Do You Know What Animal This Is Is It A Rabbit

Do you know what this animal is?

When I was in Mexico (Rivera Maya), I noticed this small mammal out in grassy areas/at the edges of forests. They were EVERYWHERE!
It was about the size of a cat, had brown fur, a face like a guinea pig...but hind legs that looked like a rabbit's?

I asked some Mexican people, and they told me that in Spanish it's name is pronounced "soo-ket-eh". Does anybody know what this animal is/what its name is in English?

Do you know what this animal is?

Its a mara. maras are part of the cavy family. These large relatives of guinea pigs are common in the Patagonian steppes of Argentina but live in other areas of South America as well such as Paraguay. Maras are the fourth largest rodent in the world, after capybaras, Porcupines, and beavers, reaching about 45 cm (18 in) in height.
There are two species of maras recognised, the Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum), and the Chacoan Mara (Dolichotis salinicola). They are known as the pampas hare.
Patagonian Maras are often kept in zoos or as pets and is also known as "Patagonian cavy" or "Patagonian hare". They can be quite social with humans if raised with human interaction from a young age, though in the wild they avoid humans. Maras may even change their habits from coming out in day to becoming nocturnal, simply to avoid social interaction.
Maras mate for life, and may have from 1 to 3 offspring each year. Mara babies are very well developed, and can start grazing within 24 hours.

How do you know if your rabbit is sick?

That's normal. There are many signs to notice when a rabbit is sick such as a dirty rear end from diahrrea.

But normally with most any animal there are a couple tell-tale signs that an animal is sick. If the animal hunches in one spot and doesn't seem to want to move from that spot. That is a good sign. Hunching in spot and not wanting to move is different than the animal acting relaxed and lazy and just laying in the same spot.

Another thing to watch are the ears. If an animal is not feeling good they will often not carry their ears as erect as they normally do, especially when they are up and moving around.

I'd say your rabbit sounds perfectly fine and you have nothing to worry from your description.

Also, watch how much your rabbit eats. If you see that the rabbit is not eating or is eating less that could be a sign that your rabbit is sick. Keep in mind that rabbits will typically eat less during the summer when it is hot. Also you can run your hand over the rabbit's back. If the rabbit starts feeling bony over the back, that's a very good sign that the rabbit is or has been sick.

How to know if your rabbit is show quality?

Rabbits do not need to be registered or even pedigreed to be shown and be show quality. However, since you do not show and your breeding rabbits have not been shown, there is no way you can ethically sell any of your kits as show rabbits. The only way to know if you have show rabbits is to actively show and learn from judges and other breeders what is and what is not show quality. What I am going to say next is based on the US Standard of Perfection but it will be similar elsewhere. With Flemish over half the total points are on type, with body type making up 1/3 of the total points. You need to learn to recognize the characteristic semi-arched (mandolin) body type. You need to be able to recognize common type faults like flat, pinched, chopped or undercut hindquarters, weak or flat shoulders, lack of a good arch and the list goes on! Your rabbits must make adult weight. Bucks over 8 months old must weigh at minimum 13 lbs and does 14 lbs. Most good show flemish are heavier than that. I once judged a 22 lb senior doe! You also need to be able to recognize proper sandy color and faults like blue under-color on the belly, smudgy color or heavy lacing. I don't think you would be out of line asking $20 for pets, pet stores ask a lot more for mutts, but you may have trouble getting it. If you want to go after the show market, you really need to show. That is where you will sell your show stock - not out of the house. At US shows, every rabbit that crosses the table gets comments from the judge, even disqualified rabbits or rabbits that place very low in big classes where the judge is not required to give an actual placing. By watching the judging and asking questions after the judge has finished the breed, you can learn a lot, even if you don't have a rabbit is the class. Often breeders will let you look over, and more important, feel their winning rabbits. Coat and condition are judged more by feel than by look though a rabbit in really prime condition of body and coat has a look that you can see from 10 feet away! Also, most shows these days are double or triple shows so you can watch 2 or 3 judges place the same rabbits which can be a real education!

What I need to know about getting a Rabbit?

Hi there

First of all, I think a rabbit is one of the best pets you can get, but then again I would say that. The most important thing is that you are able to give it time and attention. In my experience, the more time you spend with the rabbit, the more receptive it becomes, and the better the bond you share.

Most people think of rabbits as animals that can be left without attention for long periods, this is really not the case. As social animals, it is important to spend time with you bunny and handle it from a young age. If you do this, you will get so much out of him/her.

To look after your rabbit, you would need a good size cage, so he/she can stand up on their hind legs with out touching the top. Also, a heavy food bowl is a good idea as it won't be a easy to knock down. Then it's a case of providing toys, hay and lots of time and affection.

I think it's a great idea providing you have to time, and it's cool your planning to keep the bunny inside, as unfortunately we lost our bunny to a fox, despite the hutch being very sturdy and having "fox proof" wire.

You will also need to spay or neuter your bunny for behavioral reasons. If you decide to get a female, failing to spay will lead to her getting ovarian cancer in the majority of cases

Overall, I think you just need to make yourself aware of bunny facts, like diet behavior and things like that. I learnt all these things from the net, speaking to the vet and just hands on experience.

Good luck!

HOW DO I TELL IF MY RABBIT IS WILD OR NOT?

What color is it? Most wild rabbits are shades of browish and are not solid colored but have tiny specks in the fur. Many eastern cottontails have a white streak down their nose. Domestic (non-wild) rabbits need commercial rabbit pellets as the primary food. Wild rabbits do not make good pets because they will eventually become "wild", scratching, biting and not wanting to be handled. Some domestic rabbits are also brown but they look different than the wild ones. Unless it's a dwarf species, domestic rabbits get much larger than wild rabbits. If you have a domestic rabbit and you can't get commercial rabbit pellets then you need to find another home for the rabbit. They can't live on a solid diet of people food. Try mail ordering alfalfa pellets.
