Can you get an ear infection from a dog?

No you cannot get an ear infection from your dog.

I think your ear may be hurting because you feel guilty from cleaning your dog's ears with the WRONG medicine.

The peroxide bubbles in his ear and is very loud. That is hurting his eardrums. Cortizone is not meant for internal use - Plus it is human medication - read the label.

Please take your dog to the vet. They will give you a bottle of special solution to clean his ears. It won't bubble or fizz. They will also give you the proper antibotic for his ears. Not all ear infections are the same. They need the right meds.

He needs to see a vet. You could damage his hearing!

I have a lab who gets ear infections often and I have prescription medication on hand for her - prescribed by her vet!

My dog has an ear infection?

If you live near a farm supply or feed store, you can get antibiotics for livestock there. Atwood's or Tractor Supply Company. Terramycin can be used both topically and as an injectable. It will not cost as much as a vet visit (a bottle of injectable is around $8 where I live; I just bought some for my grandchildren's pony's infected eye 2 weeks ago). Ask advice for dosage and duration of treatment from the manager/owner as they are usually familiar with this.

Alternatively, go ahead and take her to your vet and ask for CareCredit. If you have a job or someone in your household/family does, they will most likely go ahead and prescribe an antibiotic. Call first and check; if that vet won't do CareCredit, try another one.

If you can afford it, get the best quality dogfood you can buy. Dogs (and any animals) that get poor nutrition are prone to infections and have shorter life spans.

Please do something for your dog. Ear infections are very painful, and she will loose her hearing.

And for those who disagree with my advice, I suppose they would rather the dog not get treatment...and they have no sympathy for the owner. I'm on here to help both. There are not enough homes for dogs as it is. I'm not going to tell anyone they don't need a dog because they can't find anyone who knows something other people don't.

HTH and I'm sorry you're in a bind. My dogs have kept me going when no human would help, and I know they prefer to stay with me, regardless of my situation.

How can I treat my dogs ear infection at home without any medicine?

First I would ask how you know it’s an infection, vs ear mites, or a tick? That asked, why on earth would you not want to use any “medicine”, and what would you think that would accomplish, other than prolonging your poor dog’s suffering? You haven’t described anything about your dog’s ears - color, discharge, smell, etc - or provided any photographs. If your dog is uncomfortable, in pain, and you love him/her, I think you owe it to him/her to go to a vet, and have it treated.IF you cant afford to go to a vet, and if you feel you can manage, maybe with a friend, buy some hydrogen peroxide at any drug store, or WalMart, or wherever, and also buy some ear mite cleanser from Petco or Petsmart or other pet supply store.Gently pour some peroxide in your dog’s ears (one at a time), let it fizzle for a minute, then clean it all out with cotton balls or paper towels - do this twice, and then rinse the ears out with some clean, lukewarm water, and dry. While doing this, really pay attention to what comes out - is it waxy, or crusty, or bloody-looking, or like coffee grounds, etc. Then, once you’ve done that, put a few squirts of the ear mite medication in each ear, hold the ears (gently) erect, and wiggle them around, then hold them out to the sides and wiggle them all around (this makes sure the liquid medication runs down into the ears, but also gets into as many of the crevasses as possible. Then take the ears at the base, near the head, and kind of squish and massage them (you should hear the squishy sound of the medication being moved around in there). Do that for a good minute or 2, and then take cotton balls or paper towel or a very soft cotton rag (old underwear is perfect), and gently swab out the insides of the ears - I go as far as my index finger can comfortably reach without digging or pushing. If you get a lot of dirt, blood, or ANY pus or ugly drainage, again, I can’t emphasize strongly enough to take your dog to a vet - an untreated infection or infestation can lead to deafness - and a LOT of pain! Anyone who can’t adequately care for a pet should really not have one!

Can i give my dog a bath with a ear infection?

i'd rather wait until pooch is all better. if you get water in the ear, it might just aggravate the problem and make it worse. i don't think the cotton wool in the ears is a good idea - i just know that my dog would go absolutely crazy if i tried that.
if your dog is really smelly, you can always get some of that spray on goodies from the vet as a short term solution. you spray it on your dog's coat and give him/her a good brush. it conditions the coat and leaves them smelling really nice.

