Do You See Any Allusions Or References In This Quote

Shakespeare allusions in songs or other texts?

Off the top of my head:

"Suicide is Painless" [themesong from the old TV show M*A*S*H] includes the line " . . . is it to be or not to be," which is from Hamlet.

The title of the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley (which I had to read way back in HS) is taken from a line in The Tempest ("Oh brave new world that has such people in't")

There is a line in the old classic movie The Maltese Falcon, in which Humphrey Bogart states "it's the stuff dreams are made of," which is a slight paraphrase of a quote also from The Tempest.

What is allusion? In what different ways can allusions be used?

It's a figure of speech that refers to something outside the context of the conversation, book, movie, etc.

Allusions can add humor, or color, imagery, power, or a sense of any number of things depending on what allusion is used.

"She's had the life of Job," is much more colorful and interesting than, "She's had a hard life." Plus, it brings to mind the Bible which adds a sense of religion and maybe even something of Providence behind whatever has happened to her.

Allusions can be used to be polite. "She's a regular Moll Flanders" is a nicer way of saying that she's promiscuous.

And power! If someone takes advantage of your trust, and you tell him, "Et tu, Brute?" ("Even you, Brutus?"), that's an allusion to Caesar's assassination by those who opposed his dictatorship, one of whom pretended to be his friend; Shakespeare wrote a play about it. Said in the right tone, it's less likely to provoke a violent reaction from your former friend than a more direct statement. And by alluding to a well-known historical act, and to such treachery to a friendship, it adds power to what you say. You have the combined force of murder, politics, treason, ancient Rome, Latin, and Shakespeare behind your words.

Here is what I can think of:The obvious 'The Godfather' reference. Mr. Big is eerily similar to Brando in The Godfather. There is the bit of 'an offer he can't refuse.’The Breaking Bad reference. A chemical lab is run by two sheep named Walter and Jesse.Frozen references:This. There is this guy named Duke Weaselton, which refers to the Duke of Wesselton in Frozen.References to our world:There is a plethora of tech references. Zootopia has Zoogle, Zuber, and Carrot (like Apple). The DMV, which is famous for being painfully slow, has sloths for employees. They are still faster. The primary message of the movie itself pertains to real life issues, which are very relevant to politics of today. Immigration, racism, and stereotyping form the core of the film. It's a lovely film.

You really don't. And in fact there is a published poet whose entire body of work is based on the principle. The Northern Irish poet Medbh McGuckian writes poems in which she takes lines wholesale from other works and puts them together to create the poems. Every line in her poems is written by someone else (almost always unacknowledged; one of my university tutors spends ages trying to track them down. Medbh, in return, refers to him as 'the indefatigable sleuth') but that's not the point - although the lines are written by other people the poems are hers.

Do you know of any modern allusions to the ten commandments?

Good examples of Allusions?

I am making a game of Jeopardy. I need four categories with 5 examples in each one. I already have allusions in poetry, movies, and literature. I need either allusions in lyrics, life quotes, or something different. Have any ideas? I can't do biblical allusions or ones containing myths because its a part of literature. I can't do tv shows because I have movies already which usually reference to shows or books anyway.

I really want allusions in lyrics. But it's hard to find. If only there were songs these days that easily (and strongly) alludes to points in time or something many people know about. I would like a mix of genres like something of Rhythm and Blues (Alicia Keys, Mariah Cary?), Country (Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift?), Rock or Pop (Boys like girls, Big Time Rush?)

But life quotes could be good as well... What do you think?

Are there allusions in "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost?

I'm doing an English project and I've been working on it for two weeks. I need to know if there are any allusions in the poem by Robert Frost- The Road Not Taken. If you do know of any and you found them off a website, please include the website.

Please don't tell me to do my homework, re-read the poem, or figure it out myself. I have been trying that for two weeks and I haven't gotten very far.

Thank you!

allusion-- An allusion is a figure of speech that makes a reference or representation of or to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art.

Do you know of any Biblical allusions in literautre?

If you mean biblical references in books ive read then i may know a few. It isnt exactly the pinical of theology but it does have a few references to the bible. Twilight: page 240. Line 14. "And so the lion fell inlove with the lamb." It is refering to the animals that the bible depicts to be resting in peace together in heaven. It states that the lion and the lamb would be lying together, serene and peacful. Also, the front cover of the book also comes from the bible. It is a picture of a mans hands holding an apple. It is refering to the forbidden fruit which was given from eve to adam. This fits into the storyline because of the love that is shared but is also forbidden. There are many other places in the series where the bible is reflected. From the commandments that the characters frequently speak of, to short symblisitc parts that are spoken of in the bible.
I hope this helped. I didn't really know how to answer. sorry if i didnt help and i know you'll probably not want to use Twilight because most think it is just a load of crap.
