Do Universities Look At Sophomore Grades A Lot

Bad grades freshman and sophomore year?

I was a good student in my first two years of high school until junior and senior year, it went south.
Went to community college then transferred to my dream university for my degree that I'm still working on.
Your freshman year is not as important. I know people that did horrible in freshman year but did good in their soph - senior year. They got accepted into good state schools and some UC's.
On your essays for applying to good colleges, do explain what the heck happened and why you got the grades you did. They will look into it.
I live on the west coast, so I don't know what it's like in NC.

Unless you're like a football star at your high school, as in recruitment and scholarships. Some of my friends were accepted into top schools including out of state with average 3.0/3.25 gpa. That's.. actually low!!!!!!!!! BUT it was due to their athletic abilities which gave them the pass, with a kind of decent gpa.

Will you go to college? Either way yes... if you continue this way you will look at Community College (but you can always transfer, they don't look at your HS records except things like language requirements).

If you work hard, volunteer, have athletic awards, take honor/AP classes.. it will show. But try your best to pull up your GPA. That means starting now! Don't blow the rest of your sophomore year. Can you retake the courses in the summer??? I did that for a math class in high school.
By doing that, on your transcript it shows that you retook it and your new grade will take place of your D or F.

You can do it!

Does sophomore year count a lot?

Hey guys... I've been a little stressed lately because finals are coming up... I'm studying right now... anyways, I was just worried that my grades this year (sophomore year) isn't as great as my freshman year. So I was wondering if colleges count sophomore grades a whole lot? And what about freshman grades, junior, senior, etc.
Here are my grades as of right now:

History(AKA my worst subject): 75%
English: 90% (borderline)!! D:
Math: 98%
P.E.:100%
Science: 82%
French: 81%

oh goshh these are so borderline... im trying my best to study D:
goshh finals.
anyways, thanks if you answer! (:

How much do sophomore grades matter in Ivy League admissions?

I don't know why this question has circled around again; it was asked in the fall of 2015, and put back into the street by the Quora bot in 2016. I guess I know they have a lot of nervous high school students online right now.At any rate, the answer is that no grades will be entirely ignored, nor will any grades be entirely decisive. That's what a "holistic" reading means. Perhaps this equally old answer will help you:Loretta B DeLoggio's answer to What is the most important factor to get into Caltech as an international first-year applicant?

Does Harvard University look at your freshman and sophomore grades (ages 15-16)?

Harvard looks at everything about you. Any reason to exclude you, such as bad freshman grades will indeed exclude you. Harvard will even turn away valedictorians with perfect 4.0 averages, because they get more applications from valedictorians than they have spaces for. And even if you have a 4.0 average, and you’re a world class musician AND football player, and you get admitted, Harvard also scrutinizes your Facebook postings, and may revoke your admission if you post something stupid, as you can read about in the Harvard Crimson.

How much do grades during freshman and sophomore years affect your chances of getting into a certain college?

I got a 2.85 GPA freshman year (which is an 88% average) and a 2.63 GPA sophomore year (which is an 85% average). Junior year, I'm going to get about a 3.6 GPA (which is a 94% average.) Will my poorer grades during freshman and sophomore years hurt my chances of getting into a good school? I have great extracurriculars, and I'm planning on getting an SAT score of 2000 or over because I've been getting SAT tutoring for a few months now, and I'm going to continue getting it until the fall when I take it. My school uses a very difficult grading scale, which is why my GPA is so low. In most schools, I would have received a GPA in the mid 3's freshman and sophomore years.

Thanks for your help, I need it!

Do colleges only look at your sophomore, junior, and senior year grades when deciding if you are good enough?

It depends on the school. Generally, they all look at sophomore and junior grades. Some count freshman grades (like the top privates), some don't (like the UC system). Senior year grades tend not to be counted b/c applications are usually due before the 1st semester senior grades are even out. However, many colleges will ask to see them anyways just to make sure you didn't tank your senior year, but it's not really part of their decision process of whether to admit you. It's more just to see if they should yank their acceptance.

How closely do Ivy Leagues look at freshman and sophomore year of high school?

As I have stated repeatedly before:The elite Private US universities will look at your complete official high school transcript using the mandated letter of recommendation from your guidance counselor (or head master) as guidance. That includes Anything that is on that transcript. They look Favorably on Improvement over time, and Favorably on Consistency once you have achieved a high level. And they will look at the letters of recommendation from your junior year teachers and your standardized test scores (including any mandated or recommended SAT subject tests) for substantiation.Less worrying and more enjoying high school. All the best.

How does a student whose sophomore grades slip get into a very good college (i.e., Stanford, MIT, the Ivies)?

You bounce back and nail all your course work in your junior year. Then, in your application you note what occurred, personally, to you during sophomore year. You also get two teachers from those junior year courses that you aced, to write you glowing recommendations bordering on you are one of the best students they ever taught.Additionally, you commit to and show some true passion in at Least one extracurricular activity.  All the best.

What sort of grades and/or GPA do colleges look for?

There is no set amount of B's that are acceptable, but obviously the more A's you have, the better. A GPA above 3.3 will give you a solid selection of schools across the nation, but will give you difficulty in some of the highest ranked schools. A GPA above 3.8 will open up almost any school to you, as long as you have a good SAT or ACT score as well.

As far as how to calculate your GPA, unfortunately this varies from college to college. Some will consider a B+ and a B to be the same grade. Some will give you extra points for an honors class, and some will only give you extra points for AP classes. In general, though, you can figure out what your GPA approximately is by turning every A into a 4, and every B into a 3, and then adding all of your points together. Then, divide by the amount of classes you took. This number will be your GPA. For AP classes, every A is a 5, and every B is a 4, so that is where the bonus comes in.

Playing a sport, having service hours, and being involved in other extracurriculars is a good idea. But more important than the amount of things you've done is the quality of things you do. You may have a big resume if you are in 10 clubs, but universities prefer that you focus on only a few and have something to show for it. Try to get involved in programs that you truly personally care about, rather than just joining organizations because you think it will be good for college.

Finally, while your parents' income is a factor in financial aid, it is not the only element. Scholastic achievement and potential are also considered, and you may be able to find a number of grants and scholarships. These types of aid come in many forms. Sometimes you can get a scholarships simply because you're left-handed and write an essay about it. Check with your high school's college center and see if they maintain a bank of available scholarships and application forms. It's never too early to start applying, and you may end up with thousands of dollars in free money when you enroll.

It sounds like you have a great start. Congratulations on all of your achievements so far. Keep working hard, earning those A's, and shooting for AP classes and you'll have a terrific shot at almost any college you want. Good luck!

I messed up my freshman and sophomore years...how can i fix it so that i can get into a college like howard???

The most obvious answer: do well your junior and senior year in high school to raise your GPA.

Besides that, make sure your application shows that you are well-rounded. Do lots of volunteer work and get involved at school (student leadership, clubs that you hold an office in, sports), take all the required courses plus more. Make sure you get good recommendations from your teachers and write a good personal statement (how you can continue the legacy of Howard University). I believe that it was my activities and ACT scores that got the attention of admissions. Another good idea would be to take some classes at a community college. And don't take your classes and GPA lightly from now on.