Is it safe to use prednisone for my dog's ear infection?

This appears to be an old question but popped up in my Quora feed. I perused the answers and did not think any of them were 100 % accurate. It’s ok to use prednisone or prednisolone to treat an ear infection as long as it is part of a multi therapy protocol to treat the problem. It’s only function is to reduce the inflammation associated with the ear infection and make the dog feel more comfortable. The underlying cause must be addressed and often an ear cytology is performed at your vets office to help determine the proper course of medications. Do not ever put alcohol or peroxide in a suspected ear infection unless you want to inflict immediate pain on your dog and create more inflammation which is associated with more pain. Repeated ear infections are a constant source of headaches for veterinarians as they are most often linked to an underlying allergy which can be difficult to identify and treat. One type of ear infection from a pseudomonas bacteria which can only be diagnosed through an ear culture practically demands the use of steroids like prednisone. Pseudomonas secretes a thin layer of goo called a biofilm which covers the lining of the external ear canal and prevents the ointment or liquid medication that is being used to treat the ear from making contact with the infected skin. Prednisone is used to decrease the inflammation helping to break up the biofilm therefore letting the proper medication do its job in clearing up the infection. All of this should encourage you to realize that ear infections are not simple problems and almost always need a veterinarian’s imput.

What is the best home remedy for dog ear infection?

If your dog starts shaking its head or pawing at one side of the head you need to take it to the vet to get it checked for foreign bodies like grass seeds. But if you have done that and had otitis externa diagnosed, there is a home remedy that could help significantly. The bacteria can't grow in an acidic environment. If you dilute white vinegar, three parts water to one part vinegar, and warm a little (about 5 mls for the average dog) to slightly above room temperature, you have a harmless cure for ear infection. If there is pus in the ear, it needs to be removed first by a vet, then the 5 mls of dilute vinegar can be poured in by holding the tip of the ear up and out. The dog will violently shake it's head so hold firmly and speak to it until the vinegar is poured in. This is because the ear canal inside the head needs to then be massaged by rubbing the side of the head including the ear canal. This helps to get some mixture right down near the ear drum. Caution: if the ear drum is damaged or missing do not use vinegar. When you  have given it about a 20 second rub, let go of the dog and it will shake vigorously. Sometimes muck even flies out of the ear. So maybe best to do this outdoors. In chronic otitis, it needs to be done one or two times daily.

Please help! Home remedy for dog ear infection?

Okies you can't afford the vets, I appreciate how you are in these economic times, not easy.

There is some stuff available over the counter called Epi-Otic. It cleans the ears and skin in dogs and cats. I use it on my own.
It is not a remedy for infection but it does help with itching and scratching in the meantime.

Cost is $14 that is Aussie Dollars. Well worth it for even future use because it is great for dogs that swim and get water in their ears or even those that you just wash and for groomers. It softens wax, cleans the ear drum, dries out water and makes it easier to pluck ears on those types of breeds that need ear plucking.

Product description....A skin and ear cleanser designed to remove necrotic tissue and debris from superficial skin lesions and help provide an optimal environment for tissue regeneration. Useful in cleaning moist waxy and odoriferous ears.

Edit: Home remedy in the meantime, just some betadine or bathe with salt water. Mix 1 teaspoon of ordianary salt with 500ml boiled water. Allow to cool to a tepid temperature, then use liberally on affected area with cotton wool, dab dry with tissue.

LOVSWAY: scratching is a sign of ear mites. Epi-Otic will help. Years ago the stuff did used to kill ear mites. Not sure if it does nowadays. You can still get stuff over the counter without visiting a vet to get ear mite treatment.

Epi-Otic used to be called Ottoderm, it used to treat ear mites and also do the above product description. Over the years the product has changed in name and description. Just another way to get people to go to the vets I spose.
