Does Anybody Have A Better Concept Map / Network Map Alternative To

How can I make a network tree concept map?

The easiest way to create a network concept map is simply to visit any of a number of websites that allow you to create a title, select the type and arrangement of the the concept map, enter the information for the map, and print the final product when you are satisfied. Detailed instructions are available should you have a question at any point.

I have listed several such websites below for you to use should you wish to do so.

What alternatives are there to Scapple or CmapTools for non-hierarchical concept mapping, that run on Windows or web?

Try our web based concept map maker. You can easily add concept and link to them to see the relationsImport images to make it more memorable and easier to digestAdd links to external sources within the diagram itselfExport or embed them while preserving the links ( you can’t do this if you export as an image and add it to a website etc. )Plus we have some powerful productivity features to make the process faster as shown in the image.

Does making a Mind Map work? Does anyone have a personal experience to share?

The usefulness of a mind map, depends entirely on the situation at hand. Creating mind maps more unnecessary things will only consume time, and not contribute sufficienctly to your efficiency.Take a moment to assess your situation. Do you have to understand a group of concepts, each interconnected with others, and numerous enough that they cannot be visualized together? If not, then a mind map may not be the most useful thing to create. Maybe try a list, or a graph? If yes, then go ahead and make a mind map. But keep the following tips in mind:Keep it condensedDon't overcrowd it with every possible piece of information. Only include essentials.Make connections where requiredCreating a network helps your brain when the time for recalling comes.Don't spend too much time making itIf you end up spending more time making the mind map than it would take for you to learn the material raw, you're doing it wrong. As for my experience, here's a quick and dirty scan of the mind map I used to learn parts of organic chemistry:

Will mind maps, Cornell note taking and the SQ5R method all work together for studying? If so, how?

Presumably you are already familiar with the working of the SQ5R reading/studying methodology, the Cornell Method of Note Taking and Note Making and mind maps in your studies, I like to take this opportunity to offer you the following proven tips:The SQ5R, because of the inherent process steps in the methodology, helps you to fish out the key ideas and/or salient points very efficiently and effectively while navigating the textbook terrain; The Cornell Method allows you to organise the gathered information and ideas from 1) into the respective columns as designed in the format.Instead of translating usual textual facts into the Notes Column of the Cornell Method, translate them into mind maps and/or other graphic organisers, like Venn Diagrams, Causal Loop Diagrams, Fishbone Diagrams, Matrix Diagrams, etc.Feel free to have a mixture of textual notes and mind maps, and/or other graphic organizers, in the Notes Column. Don't duplicate. As usual, pose your questions in the Cue Column, corresponding to the Notes Column.Your train of understanding after reading, prior to note taking, and note making, should always be the guiding force in 2), 3) 4) and 5), bearing in mind that the purpose of note taking and note making is a fast memory recall.Your Summary Colum works as usual. Be cogent and concise.During lesson revision, fold the page of notes one-third way from the right. That’s to say, your Notes page is now covered from view. Proceed to test yourself with the questions on the Cue page. If you encounter knowledge gaps in recall, just unfold the Notes page. This is the most powerful aspect of the Cornell Method. I recommend reading this wonderful article: 2 Important Strategies for Effective Studying | World of PsychologyGiven a choice, I would add this initiative at the end of each chapter of Cornell Notes: Consolidate and summarise all the Note Pages into a global mind map.Prior to your final exam, you may even want to consolidate and summarise all the global mind maps you have done into an even larger global mind map, using a large-sized butcher paper, subject by subject. Paste the completed product on the ceiling over your bed, so that you can do a revision before hitting the sack. No puns intended.Good Luck!

Does anybody use mind maps? If so, which is the best method (i.e., software, if applicable) and why?

I have used mind map for many years. Mind map is a greate tool for people, especially for busy people. It allows you to plan, organize, plan, and present details efficiently and effectively. A mind map promotes bigger-picture thinking, improved problem-solving, and is a valuable tool for team collaboration. As far as i am concerned, my favourite mind map software is Edraw Max. The main reason is this software is very cost-effective, just $5.75 per month . Also, it can meet my all needs and it is Vision alternative too. So, i choose Edraw Max.Here’s some features of Edraw Max , hope that could helpful. All pre-drawn shapes are already built in the program. After you install Edraw, there is no need to download or insert before use.2. Just drag and drop or copy and paste any shape you like. Predefined shapes eliminate the drawing requirement, enabling even novices to gain professional-level diagrams. Attached text boxes can adjust themselves automatically, making it easier to support text.3. Thousands of ready-made templates make users instantly productive.4. Works with MS Office well. It can be integrated with Microsoft Office application easily. The UI is MS Office-style like so it's easy to learn and use. If you are familiar with MS Office, you will become familiar with Edraw soon.5. It can run on Windows, Mac and Linux smoothly. For more details, you can have a try. They are also offer a trial version for a month, you can use all functions in the software.

What evidence is there for the effectiveness of concept mapping and mind mapping?

