Why do some people dislike Portland, Oregon?

A lot of people dislike the direction Portland is going (crime, wasteful public spending, PC thought control, huge discrepancy between housing costs and likelihood of getting a decent job), but can’t quite put their finger on the reason why these things are happening. As others have said, Portland has become a mecca, a place a lot of people are flocking to, bringing their expectations of finding a liberal paradise where everyone’s cool like them.I say this not as a kneejerk response, but as a 30+ year resident who’s been told as much by many, many people I meet when I talk to them about why they came here and why they’re disappointed. But as someone who’s been here long term (and lived my whole life in the state where Portland calls the shots), I think that people need to recognize that the question holds the answer within itself; a snake swallowing its own tail.Portland has become quite unpleasant as a social environment (though it is a lovely place aesthetically) precisely because of people’s belief that if everyone is cool like them, that will create a mecca. That belief is wrong. Any time people engage in group think and conformity-policing, things start to suck. It doesn’t matter the political, religious or ideological affiliation. Portland is a one-party machine, where anyone who displays the right letter beside their name can get into a position of complete and unchecked power and dole out political favors to their perhaps not-quite-worthy friends, and the population won’t take advantage of its political right (duty?) to check that process because to question the one-party machine is to admit that one’s highly prized beliefs have flaws.Of course, this can happen anywhere, and to anyone. We all have our delusions. But when a place becomes associated in popular culture with the most faddish delusions, and people flock to it with the most strongly held expectation that THIS will finally be THE PLACE where those faddish delusions will face the least challenge; and then they arrive and discover that life in such a theme park is less than paradise; you have Cognitive Dissonance hanging so thickly in the air that you could cut it with a knife.Portland still has its charms, its quiet normalcy behind the bright shiny things. But the charm and normalcy are slowly pricing out, moving away, and being demolished. It’s not a fun time to be in Portland.

How can I start a clothing business?

Big brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Versace are expanding to developing economies, which has not only improved their geographical reach but also won them a newer consumer base. The research report states that the opportunity in the global luxury apparels market will be worth US$60,793.7 mn by the end of 2024 from US$1,8842.69 mn in 2015.Get PDF Brochure For More InnovationBetween the years of 2016 and 2024, the global market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 13.2%. The increasing affordability of luxury apparels is attributable to the mass production of goods, which has transformed the 19th-century ways of dress making. The leather is the next emerging segment in the global market. This material is being preferred due to its durability and ability adapt to myriad designs that characterize high fashion. The expensive nature of leather also makes it fit for luxury brands, who work on the premise of premium pricing of the exceptionally high quality of products. While the worldwide luxury apparels market could be segmented on the basis of the material used, and by gender, the cotton luxury apparels is foretold to dominate the market revenue. The changing environmental conditions, with longer and hotter summers, makes cotton the most preferred choice of fabric to be used in clothing.Being soft, comfortable, and breathable, the material is largely turning into the favored option of high street fashion. Leather is predicted to be the next emerging segment among materials, on account of its durability and its premium tag.

R&P: What Music Stores are in your area? ?

We have corporate places like best buy & such, but we have have better ones than that. There's stores not as corporate, but still a local midwestern chain called Homer's. There's somewhat corporate used places like cd warehouse & for used there's a really independent used place that doesn't just sell records but used books as well called "the Antiquarium", in fact at the "Antiquarium", me & a group of people got put on a government watch list for political activist meetings we had there. Our activist group even got on the national news for raising hell, when a certain president came to town. Back to the question there's also an independent used store across the river in Council Bluffs called "Kane's Collectibles". Also there's record collectors shows that come out her twice a year, which I try to score a lot of good stuff at those too. ---
However the best place for a record store in Omaha is a store called "Drastic Plastic". It started off as a tiny shop in south Omaha & then moved to the now trendy area downtown called the Old Market. When it moved to the Old Market, it started out on 13nth street in the Old Market, but moved around the corner to the main street which is called Howard Street. It used to sell tons of skateboards too, but the market for that gradually changed when the stinkin' city council voted to not allow skateboarders to skate in the Old Market anymore. Anyway besides selling music, it sold skateboards for a while but after the skateboard market changed, it started selling lots of T-shirts of bands also, which eventually music sales & t-shirt & other sales, made them so much money they had enough money made to buy a spot on the main street, then they also made their store bigger after that too. It's not as big in size as "Electric Fetus" 'es store in Minneapolis or "Reckless" records store in Chicago, but it's not bad sized for an independently owned music store. It has a better & bigger selection of Punk, Industrial, Gothic, Political Rap, Surf, non commercial Metal, Psychobilly, Shoegaze, Mod, Reggae, some Blues & Jazz greats, & other great music genres. It also sells music magazines, & as I mentioned T-Shirts which includes band T-shirts, Strange movie T-shirts, besides also having fliers from upcoming concerts locally & places up to 3 hours away such as Kansas City, Lawrence Kansas, Des Moines & Sioux City Iowa & Lincoln, Nebraska. The Punk band Black Flag has their phone number for "Drastic Plastic" on one of their albums.

Teens:Do you miss the old/original hot topic?

