What is structural functionalism, conflict sociology, and symbolic interactionism?

I had to look these terms up, but they turned out to be concepts I understood, at least to some degree.

Structural functionalism refers to how our cultural values in come together to form a structure for how our society functions on the grand scale. For example: we value consumerism, and that forms a society structured around the constant selling of goods for increased profit for businesses.

Conflict sociology is an area of study that deals with how societies handle conflicting forces. An example could be the ways think about global warming, which is conflict with the consumerism structure we value.

Symbolic interactionism refers to the cultural meanings behind how we interact with others on a small scale. An obvious example might be our conversations about political candidates, which indicate what we value in leadership roles, which in turn points to what issues we most want solved (and how we want them to be solved) in society at large.

Describe the structure of an enzyme?

Enzymes are biomolecules that catalyze (i.e., increase the rates of) chemical reactions.[1][2] Almost all enzymes are proteins. In enzymatic reactions, the molecules at the beginning of the process are called substrates, and the enzyme converts them into different molecules, the products. Almost all processes in a biological cell need enzymes to occur at significant rates. Since enzymes are selective for their substrates and speed up only a few reactions from among many possibilities, the set of enzymes made in a cell determines which metabolic pathways occur in that cell.
Like all catalysts, enzymes work by lowering the activation energy (Ea or ΔG‡) for a reaction, thus dramatically increasing the rate of the reaction. Most enzyme reaction rates are millions of times faster than those of comparable un-catalyzed reactions. As with all catalysts, enzymes are not consumed by the reactions they catalyze, nor do they alter the equilibrium of these reactions. However, enzymes do differ from most other catalysts by being much more specific. Enzymes are known to catalyze about 4,000 biochemical reactions.[3] A few RNA molecules called ribozymes catalyze reactions, with an important example being some parts of the ribosome.[4][5] Synthetic molecules called artificial enzymes also display enzyme-like catalysis.[6]

Enzyme activity can be affected by other molecules. Inhibitors are molecules that decrease enzyme activity; activators are molecules that increase activity. Many drugs and poisons are enzyme inhibitors. Activity is also affected by temperature, chemical environment (e.g., pH), and the concentration of substrate. Some enzymes are used commercially, for example, in the synthesis of antibiotics. In addition, some household products use enzymes to speed up biochemical reactions (e.g., enzymes in biological washing powders break down protein or fat stains on clothes; enzymes in meat tenderizers break down proteins, making the meat easier to chew).

Isn't depression overrated as a mental illness?

I think a small, very small percentage of children on ADHD meds actually have that condition. Just as a baby functions better on a consistent schedule, I believe children function better in a structured classroom setting. Many public schools today do not have the classroom structure they once had, due to open classroom settings etc. I would bet that public schools have a higher percentage of children diagnosed with ADHD, compared to private schools. Has anyone done a study to compare them? In many schools the primary function of the school nurse is to give out meds. It's a sad commentary on our educational system. No one seems to be looking at that. A serious debilitating depression does need medical attention. The loss of a parent, loss of a child, living under certain circumstances is reason enough to be depressed and a pill isn't going to fix it. There are some situations that a person can change but there are also ones they can't. Assuming we don't have a serious debilitating depression , why can't we just be ourselves? Happy, sad or whatever? Just recently, a warning was issued that said that teens on antidepressants need to be watched carefully for signs of increased suicidal thoughts. If it can effect a teen this way, you can also assume it can effect adults this way too. P.S. I agree with what you said and I think the professional people we expect to get the answers from don't always have the answer or the solution.
