What age do you stop spanking your children?
All I have to say is my oldest is 11 and I have not problem taking her over my lap if it's needed. She did get spanked a few times in her 10th year, and knows that she vary well could still get it if she breaks our core rules. I think spanking works well for "children" which I classify as ages 2-12. The teen years i think are preparation for adulthood, they could still get punished, but I don't think I'll use spanking. Also as children get older and mature, the need for spanking is less and less. One hopes spanking won't be necessary in the teen years. Personally I don't think it is, but every family is different.
Is there an age limit to spanking a child?
i would hope that no one would ever spank baby under 2 yrs old. but usually if the child for sure knows what they are doing is wrong. wow i would not go over 12. teens are different. just take away phones, comps, etc and ground them.
What age did you stop spanking your children?
Okay, well my 16 year old was complaining the other day about the fact that I choose spanking as his discipline method. He says that no one else his age gets spanked. I know this is a lie, as I got paddled in high school until I was 18. I told him this, and he said that he gets much more swats than a paddling typically consists of(which is true) and that in a paddling, you can keep your jeans on(I spank him bare bottom). Well, I spanked him for whining, but It still made me rethink my parenting methods. Look, I know that spanking as a punishment is declining, but has it really declined that much? When did you stop spanking? Did you ever stop spanking bare bottom? I'd love to hear you're methods on this. Thanks. =)
Is slight spanking ok as one of disciplinary tools for my child?
I am not against A smack but not at this age. The best thing for tantrums is IGNORE. Step over her and keep going. As long as she gets no response she will soon stop. My daughter only threw about 5 and using this technique she soon stopped. Time out DOES work if it is done properly. Not occasionally but on every bad behaviour the DO stop. I have well behaved children who when 2-4 saw timeout a lot . Now the are 7 and people go out of their way to tell me how lovely and well behaved they are. Remember..one smack can work (if used sparingly) 2 smacks is a sign you can not control yourself (have to admit i have done this too, no one is perfect but try to realise when you are going to go further than you wish and give yourself some time out, go to your room and have a read for 5 minutes, just take yourself out of the situation. Kids can drive you nuts at times). Wait 6 more months till you smack. You baby will not fully connect the action she did to the smack
If you agree that occasionally spanking a child is acceptable, what age do you think is a child too old/young to be spanked or smacked? Are there restrictions or rules of thumb you apply (using only a hand, keeping their bottom covered, etc.)?
When my first child was old enough to get his bottom smacked, I asked my mom about the dos and don'ts of spanking. She successfully raised 4 of us, and we all got spanked when necessary.Her rules were:Never hit so hard you leave a mark. If you're angry with the child, walk away and calm down before you punish him.One well-timed, well-placed smack can often be more effective than a spanking. If you spank sparingly, it's much more effective when you do it. At that point, the kid knows he committed the “ultimate crime”.There's no set age to stop spanking. You just know when it's no longer needed, or no longer effective.I'll give you an example of Rule 2 in action.Mom had taken my kids somewhere. The younger one was just a toddler and my brother was carrying him as they went out to the parking lot to go home. The older boy was probably 4 or 5. Mom was holding his hand as they started through a traffic lane crosswalk. And that was a rule - you held her hand when there were cars around. No exceptions, no excuses.My son decided he was too big for that, pulled away from her, and ran into the crosswalk by himself. Mom caught him and gave him a good smack on his butt. He stopped dead, looked at her with a shocked face, and said “Grandma! You SPANKED me!”Mom grabbed his hand, and said “Yes, I did. And I'll do it again if you EVER do anything so stupid again!”He never objected to holding her hand in traffic again. He's 22 now and just mentioned “that time Grandma spanked me in the parking lot” a few days ago.
When are children too old to get a smack on their hands for inappropriate behavior?
A smack on the hands for inappropriate behaviour? It will not recommend it at any age. Distracting a young child to stop inappropriate behaviour, and then correcting it by mutually friendlier way is always a more practical answer. Smacking a child will hurt his self esteem.Frequent smacks will only frustrate him making him overly timid, or overly stubborn. It will not stop inappropriate behaviour.

The last time my father ‘spanked me’ I was 16 yrs old [64 yrs old now] He had this thing about us boys, ‘BEND OVER AND GRAB YOUR ANKLES !” And he would use a belt.The last time he did that he swung that belt five times and five times I started ‘LAUGHING’! He got pissed then, he turned it around and used the buckle end, I LAUGHED HARDER… [Dumb teenager didn't know any better] Then, he stood me up and said, “SO YOU THINK YOUR A MAN NOW, HUH? WELL YOUR WHOPPIN’ DAYS ARE OVER!!! FROM THIS MOMENT ON, I’LL TREAT YOU LIKE A MAN… FROM NOW ON!”Two weeks later, our report cards were ‘mailed’ home instead of given to us. I seen Dad at the dinning room table and he said, “Bill, give me your keys.” [I had problems with it running rough and I gave up my keys] … “When these grades come up, you’ll get the Keys back!” I was pissed and I said, “I BE A SON-OFVA-BITCH!!!” Well, Dad had what I call ‘Selective Hearing Disorder’ and the only thing he heard was ‘SON-OFVA-BITCH!!!’ Then he motioned for me to come closer and like a good son, I LEANED IN and met a LEFT UPPER CUT! [He was left handed]I woke up an hour later in my bed with a swollen jaw and a loose tooth!I seen him and ask him why he belted me in the jaw like that… his answer.“BOY, LET THAT BE THE LAST TIME YOU EVER CALL YOUR DEAR ‘OL DAD’ A SON-OFVA-BITCH!!!”“Dad, I never called you one… I SAID, I BE A SON-OFVA-BITCH !!!” [My Dad and Mom was divorced when I was a lot younger] … His reply: ‘Well, you are!” and went back to reading the paper!*NOTE*This happened in the late ’60s and ‘CHILD ABUSE’ was clearly not well known. Years later, when I was on the County Police. I ask my step-mother where Dad was? She said glued to that TV on downtown court. I went in and seen the case he was glued to: A woman was taking her father to court for child abuse! She was 30+ yrs old and he was 60+ yrs old. The case came after 15 yrs.I glance over at Dad and said, “Dad, remember when you use to whip Larry, me and Eddie with that belt?” He turned to me with a worried look. “And you used the buckle on me…[I started laughing] …DON’T WORRY, I WON’T FILE CHARGES!!!” He had a few choice words for me, then I took him to our favorite ‘watering hole and bought him a beer!
