Do you need motorcycle insurance or a motorcycle license to purchase a sports bike ?

In the state of Florida, you do not need any type of insurance to ride your motorcyle on a public road. But, if you finance the motorcycle, In most cases, the finance company will require that you carry full coverage.
If you pay for the bike in cash, then no insurance is needed.
You do not need a motorcycle license in FL to purchase a motorcycle but you DO need to have a motorcycle license or permit to operate a motorcycle on a public highway.
Hope that helps

Do you have to have insurance for a motorcycle in FL?

I am a Florida licensed automobile insurance adjuster. I get this same question dozens of time every week.

The coverage in Florida which pays for your personal medical bills is called No Fault and is also known as Personal Injury Protection or PIP.

Under the Florida No Fault Statute (FS 627.736), a motorcycle does not meet the definition of a motor vehicle and, therefore, cannot be insured for Florida No Fault (aka Personal Injury Protection/PIP benefits). The definition (627.732) from the statute is as follows:

"627.732 Definitions.--As used in ss. 627.730-627.7405, the term:

...

(3) "Motor vehicle" means any self-propelled vehicle with four or more wheels which is of a type both designed and required to be licensed for use on the highways of this state..."

As a motorcycle does not have four or more wheels, it does not meet the definition of a motor vehicle under the Florida No Fault Statute (FS 627.736).

Although a motorcycle does not meet the definition of a motor vehicle for No Fault (aka Personal Injury Protection/PIP) benefits, you are required to carry liability coverage on the bike. Additionally, you can also purchase collision, comprehensive and underinsured motorist benefits.

You can read the applicable Florida statute in it's entirety at the following link:

http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=Ch0627/ch0627.htm

The definition of a motor vehicle as used under the Florida No Fault law is near the bottom of the page.

Not necessarily. Some states (Florida used to be one, no clue if they still are, and Montana are 2 that come to mind) don't require any kind of insurance on motorcycles.

Some Financing companies (Kawasaki Good Times for sure) don't require insurance either.

But for the most part, in most areas under most situations, yes. A basic liability insurance is required.

Edited to add the information that people seem to just not research: From Florida Laws:

"MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE

Florida's mandatory Personal Injury Protection insurance does not apply to motorcycles. Street legal motorcycles with three (3) wheels and motorcycles with attached sidecars are also exempt from this compulsory insurance requirement. The voluntary purchase of motor vehicle liability insurance is recommended for your protection and the protection of other persons. Failure to carry liability insurance can result in the loss of your driver license, tag(s), and registration(s) if you are involved in a traffic accident, convicted of DUI or other occurrences as defined in the Financial Responsibility Law, Chapter 324, Florida Statutes."

Found here:

http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/handbooks/mo...

And on this page from Montana DMV, it tells you what's needed to register a motorcycle:

http://www.dmv.org/mt-montana/motorcycle...

You'll notice the LACK of proof of insurance. There's absolutly no mention of need for insurance on motorcycles anywhere in any of their literature as it's NOT REQURED.

Come on people, you have to know that what's true for your state/location is not necessarily true for Other states/locations.

Financed a motorcycle do i need full coverage or can i buy liabilty?

P.J. sorry man, your going to need full coverage no matter what. Trust me, it sucks and i feel your pain. I got a loan on an 01 ford explorer i owe like 3000.00 more on it, im 21 and have points so my insurance is 287.00 a month for a POS car. No matter what your finance company is going to require you to have full coverage. I mean you can take full coverage off of your insurance with out them knowing but they check often. If they find out that you don't have it, they will send you a letter saying they are putting THEIR insurance on there which like P.J. said is like double of what you are currently getting it for. It's just another way for them to make MORE money out of you getting alone. But in a way, if you did get in an accident wouldn't it suck to pay payments on something you don't have. lol then again i could pay my loan off in like 7 months if i just took my insurance payments and thru it on my loan. lol... Sorry for the bad news man....Just stick with it for now... or go the other route and take off full coverage and pray they don't check on it...If they do its as easy is calling your insurance company and saying "hey put full coverage back on"

Where can I find cheap motorcycle insurance in florida?

WOAH! Sounds to me like you're looking to insure a "crotch rocket"!!

Back up, re-group and reconsider buying a cruiser. Your age and riding experience (ON THE ROAD) count a lot also.

A good rule of thumb is to remember this: the closer you have to get to the horizontal position to ride the bike, the HIGHER your premiums will be! So, the closer you come to an upright riding position, the LOWER your premiums will be.

Yamaha had a program that if you finance LESS than $10,000 - they were NOT requiring physical damage insurance. YOU are STILL responsible for the damage (AND the loan value) if something happens to the bike. You are actually "self insuring" which is the CHEAPEST way to go, but, not always the most economical!

Look around for an independent agent in your area that specializes in bike insurance. In FL, look for the Specialty Insurance Agents logo and you should be able to find someone to help! There are several companies that specialize in or have competitive M/C insurance rates - Progressive, Dairyland, AIG, Foremost, American Modern Home, GMAC (in some States) just to name a few. The is also an internet provider that is something like BIKELINE (sp?)

Good luck, ride RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps!

The big deal in Florida is that motorcyclists who are at least 21 years old and have a minimum of $10,000 in medical insurance don't have to wear helmets while riding.Florida uses a something called the Financial Responsibility law for private passenger vehicles. The minimum liability requirements in the Florida Financial Responsibility Law are:$10,000 for 1 person in bodily injury liability$20,000 for 2 or more people in bodily injury liability$10,000 per crash in property damage liabilityIf you can prove financial responsibility, (ability to cover those amounts yourself), you can get a Financial Responsibility Certificate from the Bureau of Financial Responsibility by doing one of these things:1. Post a surety bond with a state-licensed company.2. Deposit cash or securities with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).3. Get a Self Insurance Certificate from the Bureau of Financial Responsibility after you proving you possess net encumbered capital.Note: Florida is considered a "no-fault" state. This means you must have personal injury protection (PIP) coverage for cars. The no-fault law does not apply to motorcycles in FloridaOnce you establish financial responsibility or buy insurance, you can show proof with your Financial Responsibility Certificate from the Bureau of Financial Responsibility or your Self-Insurance Certificate from the Bureau of Financial Responsibility or show your Insurance ID card from your insurance carrier. If you cannot provide proof of motorcycle insurance, you may face suspended driving privileges, suspended registration and license plates. When you go to get them back, there will be reinstatement fees.I can tell you from experience, if you are stopped in your car and cannot show the proof required, there is a $100 ticket for not having your card with you, and that is even if you have insurance. I never got stopped without it on my bike. You really should contact a Florida licensed insurance agent about requirements for insurance. I haven’t lived there in a few years.

If I finance a new motorcycle do I need full coverage?

RE :If I finance a new motorcycle do I need full coverage?
I live in Texas, 19 years old. I am going to buy a new 2011 ninja 250. I have the cash to pay for it. But I'd rather have payments. Does Insurance in the state of Texas REQUIRE you to have full vehicle coverage on a FINANCED vehicle?
Thank you!
