What do tourists buy in your country that makes you wonder why?

CanadaMaple SyrupThe second best tourist trap after the CN Tower.I know maple syrup is only produced in Eastern Canada and the Northeastern US, but it isn’t even that special. It literally tastes like syrup, but I’ve seen my Chinese relatives do crazy things with them such as:Drinking it like waterI kid you not, some of my relatives drink maple syrup straight out of the bottle. And they hate it. I wonder why…In Chinese cuisine, there are very few things that are similar to syrup and many relatives do not know what to do with it. So they just chug it.Feeding it to their petsDo I even need to explain how dumb this is?Using it as sugarNeed some desserts? Got a brand new bottle of maple syrup from your relatives that live in Canada. Why not just pour a fuck ton of it on your dessert and make it inedible?I’ve got nothing against maple syrup and I love it, but they buy $25 bottles at the airport for the same amount you get for $10 at Costco.P.S. did you know a bottle of maple syrup costs around 35 times more than gas?Edit 1: Just a clarification that maple syrup can be bought at Costco in Canada

Is Game of Thrones really that good? Why do critics and the public like it so much?

I’ll jump straight into it.One main reason why Game of Thrones is so popular with fans and critics is that it's an incredibly successful crossover hit. What does that even mean?Well, it's a show that has gained high popularity with two types of audiences: Fantasy/Medieval enthusiasts & people who generally enjoy a good show, regardless of genre.Game of Thrones is successfully telling human stories in a fantasy world. There is something for everyone to enjoy:ViolenceSexDramaHorrorRomanceComedyWitchcraftFantasyGame of Thrones features some of the best World-Building we have ever seen in both a television and novel series. It’s loaded with symbolic commentary, explicitly aimed at the central political and social issues that were common during the medieval era. Because this world is so elaborate and carefully constructed, the audience can easily become emotionally invested in everything that occurs. The writing is smart, the characters are well-developed and sometimes unpredictable, and the storylines are un-politically correct. In a certain sense, it symbolizes the destructiveness and divisiveness of politics, something that has become the norm in modern-day America.Nothing is as it seems. Bad guys triumph over good guys and gain power, women are abused, and characters that are seen as “different” are mocked and marginalized. It expands the typical boundaries of story-telling conventions and does so effectively. Issues of race, gender, and social status are prevalent; however, the differences between certain characters (Tyrion's height or the “savage” Dothrakis for example) are not celebrated. Instead, they are presented without bias to ensure the audience determines where they stand on these issues by utilizing their own opinions and the knowledge they gain from the show. Most shows today are not this profound which is why Game of Thrones is the best thing on TV.What do you think? Does Game of Thrones deserve the popularity its gained? Or has the show declined since the first three seasons?Let me know in the comments!Alice G. Walton at Forbes wrote a strong piece on why most critics and fans love Game of Thrones.
