Does Apple Maps Use Up Your Internet Allowance

What are some tips and tricks to save the amount of internet data usage?

Thanks for A2A. This question made me think for a while. Although I always use broadband with unlimited plan, this maybe helpful for people using dongle, limited use broadbands, data card and 2G, 3G SIM based mobile internet. To add to the existing answers which already pretty much give an idea how to save amount of data usage. I would like to add following practices:-1) Download things like PDFs instead of opening the same resource on webpage.2) Turn on your cache and cookies. So that next time you load the page which uses same images, texts and preferences. These resources will be fetched from local computer(Literally No data usage for these). Cookies are used by websites which will store your preferences information and enhance your website experience by choosing already set preferences by you. For example, when I use BookMyShow, my cookies save that earlier I had set Pune as my current city and thus this will load Pune's Movie shows and not the default landing page of BookMyShow.3) Use email client (Example Mozilla Thunderbird, outlook) to check emails and compose emails instead of the web client. Web client consume  unnecessary data in showing ads, loading new images, etc4) Similarly for chatting, you can download Jabber, gtalk, yahoo chatting client, skype instead of their web page version. For example, Use of gtalk instead of chatting in web gmail version is will consume less data.5) Use of Command line web browser in Linux. Lynx (web browser). I believe this greatly reduces the data usage, as by default it does not loads any images(Configurable).  CLI based use of browser uses less data than GUI based. Here is the Video of Lynx 6) Advertisements on youtube and how to remove these advertisements by installing Browser extensions like AdBlock, remove all ads, etc.Hope this helps.

How does a smartphone's GPS work? Does it work only with internet?

A smart Phone have a GPS module internally attached in the electronic circuit but it is an assistive model which means it will be connected to some GPRS Module .A GPS Module don’t need a internet but to get its location values it requires a stable connection with satellite and it will registered to the satellite network there but the data which it receives will contain location of the gps module only. Therefore as like Andrew Rump sir mentioned google maps like apps which requires location of different places surrounding the gps can’t be recorded without the internet so we will use internet to get connectivity with apps like that .Otherwise if still u want to follow a map with gps without internet u can do it u can make a route in google my maps and you can download the file which is a .kmz file or .kml file and then you can use this file in different software to fix a path and u can follow the coordinates by just precise measurement which is practically impossible as u cant precisely measure how much coordinate you are shifted morever it still not shows the different places surrounding the gps .So smartphones gps requires internet for the different type of functions which u use but a manual GPS module doesn’t require that but in the intial few second it must be placed in some open place (not in a closed room ) as it have to get registered still some Strong GPS devices doesn’t require to be kept in open atmosphere .This I have learned when I am working in a GPS -GSM based project, may be this may have some wrong statements but this is my opinion upto what I have read about GPS.

Will Runkeeper's GPS work without internet access? Will RunKeeper Elite's feature of live GPS updates for people watching my runs remotely work when I am not connected to the internet?

RunKeeper will be able to track your run using iPhone or Android GPS even without Internet access.  The next time you have net access when you launch RunKeeper, it will sync your run(s) into the RunKeeper platform.  This sync will make them available to any RunKeeper partner apps you have connected to your account via http://RunKeeper.com/apps as well.RunKeeper Elite live tracking during the run(s) will not work, however, because that requires a live Internet connection to send the tracking data to our system.

Why does my battery drain faster when I have WhatsApp open?

WhatsApp does not have a logout mechanism. The application is designed to always be connected so that you receive your messages quickly, even when you are not actively using your phone. This is similar to how SMS works and allows WhatsApp messages to be delivered almost instantly. We understand that this may raise concerns about battery life and data usage, but rest assured that we take these issues very seriously and strive to conserve battery and data as much as possible. We continue to make improvements in every version. You can also make sure WhatsApp uses Wi-Fi whenever available rather cellular data:Open WhatsApp and go to Options > Settings > Network > Connect priority.Make sure the priority is set to Wi-Fi, Cellular. However, WhatsApp strongly recommends that you have an unlimited data plan. WhatsApp works by using your Internet data plan to send and receive messages (just like emailing). So, if you do not have an unlimited data plan, WhatsApp may consume your data allowance and your mobile service provider may charge you accordingly. Here is more information - WhatsApp FAQ - WhatsApp is always on and connected, how do I log off?

