Alto or Tenor Saxophone?

Hey everyone,
With the school year starting soon, I've got a high school grad project to think about.

For my project (which has already been approved), I've chosen to learn to play the saxophone. Currently I'm preparing to call around and search for rental/lesson prices and whatnot so I figured I'd ask a question: which type of saxophone would you reccomend to a beginner? From what I've heard, alto's a better starting point, although I'd like more opinions.

As background info, this would be my first woodwind instrument, although I can read and transpose music on some level (I've been playing battery and mallet percussion for around for four years now), if that means anything.

Thanks for any answers, and apologies If I posted this is the wrong section.

Did Kenny G kill the saxophone?

Many of the answers here are quite good and valid. I can’t disagree with much that has been said. Kenny G didn’t kill the saxophone in any way but what he actually did was revitalize the saxophone and brought the soprano sax out of obscurity.I was in high school (sophomore year) when his Duotones album came out. This was the one that featured Songbird. The video was placed into a high rotation on both VH1 and MTV so everybody saw it and the top 40 radio stations also started playing it. Many of my friends thought he was playing some weird looking gold clarinet. Even some members of my schools sax and clarinet section didn’t know what a soprano sax was or sounded like.Prior to this you would have been hard pressed to walk into a music store and find a soprano sax or even a recording of one. Prior to Kenny G the most famous soprano sax recording was likely John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things. Other than Selmer Paris and Yamaha I can recall any one else that made sopranos at that time and the price on them was pretty steep. After Kenny G the number of manufacturers making the soprano along with the various models exploded. The prices dropped and many of the old designs were suddenly improved. Compare the upper stack and palm keys of a Mark VI soprano to a current model and you can see what I mean. It became a standard practice for sax players to not only to own an alto and tenor but they needed a soprano as well.Say what you will about his music and ability all you like just remember he didn’t kill the sax, he brought an almost dead member of the family back to life.

Which is easier and sounds better: Alto or Tenor Saxophone?

Honestly, it’s by preference. Personally, I can’t pick which I would like better; it really just depends on the sound I want for each circumstance. Altos are more high-pitched and are more natural as a lead voice for a sax section; tenors have a deeper, more soulful voice that is great for solo work. However, I have heard fantastic tenor-led sax solis and phenomenal alto ballad solos, so there aren’t really any hard and fast rules here. For judging the type of sounds you want, the best way is unquestionably listening to professional alto and tenor players. (Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley were legendary alto players, while John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter are great tenors from history if you’re looking for suggestions.)As for which is easier, people typically start with altos if they’re younger simply because altos are smaller and lighter than tenors. Altos are also cheaper. However, the two have identical fingerings and while switching between the two can be challenging at first because of differences in embouchure, it can be done. Alto is easier for me only because I play alto a lot more than I play tenor, so tenor feels heavier and more awkward to me. But if I played tenor just as much, I’d probably say that the difficulty is about the same.In short, you can sound fantastic on either (or both!) if you put in the effort. Good luck!
