Do You Like My Name Or Not

What do you like most about your name?

My name is actually one that I chose for myself. I love the first and the last and don’t plan to be changing it any time soon. I love the way it sounds, how it can be strong and magnificent and then soft and delicate. For me, it embodies all that I am, a fitting reason for me to choose it. It also sounds like a superheroes alter ego, something that was brought to my attention after I made it.Bruce Wayne. Tony Stark. Hazel Blackthorne. Peter Parker.I fit right in. I gave the list to someone who doesn’t know diddlysquat about superheroes and told them to choose the name that wasn’t a superhero. It took them a while of perusing, as there were a lot more names on that list then mine. Do you know what one they chose? Not mine.Peter Parker. To be frank, I was gobsmacked. About the fact that it worked and that they didn’t know who Peter Parker was. I didn’t think it would work, but it did. When I told them it was actually Hazel Blackthorne, they looked at my like I was completely mad, before laughing it off and asking to know more about these superheroes. She is now one of the biggest Marvel fans I know.Another thing I like about this name is that it suits me. I am a very hotheaded and impulsive person some of the time. Blackthorne sounds deadly and cold, like I can be when I am sarcastic. Which, to be fair, is most of the time. People are constantly telling me that I need to be less sarcastic, to which I reply, “Keep telling yourself that, maybe one day you’ll believe it.” It’s very fun.In the end, I love this name because I chose it for myself. It sounds fun, mysterious and packs a punch. People ask me where it came from. I just do the evil person chuckle and tell them that one day I met a person whos name I liked, so I killed them and took it. No, I don’t do that. I tell them that I came up with it, and they move on to their own business. Also, I am a Slytherin. I think it fits in perfectly with my house, don’t you?…Thanks for reading.Hazel

Do you like your name? If not, what name would you prefer and what interesting story would you have about how your name was given to you?

The name I use here is my chosen name.I simply had to have something with “FAB” in it.More aspirational than indicative.Zawa Rinpoche - (a Tibetan Monk now living in Canada) gave me the Tibetan name Lobsang Gyatso - “Beautiful mind like an Ocean” or “Ocean of Pure Thoughts” - EVIDENTLY more aspirational rather than indicative.Sri Lankan monk Bhikkhu Kasyapa gave me the Pali name “Visuddhi” meaning “Pure” when I took Upasaka Upāsaka and Upāsikā - Wikipedia vows with him - AGAIN more aspirational than indicative.Indicative names would have been more like: “Manipulative Parasite” or “Spoilt Brat.”The name I was given at birth was typical at the time of my birth, yet revealed a lack of imagination on the part of my parents.During the 70’s many British born Poles were given the names Robert (my brother’s name) or Marek (my given name). If anyone yelled these 2 names at Polish School during the 80’s - maybe over 70% of the boys would raise their heads. Half a dozen Polish families living within spitting distance from my Mama’s house - each of them have a son named either Robert or Marek. There are many more interesting Polish names, yet UK resident Poles didn’t want their kids to be picked on for their names so often chose names that were the same or similar in both languages (Robert- same, Ryszard for Richard, Edward - same, Andrzej for André, Józef for Joseph, Piotr - Peter, Mariusz- Marius, Dariusz- Darius, Aleksander - Alexander)Girls’ names were easier - Anna, Maria, Barbara (shortened to Basia, pronounced Bash-a), Renata (shortened to Renia), Krystyna, Wanda (Vanda in Polish pronunciation) Daniela, Iwona (pronounced Ee-von-a) Anita, Monika, Joanna (Poles pronounce it Yo-anna).Male names I love: Balthazar, Benedict, Dominic, Matthias, Silas, Cesare, Cyrus, Cyprian, Silas, Maximillian, Solomon, Fabrizio (OBVIOUSLY) Erasmus, Thaddeus, Menno, Oliver, Vladimir, Nikolai, Salvatore, Silvester, Sylvian, Julius, Zenon, Quentin, Tarquin, Rameses, Benjamin, Joshua.Girls’ names? That would be a long list.

What can I do if I don't like my name?

I had the same issue - a very odd spelling and androgynous first name, and an impossible to spell and pronounce ethnic last name (which had been shortened by my grandpa from a more impossible last name, and wasn't exactly a flattering translation from old German). Added to that, I wasn't close with my father at all.I finally legally changed my first, middle and last name when I turned 30. I wished that I had done it at 20, when I first had the idea. It was surprisingly easy and relatively cheap to do. Legally, I didn't have to explain much to the judge, my reasons fit all the checkboxes. Very few people except my close friends even knew that I legally changed my name, since most people thought that Jessie was short for Jessica anyway. The downside was that Jessica was what I'd spent all my life telling people NOT to call me. I went for a time as my middle name "Kay" (K was always my middle initial), because at least my first inclination isn't to correct people that my name is not Jessica!Everything is easier now. My name fits nicely on forms, and when someone I don't know says my last name, it doesn't sound like a fart (used to sound even more like a fart when they were German and DID know how to pronounce it!). It has slightly confused a few people, but they always laugh and understand that "there's always another Jessica in the room".Branding? I just put a "creative" after my name. Or you could put "enterprises" or "solutions" or "creations" or "art" or whatever fits what you do after your domain name.

Do you ever wish to change your name? Why or why not?

Personally, I won't change my name because It was given by my parents and it has beautiful meaning. I realized when I grew up my name represents myself and my personality a lot.It belives that name is wishes of the parents. So, it's so important for parents to give good names to their babies. However, not all people happy with their names, and I know some people who have changed their names due to some reasons, like they think that their names are chessy and not cool for them, or they used to get sick easily and according to the local beliefs, they had to change their names because they thought the name bring illness for them. But I know a guy who has inspired many of his juniors in his high school through his story about changing his name. His real name is “Natim”, and he was my senior in high school. He doesn't have family name and middle name neither, he only has 1 given name “Natim”, and this name is way too old fashioned at all, it doesn't sound cool and sounds like he is completely a villager man and lives in rural area. All of his friends in the city mocked his given name, and always made it as a material of their jokes. Some of his friends even suggested him to change his name. He was embarrassed and yes, he wanted to change his name so badly. He was looking for some edgy new names for himself. He was thinking to change his name to be “Martin” or something like that. And one day he asked his parents why they named him “Natim”.His parents only said to him that when he was born, all of the family wished that he would be a great man and make his family proud in the future. He was in dilemma about changing his name to make it sounds cooler so his friends could stop making joke of him or sticking with his birth name. Finally, after thinking it so many times, he decided to change his name became“Natim Forever”Which means, he is proud to be “Natim” and he will never ever change his (“Natim”) name forever! And actually it works! his name became cooler than before, because he put English word “forever” on his name and it sounds like quirky-western name. Even It makes everybody ask him about his “Forever” name.Since then, all of his friends and juniors call him “Natim Forever”.
