Do You Like Having A Masters Degree In Psychology

What can I do with a masters degree in psychology?

With a master's degree in Psychology or probably better yet, Community or Applied Psychology, you could eventually take your board exams and become a licensed counselor. You could even specialize in marriage and family therapy, chemical dependency counseling, rehabilitative counseling, school and vocational counseling, or just the general area. Usually, these programs will not be listed on the graduate bulletin under the psychology heading; they usually fall under Human Services, Community Counseling, or Applied Psychology headings, but all are masters degree programs and have a nice starting/entry level salary. If you would like to become a clinical psychologist or researcher, that will require a Ph.D or Psy. D, there is just no getting around that with those types of careers. If you want to do therapy and counsel clients, than the other routes I mentioned previously will get you there and will allow you to finish at a faster rate.

What can I do with a master's degree in psychology?

It depends on what area of psychology.  Depending on your US state, if you have a Master's in clinical or counseling (or similar areas of) psychology, you may be able to get licensed as a psychotherapist.  (In most jurisdictions, you would need a doctorate -- a PhD or a PsyD -- in order to be a psychologist.)  You could also work as a researcher (usually as a research assistant, not an independent researcher), work in general positions that are open to your skill sets (e.g., HR, consulting), teach  community college-level courses, etc.Just a correction on one of the answers -- you cannot become a social worker without a social work degree (e.g., usually a MSW).

What is it like having a master's degree in education psychology from Harvard?

From the Harvard Law website: For law students interested in pursuing expertise in another field, the Law School offers the following joint degree programs: JD/MBA with Harvard Business School; JD/MPP or MPA-ID with Harvard Kennedy School; JD/MPH with Harvard School of Public Health; JD/MUP with the Graduate School of Design;JD/PhD with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; and JD/LLM with Cambridge University in the U.K. So you can't get a joint degree, but you might be able to study both. It would take 3 years for the JD and 2 years for the Education Psychology. A joint degree just means that you save two semesters, because some of your courses in your concentration count towards your law degree and visa versa. So, I'm not sure if there is such a program in Educational Psychology at any university, since the courses are quite different than law. In my own search for JD joint degrees, I did happen to see a lot of joint JD/MA Forensic Psychology, so that would definitely be an option for you, just not at Harvard.

What can I do with a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology (job outlook, salary, etc.)?

No master's in Clinical Psychology - PhD! You cannot get licensed as clinical psychologist with less than PhD )or PsyD). There are master's programs in counseling, e.g. marriage & family counseling. But they are all glut on the market, lots of positions are only part-time, and most grads end up having to cobble together two or more P-T jobs. Your degree in CJ is not relevant, so even if you could get accepted somewhere with a strong minor in psych, you likely won't be able to keep up with classmates who are far better prepared.

You really need to look at alternatives if you want to keep yourself in the Job Box despite US entering the Post-Jobs Era.

Masters or PHD (in psychology)?

Ok, I'm embarrassed to be asking this, but I'm preparing to apply for grad school for psychology, and I'm still not clear about the difference between a masters and a PHD.

I know you have to have a masters to get a PHD, and I know that with a PHD you can do much more career-wise.

But do you have to get your masters FIRST, and then get your PHD? Like, do I have to apply to one grad school for my masters, and then apply again to the same school or another school to get my PHD? Or can you go straight to grad school for a PHD?

I hope this makes sense.

As much (detailed) advice as possible would be greatly appreciated!

What can you do with a bachelors degree in Psychology?

With a bachelor's, you can do little things like school counselor and whatnot, so it's more worthwhile just to go two more years, get your master's, and become a counselor or something, making $50-$150 an hour.

Is a graduate degree in psychology worth it? Why?

Of course it is. It totally depends on how you take it to the next level. Once you get your graduate degree, start counseling people for free in the beginning. You can start thing in the last year of your graduation itself. Make your own case studies. Publish them on your blog (create a blog). Make sure to change the names. People don't like their personal problems getting displayed publicly. Make a short form that people can fill in to get counseling from you and VOILA! you are a full time counselor. This will take time but you can do it. With this degree you can also get jobs like, you can be a counselor in a school or a university, or you can practice under a psychiatrist. There are many options. Honestly, you just need a will and a determination to achieve what you want.