Based on a review of 58 empirical studies, Nesbit (2006) reports in Table 5 that concept maps are much more effective when students construct maps collaboratively than when students work individually to construct maps or study pre-constructed maps. However, how much students can learn from making concepts maps would seem to depend on what extent students know how to create accurate high quality maps. Unfortunately, research findings show an incredible amount of variance in the quality of students’ concept maps. Furthermore, there is very little and weak research that have empirically identified and tested the mapping processes (e.g. forward vs backward approach, breadth vs depth first approach, left to right vs right to left organization, top to bottom vs bottom to top organization, etc.) that produce higher quality maps. In addition, the criteria used to measure the quality of concept maps are questionable, and are lacking in precision/sophistication, predictive validity and congruency with the targeted learning outcomes and the fundamental unique affordances gained from creating concept maps.As a result, further gains in learning with concepts maps could be achieved if concept mapping tools incorporate mechanisms to: 1) log, monitor, and analyze users’ mapping behaviors as they are constructing maps; 2) provide real time feedback based on behavioral/log data and on real-time automated comparisons and graphical juxtapositioning of the learners map over the criterion map (or another fellow student’s map to facilitate collaborative learning); and 3) automate the assessment of the quality of concept maps using criteria at a higher level of sophistication and validity (e.g. extent to which students identify the complete sequence of nodes linking root nodes to final node in every branch of a concept map).To this end, I’ve developed a concept mapping tool/prototype in Excel called jMap that can capture students mapping processes, potentially provide automated feedback to identify and score links that match (green arrows) and do not match (gray arrows) between the user’s map and the instructor’s or any another student’s map, identify and score root cause/nodes that match (green halo surrounding node) and do not match (gray halo), score students’ ability to identify the chain of events/concepts linking root nodes to the final/outcome node, and used to quickly identify differences between students’ maps to facilitate collaboration and consensus between students.

Concept Maps vs. Mind Maps - which help you more in learning?

Based on my own personal and professional experiences as user first and then coach, I like to share my perspectives:First things first: You can read up these insightful articles:Concept Map (an American invention, attributed to educator Prof Emeritus Joseph D Novak at Cornell, now 83):Cmap | Cmap SoftwareMind Map (a British invention, attributed to educator Tony Buzan, now 73);Mind Mapping | Tony BuzanBoth are intended as graphical methods for organising and representing ideas and knowledge. In terms of tactical execution, they are radically different.Concept Map has a quick, no-frills approach. Key words or phrases (Novak likes to call them, "concepts") are captured in circles or boxes, cross-linked to each other, in a hierarchical format, with superordinate concepts right at the top and subordinate concepts successively arranged right below.Mind Map has a more fanciful approach, with radiating lines, colours, images, icons or symbols.Key words or phrases (Buzan likes to call them, "ideas") are captured in circles or bubbles, radiating in a successively singular fashion from a centralised key idea. The radiating lines need to be thickened or enlarged at the origins, and colours, images, icons or symbols are then added to embellish the map.In my view, this is the principal disadvantage of Mind Maps, as every piece of information has to revolve around and evolve from the centre. For navigating scientific materials, especially the intellectually complex and intense ones, Concept Maps is the best option, purely because of the intensive cross-links between concepts in different segments or domain. To be a fast and versatile learner today, my expert recommendation is to learn to embrace and use a smorgasbord of visual tools to help navigate different academic materials, and more importantly, to flesh out key ideas and salient points with ease and expediency, so that the mind can  have diverse and myriad ways to organise and process information and ideas.

What's good and bad about mind mapping?

Home - Sunni Brown  Key comparisons:Time vs. Advantages Visualization (?)Some people may like map mapping vs. microsoft word experienceIt doesn't have the persuasive potential of other mediums.Relational data/Networks might be better experessed in mind-maping/visualizationsYou can collect notes all in one page--which could be helpful for processes.I imagine people who are learning a one off area....the mind map might be more interesting.Visual-spatial learners may like creating mind maps better....and may like using them as well. For other cases for mind mapping, you might look to:1) Home - Sunni Brown (Doodle Revolution/Sunni Brown)2) Welcome (Alpha Chimp a graphic visualization firm)3) Visual thinking for the business world (Dan Roam, Back of the Napkin)4) Barry Buzan (hes a creativity guy)Ultimately: Mind mapping--as described by Terrance is good for: Worksheets, processes, checklists, relationships between concepts, and visual communication.  It also probably will travel better on the web, assuming its not a story or essay.Prezi:To me Prezi is a particular kind of mind map.  You might check out or consider the advantages and disadvantages of it specifically given that its not only a mode of communication but a technology (although the point of comparison there will often be power point vs. a document I would assume). I wouldn't say either of these is brilliant, but both might be worth scanning: Prezi - Advantages and Disadvantages - Instructional Tech TalkPrezi: A Dynamic Presentation or Nauseating Experience? | GradHacker @insidehigheredThe nausea or distracting potential might be challenging. Not sure what level of design skills you need to take full advantage of Prezi in terms of visualizing relationships.

Who invented mind mapping?

Well, I partly agree with the answer of Roy Grubb.. that Mind Map was "popularized" by Tony Buzan, however I fail to believe that he actually invented it.There is an extremely thin line between visual thinking and mind mapping. There are numerous pictorial evidences that suggest that Porphyry of Tyros a noted thinker of 3rd century first introduced it. The same technique was also used by Ramon Llull and alike. Therefore, as per my understanding the present form of mind maps, as we know today (software & all) may gradually have been modified & later presented by Tony Buzan. However, the original idea of mind mapping, which is an integral element of a human's nature is independent of it. Like for example: The Hindu Scripture Mahabharata talks about a guy called Sanjay, who can remotely see the happenings of war and narrate them to the blind King while being hundreds and thousands of miles away from the field of action. Now, when the incidents are narrated to the blind king, he visualizes the war and mind maps who all are fighting whom, who is winning, who is loosing and much more. He can readily map out the war in his brain.  It is said that Mahabharata was written somewhere between 8th to 9th Century BCE. This is one of the many examples of mind mapping, where the central idea was "War" and factors like who fought whom & who won and how, came in the later stages of mapping.I am sure there might be similar experiences from mythology and scriptures across the globe, so if you ask me, pinpointing one single person who invented Mind Map is very difficult. It might have begun from the times of early man, when they might have mapped out their hunting schedule and more.As per my understand, Mind mapping per say, cannot be invented, it is a state of mind, which nowadays can be eased out with the help of a Software.
