Do You Have To Serve All 6yrs Of Your Contract Obligation To Recieve Montgomery Gi Bill

Army Military Police Enlistment Contract Length?

I am joining the army in hopes of becoming MP, but my recruiter is telling me that the contract length for the MOS is 5 years. I was just wondering if this is true? If it is, im still going to make the commitment because I would like to be a cop once i get out and i feel like this job would be the best training for my career choice, but i was hoping for a shorter contract. I dont want to get there and find out that the army life isnt for me, and end up stuck for such a long time. 5 years may not be that long in the span of a lifetime, but im only 20 years old and that is a large chunk of my youth to be gambling away.

Air Force Montgomery GI bill and CLRP?

I have signed up for 6 yrs active duty in the af. But When I signed up they told me I had to choose either Montgomery GI bill or CLRP because I couldn't have both. Im not sure if this was true or not any information is appreciated

When do I begin receiving Montgomery GI Bill benefits?

1. You have to complete AIT first.

2. You get the reserve select GI Bill, not the MGIB

3. Reserve benefits are:

Tuition assistance up to $4,500 per year ( goes straight to the school )
Reserve select Gi Bill - $305 per month for full time student
Gi Bill kicker - An additional $350 per month for a full time student

The Reserve GI Bill and kicker are paid directly to you

Your reserve unit should have a education NCO, you need to find out who they are , now, before you go to AIT , that way when you come back and start college, you will already know what paperwork you are going to need to srtart getting the TA and GI Bill.

It is not automatic

NOTES:

After AIT , you should receive a DD Form 2384-1, Notice of Basic Eligibility , that gets entered into the DOD computer system and shows the VA you are eligible for benefits.

Then you must fill out a VA Form 22-1990, Application for Education Benefits. Send it to the VA regional office with jurisdiction over the State where you will train.

If I get discharged from the army reserves will I lose the gi bill benefits I earned while on active duty?

To add to what Bo said, it doesn't matter if you had an Honorable Discharge and earned seventeen Medals of Honor... for benefits, it is your LAST discharge that matters. If (actually: WHEN) you receive your OTH (if you don't start going to drills), you will LOSE everything - Montgomery GI Bill, VA Home loan deals, EVERYTHING.

Don't do it.

If I choose the CLRP my first enlistment can I get the GI Bill my 2nd?

you must decide if you want to enroll in the GI Bill while you are at basic training. i do not know why anyone would decline. that's free money.

sounds like you received a recruiting incentive to enlist into a hard-to-fill AFSC. what are you going into if i may ask?

i as because i haven't heard of a student loan repaymentprogram incentive for the active duty air force in some time. those kind of perks have been off the table even in the guard and reserves for a while now.

if you can only choose between one or the other, take the post 9-11 GI bill instead - it will give you a greater benefit over the long haul than CLRP.

one note on the CLRP: the IRS considers that a TAXABLE benefit (whereas the GI Bill is not). that means you will get a form from the air force come tax time and the IRS will chargeyou taxes on whatever the air force pays. so if they write a check for the entire 20k, you pay taxes on 20k as if it were income. yes, that does blow... but, would you rather pay the 20k yourself, or the taxes on 20k? pay the 20k yourself and you can get a deduction on your taxes on the interest accumulated n the loans.

If you join the military as an enlisted person can you become an officer before your term expires?

No, but not in the way you imagine.By default, in order to accept a commission, you can no longer be enlisted. You will have to be discharged before doing so. I had seven and a half hours of being a civilian between my enlisted time and my commissioning at Officer Candidate School on December 20, 1984, even though it was a little over two years after I sworn in as an enlisted soldier for a four-year enlistment contract. That’s because my enlistment status was terminated and I was officially discharged at midnight the day prior to my taking the oath of office as an officer. I even have a Good Humor award (Good Conduct Medal) and DD-form-214 to prove it, dated 19 December, 1984.What did I do with that time? I slept most of it, waking up a glorious half hour later than our normal 0530 AM wake up for PT (which I also didn’t miss in the slightest), showered, shaved and dressed in my Class A’s to have my father, a retired Army LTC, administer me my oath just after 0730 hours that morning as a Second Lieutenant.
