Do You Understand The Political Spectrum

How do I understand the political spectrum?

First you have to understand that it's wrong. Politics cannot be displayed on one axis.Politics are displayd on a two axis system. The X axis is economical and the Y axis is liberty Vs authority. The further left you to the more centralised the economy will be.Go far left enough and private ownership of the means of production will be abolished.Go far right and there's no such thing as government ownership. Essentially everything is private property.Go up and there's heavy government control over the people. This applies regardless of whether or not it's “bad” control.Go down and there's no control over people. Anarchists are the ones you'll find spread out both left and right but always downwards.

Where are you on the political spectrum?

Where am I on the political spectrum?I am apparently a centrist.I took the [1] 8values Quiz. In an unforeseen result, I apparently came out as a centrist, which I can understand. It looks like I’ll be identifying myself as center-right from now on.Now, let’s break this down.Economic Axis: CentristWhen it comes to economics, I’m almost right down the middle. I believe in laissez-faire economics. Laissez-faire economics is correct in stating that leaving things up to the market ensures a good balance between supply and demand. However, my problem with leaving the market completely out of government control is monopolies. I believe that the government has an obligation to break up monopolies to stop a complete take over of a certain industrial sector by one company. Plus, letting the government have some control of the market allows the enforcement of worker’s rights and promotes competition between corporations. Hence, why I said that the government has an obligation to break up monopolies, to create competition. Competition -historically- makes companies create the best products for consumers.Diplomatic Axis: BalancedMy stance on the international government and domestic government is basically that while domestic governments should focus more on their own citizens, there’s still a need for domestic governments to be liable to the international community.I also support international trade because of the obvious benefits it provides. However, I believe that a government’s first priority is its citizens, not foreign countries and issues.Civil Axis: ModerateI believe in John Locke’s social contract. Basically that we all agree to accept rules to preserve safety in a society. I also believe in laws and natural laws. That’s why I will defend the second amendment. One, to fight a tyrannical government like the Battle of Athens, and two, because it is our God-given right to own a firearm. The government can place some restrictions, but not like California. The government is there to serve the people. However, we have to respect the rules and laws that we the people put in place. So respect police officers okay?Social Axis: NeutralI do believe that preserving tradition is important, however I believe that scientific progress should continue at a steady rate. I believe in a compromise between progress and tradition.TLDR; I believe in bipartisan politics to an extent; I do have my exceptions. Thanks for the A2A!Footnotes[1] 8values Quiz

Is the political spectrum changing?

Part of the issue with judging people on a simple, one-dimensional spectrum is that it doesn't allow for much diversity of views along that spectrum. Often, a simple political spectrum is like taking a political compass, for example:and taking a single line of any sort, (curves and parabolas work too) and claiming that all of politics can fit on this line. When you do that, you can easily end up categorizing people in specific political ideologies that they may very well disagree with greatly. For example:Here, you might say that anyone of whom is on the right is closest to a Neo-Nazi, and anyone on the left is closer to a communist. While you can make arguments for both of these, they don’t take into account people like Libertarians, of whom are far from fascists in their desire for open borders, support of the 2nd Amendment, like the GOP, and support for legalized marijuana much of the time. This also doesn’t explain all the different branches of communism, of which can sometimes vary drastically in how they desire to change society (their results don’t vary much, but that’s another story) from anarcho-communism to Stalin and Mao. For the spectrum above, it makes politics look like a parabola on the compass where -Social Freedom = (Economic Freedom)^2. However, I would agree that the general range on the compass where society is as a whole is changing, generally down towards social libertarianism.

Where would Alexander Hamilton be on the political spectrum? Also was he for free trade? Explain?

He certainly wouldn't be a modern liberal. No one then would be.

All of the founding fathers agreed on the nature and purpose of government. They disagreed on whether or not a decentralized government was necessary to prevent abuses of power. Hamilton was on the side of being in favor of a centralized government but as we've seen the last century or so he turned out to be wrong.

Where is totalitarianism on the political spectrum?

It exists on both the Left and Right.

Totalitarianism is the result of an INDIVIDUAL who is opposed to Democracy.

Where do Canadian parties stand on political spectrum?

The Conservative Party's move further towards the Bush-Reagan mix of free market economics with social conservatism makes the somewhat mercurial Liberals look more moderate, despite their own rightward drift. An emphasis on environmental issues has helped the Liberals downplay deep differences within the party on other key issues. The Greens, more fiscally conservative than most of their sister parties, also harbour significant left-right differences within their ranks. Similarly Bloc Québécois is united in its core cause, but considerably divided in other policy areas. In provinces where the NDP has governed in recent years, social spending cutbacks and other nods towards neoliberalism place the party today closer to where the Liberals were two decades ago