I'm not a teen (I'm 25), but how would teens miss it if they never experienced it? And it was never real goth, at least not once it was a big enough store to be nationwide. It had a mallgoth thing going on (like Tripp pants, since those are NOT real goth fashion at all), at least at the time I had my first experience with the store in the early '00s. I will say it was better then than it is now. I did find the occasional real goth item there, such as a Bauhaus t-shirt in like 2002 or '03 or so. And although not goth, they had like industrial/EBM/futurepop CDs (like Metropolis Records compilations and bands like Funker Vogt and VNV Nation - at least I was able to buy music there I liked back in the early to mid '00s, which is something I wouldn't be able to do today). I haven't even been in a Hot Topic for several years (and even then that was because a friend dragged me in), but the clothes were like neon and tacky-looking and the music they sold was like screamo and stuff (this had to have been like '09 or '10, so I'm sure what they sell has even changed since then). Not that the store was that great in say, 2002 when I was a teen and would go there, but it's definitely not what it once was.

Why do some people dislike Portland, Oregon?

I lived in Portland for a year, from 2008 to 2009. I love visiting Portland, and spending a few days there. I’ve been back for short visits a couple of times, since moving away, and enjoyed my trips. That said, I really did not enjoy living in Portland. There are many things that I did enjoy and cherish about Portland. I loved the good public transportation system. I loved the food culture in Portland. I loved the greenness. I loved the amazing beers and pubs and everything that McMenamin’s touches. That said, the main thing I didn’t enjoy about Portland was the desperate lack of diversity. Portland has a reputation as the whitest big city in America. It also has, despite the image as a liberal oasis in the Northwest, a troubling history of white supremacy. You can read more about that on the Atlantic. While I loved the food culture, the food carts, and many of the offerings, I came to learn that Portland does great at certain types of foods. Mainly, comfort foods. If I want a chicken biscuit doused in gravy, I struggle to think of a town where I’ve had a better one.But as far as foods of other cultures, I found it really lacking. Often, if something is offered, it will be owned, operated and cooked by people who are not members of that culture. My personal mission in the time that I lived there was to find great Mexican food. I ate a lot of it while I lived there, and I was disappointed A LOT. I ultimately found three places that I found tolerable, and I stuck to those. The other issue I had with Portland was naiveté. The ultra-liberalness combined with the lack of diversity creates people who really don’t know how to act when they meet people of color. I’ve heard way too many stories, and I can assure you, that people of color won’t appreciate it when you ask them if you can touch their hair. Finally, the nativism is extreme. The sheer hatred for anyone who moves to Portland from somewhere else, particularly those who come from California. This story is extreme, but reflective of the sentiment of too many Portlanders. It sounds exactly like Trump supporters, on a smaller scale. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until Portlanders build a wall to keep Californians out.I still love visiting Portland, but I’d never live there again.

How do you recognize value in real estate?

Clearly there are books dedicated to this subject as well as professional designations earned by those who make their living giving opinions about real estate value.I will do my best to provide you with a short, useful answer.Real estate is worth what someone else will pay for it. By looking at comparable properties that have changed hands recently, one can get a helpful indication of how prospective purchasers would value your property. Not all properties are being used to their best potential. A farmer’s field might have limited potential for earning agricultural income and for that reason may appear to have limited value. If, however, the land could be repurposed as a residential subdivision, its value could be considerably higher for a buyer who is capable of transitioning the land’s use to a more profitable purpose. Always consider the land’s “highest and best use” when considering its value.Location is generally considered to be the most important factor when considering the value of real estate. Properties located in desirable areas are always worth more than a similarly constructed property in a less desirable location. Access to transportation, amenities and services will reflect well in a property’s value. In areas devoted to retail shopping, it is sometimes the case that the sunny side of the street is more valuable (and more expensive to rent) than the side of the street that is mostly shady; pedestrians and shoppers will gravitate to the sunnier side of the street creating more traffic and profit for the retailers there.Commercial properties that are at their “highest and best use” are often valued as a function of the income that they earn for the owner. If you read a little about “Cap Rates” you will get a more fulsome idea of how these calculations are done. Personal use properties do not generate income and are valued in comparison to other similar properties, having similar amenities and a similar location.

Will China collapse in 2019?

As a Chinese I want to say something here (please ignore any grammatical mistakes I may have made, Chinese is my mother language ^^)The title of this question has raised my thoughts on blood and tears wiped by my poor compatriots during the development of China. I will put it like this: “Will it do the world any good if China really collapses?”I’m working at an export company in China. We export shoes all around the world. The profit is low and the incomes of the workers in the factory are even lower. As some of you may already know: “this shit is from China! OMG. China makes all this shitty stuff and sells it to us.” Ok. Frankly speaking we do sell pretty well. Imagine one day we don’t make the cheap stuff and what will happen. I’m pretty sure the price of all your daily necessities will increase to a level you could never image at this moment. Why? Because China provides the largest amount of cheap products in the world. Are we willing to be the biggest provider of cheap products in the world? Definitely not. The fact is, the percentage of people who are not well educated in China is still very big, both young and old, mainly people from the less developed areas. What can they do for a living? We provide jobs for them to work in the factories. The income is not much but enough for them to raise a family, to feed their kids and to afford to send them to school. If China really collapsed, they will lose their way of living, they will become homeless and in the worst scenario become a criminal, and Chinese society will become a mess. You ask how this will influence my life here in my country? Please look at what happened in some countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The refugees from those countries have already influenced European societies, and they will certainly do anything to survive. Remember the populations of these countries are not even close to the population of one single province in China. So, if China collapsed, the first thing that will happen to you will be the price increase of your T-shirts and slippers. Then you may read in the news one day that some Chinese refugees broke into some random houses for food…by then China will literally become the biggest supplier of “shitty stuff.”Alright, I just finished a business trip in Shanghai and I feel a little bit tired. But I hope I have made myself clear and please forgive my poor expression of my thoughts. Never good at it.Cheers!Frank in Hefei
