Why are laptop cameras' resolution so low?

I believe that the majority are still the US TV standard of 640 * 480 and have a reduced color depth. This is so that the image can be compressed and uploaded from your laptop in real time.If you had 4k+ webcam, the laptop or phone could not possibly compress (power restraints) and transmit (lack of bandwidth) a real time image to the other end.Remembering that you available upload bandwidth is usually much lower than your download bandwidth, the compression must take into account the slower upload.

New high end phones have 3+ megapixel cameras in them. These ccds are getting cheaper and cheaper to produce. At the end of the day - a cheap webcam is always going to be a cheap webcam. If you're looking for some high res stuff - you're going to spend some bucks on a nice x2 or panasonic.
0.3 megapixel webcam quality on a laptop?
i've been looking at laptops lately and i want a built in webcam and i've seen some cheap ones with 0.3 megapixel cam. is that good quality? and if you've got some can i see come pictures that you have thats been taken with a 0.3 megapixel thanks xx
