An executive producer is usually responsible for funding, either providing the money or finding it. Sometimes making a pitch to a studio to back a project. Also, it is a give-away credit to someone who has helped put the project together the project but is not directly involved. You hope the EP never shows in set. It makes cast and crew nervous.A producer is generally responsible for daily financial activities and logistics. Manage the money and make sure all the equipment and cast are where they need to be and when they need to be there. Essentially in charge of the non-creative activities and oversees the creative side. A producer also hires staff and approves contracts.A line producer is the same as a producer, though with less over-all responsibilities and authority. Essentially an accountant more than anything else. He/she is on set and usually only works the run of the production where an overall producer works from early in development and is sometimes involved in funding.A segment producer is basically a producer or line producer responsible for only a portion of a show or a single episode. Look at GAME OF THRONES. There is an over all producer (More than one. It is a large project.) Then there are segment producers who manage the activities at the different locations.Responsibilities can interchange and be fluid, but that is the basic breakdown. A film producer… produces the film, a production manager… manages the film. Clearly the titles tell the broad stokes of both those roles. More specifically though… a producer initiates the project from an initial idea, or a finished screenplay, or an existing IP (a novel or play or a remake they may have bought the rights to, to then hire a writer to adapt).A producer also oversees screenplay development, raises the financing, hires the director, attaches named actors in order to seek pre-sales as part of the financing plan (pre-sales are distribution agreements with various territories that can then be monetized through bank loans or other equity as part of the film’s production budget). So a producer is the person or persons who put the whole thing together from the ground up, see it through pre-production, production and post-production, and then bring it to the market (and festival circuit) and manage the revenue of the of the film thereafter. What does "produced by" mean in a movie?
Actually, a producer wears a lot of hats. yes, finding the financing is part of it. but there's more. getting the movie stars to agree to do the movie is another part. so they perform the negotiations to give the big name actors what they want so they get a movie they can then sell to distributors. producers are involved in making deals with movie distributors. In addition to making decisions on the lead actors, producers typically hire the writers - or purchase the screenplay/ or rights to a story. they also hire the director. there are different types of producers - the executive producer is more involved in all the aspects of the movie including having a say in how the movie is edited - known as final cut approval. producers are also involved in how the movie will be advertised. some producers only deal with the budget and schedules - making sure people are paid - making decisions on overtime and stuff like that. Line producers create a schedule of all the shots and have lots of work to do everytime something unexpected happens - rain, someone's sick, etc. producers are the ones who find the financing/investors and set the production in motion and do whatever it takes to keep the movie on budget and deliver it on time. this is why "best picture" academy award goes to the producer not the director. the producer is typically the boss of the entire project.
