Do You Think Food Stamps For Americans Should Be Discontinued So There Will Be More More Money For

Should welfare and food stamps be discontinued after a reasonable time?

It seems to be a lifestyle and once on the receiving end of these programs it's a way of life. Its especially sad the children of recipients just continue along the same lines when adults. I find it amazing that those on unemployment can find a job right after the checks stop. I'm all for helping those in need temporarily, but when generation after generation don't make any effort to support themselves maybe they just need a push. Comments?

Do you think it's wrong for someone who receives food stamps and welfare services to buy steak and lobster?

A friend and I had a heated argument on this subject and I just wanted to know how many people think that it's wrong for someone on food stamps to buy steak.

Lying to get food stamps/ Medicaid?

Let me say first, this is not me, I am writing a sociology paper about poverty vs middle class problems and such. What do you think of lying about income to get assistance? Not wealthy people lying, but poor people who make next to. Itching, but make slightly too much to qualify? Do you see it as wrong? If they don't make enough to afford food, but they make too much to get help, do you see them as bad, and belong in jail? Has anyone you have known ever gotten in trouble for lying to get food stamps? I'm getting peoples opinions toward the lower classes. But not about people that purposely have kids to get money, just regular families who fell on hard times, maybe due to a job loss or something? Does the government actually put people in jail for not reporting all of true income? I see so many families that are barely making ends meet, but they make only a little over the income limits. I feel bad for them personally. What are your opinions?

Is it true that Obama is going to raise welfare money and foodstamps to the poor?

Yes,he will raise the funds for those who refuse to help themselves and mooch off the taxpayers. But,he has already said that our seniors who have worked their entire life and paid into the system won't be getting a cost of living raise for the next 2 years. Pathetic.

Can you convert your Food Stamps to cash?

There are 2 options when they swipe their card. EBT food or EBT cash. If they use the cash option they can pull out whatever money the state gives them at the register, similar to an ATM. The food stamp money is separate from the cash, so they are pulling out of a totally different fund.

I think it is terrible that my taxes go to people that can waste their food stamps on soda, chips and microwave meals or can just take out cash and use it to buy drugs, alcohol, or whatever else they want. I've even seen people come in with their dealers and buy them groceries in order to pay for their drugs. Its really bad. : (

I'm thinking about going to a food pantry for my family this month. I feel bad about this. Should I? Our food stamps declined because I found a better-paying job.

I was in nursing school and working 3 jobs. I was a single mom. My car broke down frequently. So much so that my kids didn't want to ride in it. This was in the 90′s. Incidentally, I quit a production job at Microsoft to go to nursing school. I didn't qualify for other assistance because I had a home and my ex sent $1,000 per month. My mortgage was $1,200 per month. My ex was not in the home because I had turned him in for abuse with one of my children. He plead quilty by the way. So I was determined to keep my children in our family home.I just didn't have enough money to buy groceries and gas money to get to college. Reluctantly, I loaded my kids in the car and took them to the food bank. Each day when the food bank was opened a local church or organization would host a meal for those coming to get food. We were there at the end of the day and we got a few bags of food. There were no other people at the meal of lasagna and salad a local church had provided. They sat us down and gave us a great meal with French bread, salad, brownies and lots of conversation. They made us feel comfortable and wrapped up lots of leftovers for us . My 2 preteens were thrilled with the food. They also signed us up for Christmas gifts and food. A couple days before Christmas they called and told me they had gifts for each of us, a coat for my son, a favorite book for my daughter, a nightgown for me. When I went to pick it up, they filled the whole back end of my station wagon up with food! I cried as they loaded it and I cried all the way home. What meant the most to me and I remember most 25 years later is someone cared. Go to the food bank if you need it. You may not always need it but now you need the food and the care. You will find ways to give back to someone else in need.

Why do people sell their food stamps for half the amount they're worth?

People sell their food stamps for half the amount they’re worth because they need the cash. The individuals buying them are getting more food at a lower cost and tax free at that. The magic happens when a plastic card turns into cash. But mostly, there are no food stamp police.Actually, years ago I read that individuals could receive something if they reported the abuse of food stamps, but the only time I was informed about any abuse, was the time a gentleman was trying to get back at his girlfriend. When I asked if he would be willing to phone the abuse (food stamp) hotline, he advised that he thought he was calling the hotline and disconnected the call.  If receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, (TANF) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) when, let’s say, there’s a "habit", is the only source of "income", the monthly allotment just won’t last an entire month.I think a grand study would be to research the number of people who buy food stamps, (or a portion thereof) from individuals who have been approved to receive them. Do you think they would boldly step forward, waiving their hands in the air while saying, “I do I do!” would work? I wouldn’t hold my breath, but selling food stamps happens every day somewhere. My own boss shared once that, “back in the day” when she had food stamps, she did what she had to do… (with 4 children). Once the cash part of cash assistance runs out, food stamp cash is the back up.
