Do you burn more calories when you are sick?

In my case it seems so. I have a very strict eating and workout habit. I only eat carbs and cheat on Saturdays. I also cheat on Holidays, Birthdays and when I am sick.I have been ill since a couple of days which also means I could not do workouts and was lying in bed all day long. I got high fever and am still freezing all the time. During those days I ate some really bad stuff like lots of potato chips and never bothered with salads, fruits or greens as I just dont want to move or spend alot of time filling my stomach. However this night I went to the toilet and risked a short glance and posing in front of the mirror and man did I look jacked. My shoulders were so defined and 3D (ok light is very good too haha). But still, for feeling like a wet towell I looked surprisingly ripped. Two things might have led to this. First I had much more sleep and maybe less stress which led to less cortisol and better fatburn. Second I was still not going overboard with calories and my glycogen depleted muscles soaked all the water in with the carbs making them fuller and looking dry.I read that injuries lead to more burnt calories. I think some diseases do that aswell.

Does pain burn calories?

Pretty basic. Does pain, physical pain burn calories. I've noticed that after a half hour appointment with my dentist, I'm always hungry and tired no matter how much I ate before. And I'd always be more tired if the appointment hurt more.(as in how much he adjusted my teeth since I have braces). So out of curiosity, does pain burn calories? Or does it make you burn more calories to add to the daily amount of calories burnt for those that will tell me that you burn calories no matter what you do?

How many calories do you burn swimming?

Swimming is a great way to burn calories and tone muscles. It's great because it's zero impact and it works the entire body. You'll not only work your legs (from kicking) and arms (from the strokes) but you'll tone your back, chest, abs, glutes, all over!

Try to vary your strokes, and do 2 or 3 different ones each session. Since I'm not good at butterfly, I always do freestyle, breast stroke, and back stroke.

Here's an example of what I do when I want to swim for an exercise. Oh, and when I'm describing my routine, a "lap" is "there and back" and a length is just one way.

I start out with a nice-paced freestyle lap or two to get warmed up. Then I'll do the same with breast stroke. Medium paced, there and back, twice.

Then I go pretty hard freestyle again about 2-3 laps. This gets my heart rate up pretty quickly. When I'm tired, I go to breast stroke.

If I ever get too out of breath, I switch to back stroke. That way I can breathe whenever I want, catch my breath, but I never stop working out.

Once I've caught my breath, I go back to freestyle. And basically repeat all over again until I'm done. Usually about a half hour.

To keep the pace going, I have really worked on my flip turns. That way I never have to stop and hold on to the side of the pool. It's a non-stop workout for 20-30 minutes, and I feel great afterwards.

It's a GREAT all over workout.

Remember to drink water! A lot of people get dehydrated while swimming. All the water makes you think you're not sweating as much and also makes you not as thirsty. So you have to make a conscious effort to drink water before and after your workout.

Also, wear goggles so your eyes don't get all red and yucky. :)

Does your body burn more calories when your muscles hurt from exercising?

No. The muscle pain is from lactic acid buildup. It has nothing to do with burning calories. It does show that you are working your muscles harder than usual and can be used as an indicator of sorts to show that you are progressing in your workouts.

You should try to work out at a level where you feel just at the edge of discomfort. If you feel sharp pain, you need to stop. If you just have mild soreness for a day or two, that's normal, and good.

There are also some recent studies that show that muscle tone has little to do with weight loss and calorie burning. Calorie burning has a direct relationship with the level of aerobic exercise. Better muscle tone does not affect it at all. What better muscle tone does, however, is allow you to work at a faster pace for longer times which will burn more calories.

What exercise is most efficient in burning calories without much pain?

The best answer is something that you really like to do that gets you breathing hard and increases your heart rate. It would be difficult to give a specific answer because what may seem easy and fun for one could be a bad answer for another. Another issue is that if you are sedentary now, but really liked to do some particular activity, returning to it with too much enthusiasm may very well cause injuries and pain from overdoing it. So, try to go into any activity with some sensibility about your present condition and gradually progress in time and intensity. Make it a process and not an ultimate goal. And persevere. Make it something that repetitively uses the large muscles. My suggestions would include things that don’t require a great deal of initial skill for someone who has not done the activity before. For example, swimming might be something that someone has done previously and already has some skill, therefore might be a good choice. For someone without previous training in swimming, it would be a bad choice. Something that does not require much skill and is something that can give you a good workout in a fairly short time is using an elliptical trainer. This could be boring, so you also need to have some positive distraction like doing it with a partner, listening to music that you like and stimulates you or other distracting activity that engages your mind, but doesn’t keep you from your intensity. If you have been really sedentary, there will be some pain. You just about can’t avoid it. You will have soreness in muscles that haven’t been used. Convince yourself that it’s only temporary, because it is. There are lots of choices out there. Get busy.

Does experiencing pain burn more calories than feeling relaxed?

Yes, you would burn more calories when you are in pain.Simply because your body is working a little harder, however it wouldn't be a very significant amount of calories at all. Nonetheless, the answer is yes.

How many calories do you burn riding a motorcycle?

I have to go see my cardiologist Thursday, but the preliminary guess from the ECG is that my heart is working at about 28% efficiency. Walking up two flights of stairs causes pains. I know what exercise is -- it is what causes pain. I *cannot* burn calories at even a moderate rate.

Riding a motorcycle is less effort, and thus burns less calories, than a stroll down a country lane.

Unless you're racing.