How much data do Google Maps, Waze, and similar apps take if you use them for car navigation?

It depends:-from the navigation distance (more "map tiles" need to download)-the route were uses earlier (it is cached or not)-the territory that You drive trough ("more domesticated are = more data usage")I'm using Waze since 4 years in Europe, sometimes every day. Usually I'm driving between 50-500 kms (30-300 miles), and the destinations are different. It costs ~ 100-150 Mb/ monthIf You calculate the route with Waze at home (with WiFi connection), then the data usage is minimal (it is less then 10% of the whole data usage)It is true for the G Nav too.

What are the newest features of Apple iOS 12?

I don’t know anything about iOS 12.And as a professional iOS developer, Apple updates don’t excite me at all. These updates usually force you to update your app, which in return means to update your XCode, which in many cases means to update your whole OS, and all of the above means that in the end your app which was working perfectly fine - now doesn’t work perfectly fine. This means that now you have to figure out how to make it again to work fine, i.e. make it compatible with the new updates so that it works and also stays in the App Store. New development takes time, sometimes lots of time which you were not anticipating. So far thank God that Apple doesn’t ask you to upgrade your MacBook Pro to support all of the above. And not to mention that new updates from Apple don’t mean that they were bug free. You know your XCode was working fine, but now after updating it is not working fine. Or you know your OSX version was flawless, but now it crashes, e.g. as it happens to me in highSierra. My MacbookPro which came installed with Mavericks and went with a couple upgrades in next 4 years, had never crashed since 2013 until I was forced to install highSierra and Xcode 9 on it in early 2018, which I had to to support iOS 11, resulting in XCode 9 sometimes freezing the whole system and crashing/rebooting the whole system, something which is a MS Windows hallmark, not that of Mac OSX. If it was not for the Mac’s Time Machine feature, I would have lost some of my very critical work. And with every XCode update, you run into some new issues which you didn’t have before. And the most annoying thing is that they remove all your keyboard shortcuts, and change some of their own keyboard shortcuts clearly showing that they never consulted iOS developers before making XCode related updates. In fact probably due to this very reason XCode is the most inferior IDE compared to all other major IDEs out there (which I use or have used), but that’s a different topic. So no, I am not excited at all about iOS 12. I don’t know what to expect in my current development phase, especially when it is in the middle of a production launch. As they say, if its not broken, don’t fix it.Tech companies have a habit of fixing unbroken things just for the sake of it, not because they needed any fix. And in this process, they mostly break them - to be fixed again in the next release. And this cycle continues.

How much data usage on a 2 hours driving using the Google maps on the phone?

On average, Google Maps uses about 0.67MB of data every 10 miles and 0.73MB of mobile data for every 20 minutes. According to our research, it uses less than Apple Maps but slightly more than Waze. Both Google Maps and Apple Maps have offline options so you can still get navigation without using any data on your trip at all.To your answer, it would be around 4.38 (approx) GB in mobile data for a two hour drive!!! It may be more or less. Thanks Rachael for the edits. GB would be apt here.:)

What counts toward your data usage on Verizon Wireless?

Any data that's used while your device is connected to the Verizon Wireless network (with the exception of FreeBee sponsored data) will use your monthly data allowance. Refer to the notification bar on your device to determine if you're currently connected to the Verizon Wireless network. If you see 4G (LTE), 3G or 1X, this means you're connected to our network.  This includes when you access the internet, watch a video, check your email, play games, use apps (e.g., Facebook®, Twitter®, Maps etc.) and more. Background tasks, such as syncing or location services, may also use data. Data usage is billed based on the amount of data sent and received (megabytes or gigabytes), and it can be charged per-use or as part of a data package.  Connect to Wi-Fi to use less data  When you're connected to Wi-Fi you won't be charged for any data you use because you aren't using the Verizon Wireless network. We recommend you connect to Wi-Fi networks you know and trust whenever they're available. This is a great way to manage how much data you use and avoid extra charges.
