Do You Think I Have The Qualifications To Make It Into Nhs Nation Honor Society

How do u get into NHS (national honor society)?

You have to have a 3.5 GPA. I was accepted at my school, but we haven't actually had a meeting yet so I'm not sure about the community service.

Can you join the National Honor Society(NHS) in the 9th grade?

To a certain extent the requirements or joining the National Honor Society is set by the school.

Information is below.

What is so significant about being part of the National Honor Society in high school?

Not much, really. Some people list it on their college apps, but the benefit of doing so seems very marginal at best.I went to an informational presentation about it in my sophomore year, and the NHS coordinator hyped it up to be some extremely prestigious organization that would set you apart from all those “other kids” when applying to college. I then applied to the NHS at my school, but was rejected due to a lack of “leadership.” I guess that's what I got for not being religious or a sports team captain. Still, it didn't stop me from being accepted into three University of California campuses and another university campus, with two of the universities offering to subsidize substantial portions of my tuition.Oh, and what about one of my peers who applied to many colleges, but was part of the NHS? He got rejected or waitlisted from all but one of them. Now, the one benefit the NHS at your school might offer is community service opportunities, but the benefits really end there. The NHS is not the one key to college, and don't let anyone convince you of that. If they reject you like they did me, just live life and let your academic accomplishments speak for themselves.

What are my chances of getting into National Honor Society (NHS)?

So, I'm somewhat worried about whether or not I'll be accepted into NHS for my Senior year of high school. I am currently a Junior ( I just finished my Sophomore year last week), and have done virtually nothing within the last two years. However, this year, I plan to:
-Maintain my 4.0 GPA, or raise it higher
-Take AP Biology, US History, and Language and Composition
-Join LULAC
-Join FBLA
-Be a member of the school-sponsored tutoring group, the A-Team
-Theater (I did this last year, as well)
-Join track
-Get a part-time summer job at the local grocery store/restaurant
-be a school newsletter journalist

My school is also somewhat small, with around 700-800 students (if this is relevant to my chances being increased). So, based on all of this, what do you believe my chances are of being accepted into National Honor Society? All help is greatly appreciated!

Wats the big deal about being in the National Honor Society?

It looks great on college applications. You are being awarded for having good grades. Its a honor to be selected into NHS because you have to qualify for it. When I was in high school you got a letter saying you were qualified, but you also had to try out and do an application. Teachers then voted for the students they thought deserved that honor (ones who work hard in and out of class, are in activites and still receive great grades...etc) Plus when you graduate, you get to wear a sole, which shows everyone that you were in NHS.

Did you apply for NHS (National Honours Society)? What would you say is the most important thing for someone applying, senior or junior year, to focus on in their application/resume/personal statement?

A2A Did you apply for NHS (National Honours Society)? What would you say is the most important thing for someone applying, senior or junior year, to focus on in their application/resume/personal statement?First, like most pointed out, you cannot apply to NHS. If your school is a NHS participating school, qualified students will be nominated and inducted. I was inducted I believe Sophomore year of high school, but I moved between Junior and Senior years, and my new high school did not have NHS so it was rendered useless. I still put it in my college application because back in the late ‘80s, it still meant something.Nowadays, NHS doesn’t mean what it used to. In many schools, a large percentage of the class qualifies because of rampant grade inflation. For the top elite universities, nearly every applicant would qualify for NHS, so it really doesn’t mean much at all. It’s a nice honor to have for the sake of supporting what the rest of your application shows about you, but it’s really no longer an advantage for admissions where it really matters.Honors and College Admissions | Ivy Coach College Admissions BlogDoes National Honor Society Really Matter? Is Being A Member Of The National Honor Society Worth It?That being said, there are some schools that have highly selective honor societies where there are cut-offs as to how many students are admitted. Particularly if a school does not rank their students, belonging to this type of honor society would give a slight bump in the “stats” of an applicant by eluding to the fact that the student is at the top of their graduating class. My son’s school, for example, has the Cum Laude society. You must be in the top 10% of the class to even be considered, and even then, qualified nominees must also show character traits worthy of induction. It’s highly selective and an indicator of who is in the top 10%. His school does not rank, so showing in his application that he was a member of Cum Laude showed that he was indeed in that coveted 10% of his graduating class.Bottom line: If it’s important to you, do it. But it won’t mean much come admissions time.

Why didn't I get into National Honor Society?

I was rejected by my school's NHS chapter and I can't figure out for the life of me why. Here are my qualifications, if anyone knows why I am an unsatisfactory canidate for the society, I would be grateful for any ideas. (I am a junior with a 4.3 GPA)
• Community service club member since freshman year
• Student council representative and walk on (sophomore year)
• Writing tutor (junior year)
• Attendee of Congressman Kirk's First Annual 10th Congressional District Model Congress (sophomore year)
• Member of Mark Kirk’s Student Leadership Advisory Board (junior year)
• Featured in a PSA advocating the protection of Lake Michigan
• Active Adopt-a-family (community service project) participant since freshman year
• Tennis player since freshman year- JV letter
• Soccer player for freshman and sophomore year- JV letter
• Participant in the Experiment in International Living- Outbound Ambassador (summer 2007)
• Received Outbound Ambassador scholarship

Does joining National Honor Society require you to take all honor classes ?

No. You do not have to take any honor classes. You must maintain a high GPA and do community service.
