Do You Know Anyone Who Has Turned A Hobby Into A Successful Business

Want to start my own business... Honest opinions. Is this a stupid idea?

I want to start a business out of my home selling infused waters with fruit and herbs in them. They have tons of health benefits and I have created a lot of different recipes. I am planning on selling them through the internet and family and friends. Do you think this would be successful? Honest opinions please. I don't want to spend money and time if no one would be interested in such a thing.

What hobby have you ended up turning into a job?

Yes. In the 70’s i was fascinated by these new fangled ‘computers’ so bought an early model to teach myself and learn on while becoming an engineer doing a 4 year apprenticeship. although i loved engineering, it had its limitations because of the unions who stifled personal achievement, so gradually drifted more towards computing. after about 3 years self teaching, i enrolled on a computer course, then applied for jobs, eventually starting my own business after 10 years as a wage slave, and 40 years since i first bought my first PC here i still am, having had a better career and earned more money than i ever dreamed of as a youth

How does one develop a hobby into a business?

I don’t know if this applies for all hobbies, but following is how a friend of mine turned a hobby into a business. His hobby was magic. He was good at it. He spent a lot of time working at it. He joined several magic clubs and participated in contests. He did magic shows for small groups. He got to know other "professional” magicians. He got more, and better paid bookings. After a good number of years he wrote his first magic book. This got him more bookings, etc. Over the years he has written a number of books, and gained widespread fame in the magic community.Hope that helps. Best of luck to you in your endeavor.

If I turned a hobby into a business, would I regret it?

Having turned my hobby into a business I would say no if you do it right, but at some point during the process, you might rethink if it is worth it. When things in life get hard and you are about to quit, you know you are close to an exponential breakthrough. If you love making furniture there are many ways you could turn your hobby into a business, but execution is key…Here are a few possible ways that come to mind:You create a product for the mass market — If you want to be hands on with furniture making, this probably won’t make you happy unless you enjoy drawing more then making. This is extremely hard and will test you to the ultimate limit. If you enjoy furniture making, I would not suggest this route. You could target a particular niche you are interested in, for example restaurants and build custom furniture for them. If you don’t target a franchise you will always have to find new businesses, which means less time actually performing your hobby. If you do nail a franchise contract you will have plenty of work that might keep you busy for years. You could open a furniture store and create furniture you want, as well as custom furniture for clients. This requires you to consistently advertise to generate new customers, which might take time away from performing your hobby. If this is a brick and mortar store, you’ll need someone available during business hours, and if this is you — you won’t have much time to create furniture… Although I think it would be pretty cool to walk into a furniture store and see the wood maker on the floor doing what he does best. From my perspective, you can turn any business into a hobby, but the execution and the way you structure your business is extremely important.Hope this helps!
