Do You Broadcast Your Birthday

What if no one wishes you a happy birthday?

Hey Seeker! This question is actually pretty apt, since my birthday is around the corner, and this is what I've been thinking about too, of not receiving birthday wishes voluntarily.A few years back, I did try this. I made my date of birth invisible on social media sites, around a week before my birthday. And a few hours before my birthday began, I put my phones on ‘do not disturb’ mode. And then, around 11:20 pm, I tucked myself in, and slept cosy. The next day, except for calls from work, and one from home, I didn't take or make any communication. Surprisingly, I felt pretty relieved, calmed and at peace. Since I wasn't looking for birthday wishes at every single second of the day, the lack of those didn't really affect me. In fact, I felt freed from societal obligations of behaving good and wise even when you would prefer to not really bother. Two days after my birthday was a weekend. That day I actually sat down, and went through my social media accounts, and very surprisingly, a handful of people had still remembered my birthday, and wished me, in spite of me having taken down the birthday notifications and details. My phone wasn't flooded with birthday greetings. There were a couple of messages and a couple of calls to wish me. And honestly, that seemed more than enough. The point I'm trying to get to here is.. It doesn't really matter if someone wishes you or not. There are people who will always remember to wish you, mostly family and a couple of close friends. There are people who will rely on social media to send you their wishes, even though they really don't care. There are people who will not wish you even though they remember, because that's their way of showing you how they don't care. There are all kinds of people around. But you know what? There's no one just like ‘You’!Your birthday is ‘YOUR’ birthday! And it should be a big deal for ‘YOU’! Irrespective of who wishes and doesn't; who remembers and doesn't; who makes an effort or doesn't!Your birthday is a celebration of ‘You’. Of the person you are. Of the person you have become. Through your unique experiences and understandings of everything around and within you. And there is no one who knows this, appreciates this, accepts this and celebrates this.. Better than.. You, yourself! So look within, find happiness in yourself, and the will to get happier, in spite of anything and everything!Have a Happy Birthday!Love,Niharika A.

How do I tell people today is my birthday?

Have you ever heard the saying When in Rome, do as the Romans do ? OK, well pretend you're in Rome and I'm a Roman. LOL.I love when it's my birthday or anyone else's birthday for that matter. So, I just simply say, to whom I want to know, “HAY, IT'S MY BIRTHDAY !” while I'm fist pumping in the air or giving them a high five. No, I'm not shy about it, nor is it embarrassing for me to do. I mean, it's my birthday so, I'm allowed. My day, my 1 day out of the whole year that I get to claim all my own, and I will let it be known. Trust me.So, say it, sing it, yell it ! It's your day, let the whole world know that you are alive !Happy Birthday by the way, and I hope this answer helps.

How can I stream my birthday party?

1. CameraYou need a camera to cover the event.  You will probably also want to capture sound?  Depending on the quality you want and the budget, you can vary from using an integrated webcam (very basic) to a multi-camera setup with a professional crew (very advanced).  2. EncodingYou need to hook it up to some device that encodes your content to a digital format.  Typically this can be a computer with the appropriate software.  If you are using a free platform like ustream.com, you will get their own software that can do this for you.  Otherwise, if you're doing it on a self-built platform there are free encoders like Adobe Live Media Encoder - but that needs some knowledge of video streaming and the technicalities involved.  3. Platform You need to broadcast it via an online platform that can handle live video streaming and the traffic you expect to get.   Ustream.com, Justin.tv, livestream.com, YouTube Live, etc. are many platforms that offer these services.  The advanced option is to setup your own streaming server and load balancing network with software such as Wowza setup on an Amazon EC2 cluster. In addition to the DIY options above, there are many professional companies that can do this for you for a fee and relieve you of all the technical know-how and preparation around this.

Do you ever feel like you don't want to celebrate your birthday sometimes? I’m turning 16 in a week.

I did for several years, but it was due to a traumatic event.I was 21 when I received the phone call that my dad had rushed my mom to the hospital. She was not awake, either. From our local hospital she was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter. For one week my mom was in intensive care. We were only allowed to see her at certain times. It was so hard, and so unexpected. After a week in ICU, we agreed to take my mother off life support. The doctors had said she would never recover to be her usual self. After my mom was taken of life support, she continued to live. it was the second day when it became my birthday. My dad wanted to take the family out to a birthday dinner for me. We hadn’t eaten dinner so we all went to eat. During the meal my sister asked what time it was. 9:15pm. It was time to go back to the hospital for the last visit of the day.Upon entering the ICU waiting room a nurse came up and was very upset. She wanted to know where we had been. That evening as we were celebrating my birthday my mom died. Around nine pm or so.Had it not been for my birthday we would have been there to be by her side when she passed away. There was a lot of guilt. A lot of pain. It’s never easy to say goodbye to a loved one. It’s just as hard to take them off of life support. It’s like you’ve given up on them! It’s surely not easy to celebrate your birthday after that.I don’t think it’s unusual to not want to celebrate your birthday. At 16 life is hard. Do whatever you’d like for your birthday. Cozy up with a good book. Go eat pizza with your best friend, or even by yourself. It’s your birthday, so do what you want, not what you think you should do.Whatever you do, I hope it’s a nice time for you. And, 32 years after my mother’s death, I do celebrate my birthday. It’s just very low-key.

How do I turn off the notification of my birthday to others on Facebook?

You cannot turn off. Only when you put privacy from public/friends to only me there will be no notification. When you put only me no one will know your birthday. You can do this prior to some days and after your birthday date so that there will be no notification. Which some people do just so that they can hide. Some even deactivated their account prior to and after some days from their birthday date so that no one will wish them or ask for birthday treat.

How do I turn off the notification of my birthday to others on LinkedIn?

As a former banker, I would suggest you remove your date of birth from your LinkedIn Profile - visit your own profile and on the right hand side, click ‘Contact and Personal Info’ and scroll to the bottom and remove it and also choose ‘Only visible to you.’Sue Ellson - Independent LinkedIn Specialist
