From MSNBC: Earlier today, we noted how conservatives -- especially the conservative media -- have been targeting Democrats and liberal-leaning groups, with some notable success. Several days ago, Obama administration official Van Jones resigned after conservatives highlighted his controversial statements and actions, like signing a petition suggesting the conspiracy theory that the 9/11 terrorist attacks might have been an inside job. Now, after two young conservatives (dressed up like a pimp and prostitute) produced videos apparently exposing ACORN employees encouraging fraudulent behavior, Republican lawmakers are trying to crush this group that they've long considered suspect. This dramatic step followed last Friday's decision by the U.S. Census Bureau to sever its ties with the organization, one of several community groups it was partnering with to conduct the nation's head count. Both of these actions came after secretly recorded videos involving employees in Acorn's Brooklyn, N.Y., Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Md. and San Bernardino, Calif. offices were televised on Fox News. The videos were recorded by two independent filmmakers who posed as a prostitute and a pimp and said they were planning to import underage women from El Salvador for the sex trade. What's wrong with pardoning Dinesh D'Souza?
I think there are multiple dimensions here:First of all, the whole idea of pardoning is somehow an atavism. A king was often also a judge, thus the right to pardon. But presidents or governors aren't kings. They run the executive branch. So what business do they have meddling with the judiciary branch? If at all, it should be about showing mercy.Meaning: a pardon that is used thinking about the “big picture” might be legitimate even today. Sometimes verdicts are simply not fair or out proportion. It seems reasonable, that in rare cases, the top representative of the executive uses this privilege.Unfortunately, many of the pardons we see or saw in the past were much more about politics.But worse: Trump obviously uses them as political weapon or “beacon”. To send messages.The message I get here is “the rule of law doesn't matter at all. And I can't pardon Roseanne Barr, so let's pardon that racist felon instead”.Horrible. Dangerous.But all fine with “law and order” “conservative” tribal men.
