Why was instrumental music considered inferior?
That's a very subjective matter on instrumental music. Anyone that considers or states instrumental music is inferior, discounted all the great works through out the history of music. Such a statement would anger many aficionados of music, regardless of the genre, as every main sphere contains instrumentals that are with any vocals, whether it's Classical, Jazz, Blues, Country and Western, Rhythm and Blues/Soul, Rock and Roll. They all have pieces that are instrumental. For those who have to have vocals to every piece of music, they're short changing themselves on some great pieces of music. Music doesn't need vocals to express a feeling, the music is what sets the tone and feeling.
How can some instrumental music make people cry?
I was just wondering if there are psychological reasons as to why audio, with no lyrics can make people cry. I have a friend who doesn't even like trance music, but has said that trance music can make her cry. For me, music with strings can make me feel sad. Not to the point of crying, but it definitely makes me feel emotional. Do we associate these sounds with something else? I'm just trying to understand why music can trigger emotions. Another example is music in horror movies that makes people feel scared.

Good "dark" moody instrumental or electronic music?
Anyone know of any bands/musicians/whatever that have some really good moody and "dark" sounding instrumental or electronic music? Something with sort of a "techno" beat but darker? This may sound funny, but I tapped into the media files for my Half-Life (original one) game and the mp3 files are great and I'm looking for more.
Is singing and instrumental music haram in Islam? If yes, why?

In the Quran in Sura Luqman verse 6 Allah says that there is humiliating torment for those who purchase idle tales. Some scholars interpret this and think it refers to music. In Shahih Bukhari we have a hadith (hadith #5590) which states that the prophet Muhammad(SAW) feared that the Ummah will consider 4 things to be halal but in reality they are haram. the 4 things are 1)Adultery 2)Silk worn by men 3)Alcohol 4)Musical Instruments I guess its haram because it distances you from Allah. Why not read the Quran instead? May Allah(SWT) guide us to Jannah.
Does Hope College in MI have a OK instrumental music program?
Although we are looking at music education, my son may be good enough to go into performance at the Masters level and wants to make sure he is getting good enough training to do so. My son would concentrate in Saxaphone, with a first love of Jazz. They have an adjunct sax teacher, but a full time jazz program leader. He is also accepted at Central Mich and MSU, but we like the small liberal arts atmosphere of Hope.

But, I know exactly how you feel, since i face the same matter, but i'm working out a way. * First off all: music - and all kind of art, was actually a doing of worship. Arts first came as worship to God. Even the highest Angel of 3 was Lucifer the Angel of music and worshiping, until He/She became proud of Him/Herself and wants to be higher then the Lord, so He/She cast away to the dessert called Earh and given the authorothy to govern the Earth - even until now. * Now, I'm not forcing you to be a good believer, but one thing for me, I never want to be a half hearted to anything i do and i believe, so that i believe in Jesus, i must believe fully, and worship Him fully. * In this world, there's only 2 source, the Lord or the Devil, there's no middle way, no-neutral side. Same goes to what you're doing, it's only for the Lord or for Satan... Thus you must choose, remember everything that finger-warm has no part in Heaven. * Everything and doing could be judged, is it for the Lord's Glory, or not..... and that means its for the Devil.... * I'm not saying that somekind/genre of music was evil... there's no evil music/art, there's only evil human that use atrs/music. * So, i'm saying if you like Metal Rock, go find one that praise Jesus, why not? well, it's rare to find, i know... Music for figure skating competition?
Try to find music that is suitable with your program (upbeat or slow etc) and your skating style (powerful/technical or grace/elegant etc). Most importantly is that you need to be able to connect and "feel" the music/song/lyrics. What's your opinion on listening to music while writing a novel?
Well, of course, it all depends on the writer in question. Some people focus well with music in the background and some (like me) just don't. Personally, having music playing is just way too distracting because if I'm getting caught up in a song, I'm not focusing on writing. Also, if I'm in that mood where I'm just racing through a manuscript, I shut off the music because it's just annoying and trying to overpower the voice in my head (or so I tell myself).
