thrown up. Could that be my will power?

Just very nervous about this all. It controls my daily life, being afraid that I am gonna puke. Any help? Any experience?

Why do some people never get the stomach virus(throwing up), yet people like me have it once per year. How do I be like the lucky ones? And why do I get it once per year specifically?

You have to think about what you are doing around the time of year when you fall ill. There are many different causes of stomach upset…not all of them viruses. If you are on a cruise ship and begin to feel sick you can probably count on having picked up the infamous Novo virus…or seasickness. If you live and work on a farm with animals and vegetables you might have a touch of food poisoning from cross contamination.. or a zoonosis. If you are beginning a school year when something “is going around” you may be one of the fortunate students that comes down with “it”. And then there are emotional reasons. Some people feel everything in their stomach, others their head and others their heart when it comes to pain. There is usually no mistaking a virus, however, with its accompanying vomiting and diarrhea, and maybe fever and a headache. Emotional stomach aches are more subtle. You didn’t say how old you are but the younger you are the more your immune system will be building defenses against future bugs. It will settle down after awhile when you have build immunity to common organisms.

How does a person catch a Stomach Virus?

The "stomach virus" is commonly caused by the Norwalk virus. It usually last about 24 hours for most people.

It can cause watery diarrhea(almost like you are urinating out your bum!),projectile vomiting(can be messy!),fatigue, nausea and stomach cramps.

DO NOT take diarrheal relief medication if you have this virus. The virus is shed via bowel movement. If you take a anti diarrheal, the virus will stay in your body longer.

Who wants that?

The ONLY way to get this virus is to INGEST contaminated fecal/vomit particles through your eyes, nose and mouth.

It is NOT airborne unless you are standing next to a vomiting person and ingest the aerosolized vomit particles.
It is VERY important to wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 15-20 seconds before you touch your face, prepare food/eat etc. Hand sanitizers do not work against this virus.

It is also very important to wash your hands after bathroom use to prevent spreading the virus to others (whether you have symptoms or not you can still pass it on if you have the virus)

You should do weekly cleaning with a bleach/water solution on all common areas like door knobs, light switches, faucet handles, toilet flushers etc. ESPECIALLY if someone is sick.

If someone is sick, do not share utensils and be careful on how you wash them so you do not cross contaminate.

If you have this virus, you need to let it run its course.Stay in bed and rest.Do not eat anything unless you have stopped vomiting for at least 4 hours.Sip water instead of drinking it.It IS however very important to keep hydrated.

Hope this helped.

Samantha P, don't reply unless you know what you are talking about.A water bottle will not help your inflamed intestines. And it's NOTHING like the flu.

If you had a stomach virus, Will it also live in your bedding?

Norovirus which is one of the most common stomach virus's, can only live on a surface for 72-96 hours. Also it is contagious only if someone (or your bedding) came in contact with your vomit or feces. When you get the chance I would wash your blankets and such, just so they will be clean, but the virus is not still living in your bedding.

Does fever accompany a stomach virus?

My 2yr. old has been vomiting all morning, and I thought it was stomach virus, but he's now running a temp of 103. I didn't think fever was a symptom of a virus? Anyone help me out? BTW; I'm waiting on a call from the doc. now, so don't tell me to call a dr.

Can I get reinfected with a stomach virus from myself again?

Echoing the previous answer I think the wording in the question is a bit off-putting.. practice good hand hygeine and clean surfaces.. but as for the question of whether or not you can reinfect yourself… this depends on the cause of your gastroenteritis.. if a virus, then you will have at least partial/temporary immunity from your antibodies (eg: I think norovirus is like 6 months-2 years with some immunity after infection). However, if your “stomach flu” is caused by bacteria (eg: e-coli/c-diff) then you are dealing with a whole different ball game.. think like strep.. where you have to get a new toothbrush and clean surfaces well or you end up reinfected.. so.. your answer all depends on exactly what organism caused your stomach bug..

Why have I suddenly been getting very sick with stomach viruses? My family doesn’t usually get sick. Could this be a more serious issue?

Are you diagnosing yourself or has your physician diagnosed you with “stomach viruses?” If this is a self-diagnosis then I suggest that you consult a physician and let HER/HIM make the diagnosis and treatment for you. If you have been diagnosed by a physician as having “stomach viruses” and the treatment that this physician has rendered to you is not helping you then I would suggest that you get a second opinion. And most important of all, be sure to follow the recommendations of your physician.

I have had this stomach flu for 4 days?

Get to an ER. They will not refuse you because of insurance. There is medication you can take that will keep you from neaseousness and vomiting that is much better than pepto bismol, but its perscription.

I think 4 days is a typical time frame, and you say you are feeling better so i wouldn't worry. Rest and you will be better.

Stay away from dairy products. Try eating rice and toast. White rice, plain. Try driving juices also. What kind of solid foods are you eating?

Go slow with eating but don't dehyrate yourself. Even if you are vomiting what you eat, you need to stay hydrated. It's important!

Best of luck I am hoping you will feel better soon!
