What makes science fiction unique from other genres?

The Science. Which, in ‘Science fiction’ is often ignored.Stories like Dune and Star Wars are what I call superficial science fiction. They are a good old fantasy story in a futuristic setting. We could very well write Dune as a one-planet story and it would still be a great story. We could replace laser/futuristic weapons with swords, those hydro-suit wearing desert people with some other magic/ traditional wisdom based water-conservation method-using desert people, and the story would remain unchanged.There is nothing unique about superficial science fiction as a genre. Now this does not mean you can’t enjoy those stories - Dune is a lovely read.Science fiction, or the fiction that Asimov writes, has science embedded in each of its constituent literary atoms.For example, the short story, Nightfall.[SPOILERS BEGIN]If the planet was not in orbit in a weird star-system, the story would fail, in a whole variety of ways.If there was not a dual-planet, the story would fail.If the theory of gravitation was discovered earlier (I mean computers were invented in this world, but gravity remained undiscovered), the story would fail.There was a compelling reason for gravity to not have been discovered - read point #1.[SPOILERS END]Asimov builds his worlds with such delicate love and care its amazing. And while many writers build worlds like that, science-fiction writers need to incorporate the very real and limiting laws of science into their world.True science fiction has a unique balancing act. Play too safe (honestly, bits of 1984 were like this for me) and you are boring. Play too fast-and-lose, and it’s no longer sci-fi, it’s magic.The challenge is just how far can you run with existing knowledge of science? That challenge, that balancing act is unique to true science fiction.
