How to I get rid of hives?
Hello All, I need your help. My niece Kimberly Ann has had a very intense case of the Hives since Tuesday 7/10. As she completed that day, Kimberly did gardening and washed the Bird Cage. She has been taking benedryl since Tuesday Night. The Benedryl makes the hives go completely away, however when it wears off the Hives are back covering her entire body and face, itchy and swollen bumps. I took her to the emergency room on Friday 7/14 because I thought she was taking the Benedryl for too many days. At the emergency room they gave her a shot of Cortisone, and a prescription for Prednisone. Today is Sunday and the hives are really bad I called the emergency room back and was told Kim should start taking the Benedryl with Prednison. The Benedryl is the only thing that gives relief, and the hives go completely away. The Doctor informed her if she is not better by Tuesday 7/18 to come back. Any help is greatly appreciated. Kim has had no new foods, no new detergents, or soap. Thanks MIA

Unless you have an antihistamine that you can give him, I would put him in a stall with no food - just water, and see if the hives start to go down. Typically hives are caused by allergic reactions. However those reactions can come from something they come in contact with, something they eat, a bug bite, even infection can cause hives. I would keep him in a stall with just water for at least 12 hours to see if the hives go down. That should rule out a contact allergy from something in his enviroment aswell as ruling out anything he ate. If the hives persist or get worse I would call the vet.

I would take Benedryl one hour "before" I usually broke out, and then when it was 'the time', I would get only 3 to 5 hives instead of tons of them. It helped tremendously by taking the pills at the right time, before you usually break out. Animals are a huge hive factor as is some foods. With me I could not figure it out, nothing worked until I dieted and lost weight. No more hives. Keep your skin as cool as you can. Heat is a huge factor in getting hives or making them worse. I have a fan by my recliner while Im watching TV and a fan by my bed to keep my skin cool.

I have chronic hives and they used to breakout everywhere except my face. Now they breakout mostly on my forearms right after I've washed vegetables. Hives are usually a result of an allergic reaction but it can also be stress related. Benadryl will stop the itching and allow the hives to go away on their own (scratching them only makes them worse). However it makes me really drowsy. Not good for daytime use. I had to use Claritin when I developed a bee allergy- more hives- AGH! The stuff actually gets rid of the hives. It was still prescription when I took it but it's over the counter now. You can use regular Claritin but they make one especially for hives that you can probably find in some pharmacies. It works well and is good for widespread hives. I used Zyrtec years ago at the beginning of my chronis hives. It's precription medication and your hives aren't widespread enough to need it. Since your hives seem to be limited to just your forearms, it seems like a mild case and you should probably try not taking any oral medications first. Avoid scratching your arms as much as possible- as I said scratching makes them worse. They should go away on their own. You can try using an anti-itch cream (benadryl cream works) to stop the itching. An all-natural anti-itch cream is the kind than works becuase it contains peppermint oil or menthol. This balm is popular with Chinese/Asian people and the most famous brand is Tiger Balm. You've probably heard of it. It's good for smaller areas of hives and mosquito bites, b\c the stuff smells pretty strong and if you use too much you'll smell like a huge mint stick or something.
