Does Benadryl Cause Nasal Congestion

Can benadryl cause a sinus infection?

I have a pretty stellar medical history, worse thing I have ever had was a broken arm. No bronchitis, pneumonia, strep throat, sinusitis, mono, or seasonal allergies. If I get 1 cold ever two years that's a lot. No medical history, weight problems, migraines, nothing. I don't smoke or drink alcohol, eat well and drink tons of water, always excersize, etc. This year I got a sinus infection which blocked my eustachian tubes and I am still having issues. The only cause I can think of is taking antihistamines before I went to bed each night and this may have dried up my sinus cavity causing a bacterial infection to grow. I really have no idea, but I am destined to find an answer. I know it's not a big deal, but it is for me because if I know what caused it I may be able to prevent it in the future. Is this a possible scenario? Could taking too many antihistamines actually dry me up so much that the mucus didn't drain and caused an infection? I can't even blame it on the cold weather since I have been unemployed for the months leading up to it and rarely went outside lol. Thanks in advance...

Can I take an Alavert or Benadryl while using Flonase?

Benadryl is more for cough. Unless u have one it would not be very effective. Some benadryl's now contain a decongestant aswell, the decongestant is helpful for you but you'd be better off going with something else more specific for the nasal problems.
It depends which alavert you have too.The alaverts main ingredient is an antihistamine (loratidine)this would be very useful for your allergies as it stops the cause of your symptoms. as would be alavert containing something for nasal congestion (pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine)
Flonase contains a corticoidsteroid which helps with some of the allergy symptoms too.

So- you can use all 3 mentioned products as they are from different classes of drug but benadryl would not be too useful, alavert and the spray is useful. Try to use the spray everyday as it is a good preventer. when your allergies get real bad use the alavert.

When you use the nasal spray are you either standing upright or leaning forward slightly? Do not lean back, this is the incorrect way to use the nasal spray and you will often get a horrible taste.

To make the nasal spray more effective you could also use something like Fess before the flonase- it is a saline solution spray which helps to physically clear your nasal passage whether it be mucous or allergens, therefore more nasal area for flonase to have contact with.

Is ibuprofen good for nasal congestion?

Sometimes when you suffer from allergy or nasal congestion, you also have a headache that manifests as pain and pressure in your eyes, nose, cheeks and forehead. The pain may get worse upon bending over or lying down, and you may have additional symptoms including: runny nose, sore throat, cough and fatigue. you can take ibuprofen to relieve your nasal congestion but Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), including ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen, can cause allergic flares of hives and facial swelling, itchy and watery eyes, worsen asthma, breathing difficulty, and result in anaphylaxis. NSAID or ibuprofen sensitivity is common, especially if you have asthma or sinus problems.

How good is Benadryl for congestion?

No. Oral antihistamines are minimally helpful with congestion. OTC nasal steroids (like fluticasone) are the most effective medication, but take days to weeks to be fully effective. For short term use, pseudoephedrine (OTC but behind-the-counter) is effective, but has frequent side effects.

Can Benadryl be taken for a sinus infection?

I've used a different antihistamine similar to bendryl for clogged ears before and it seemed to work. I don't really know the pharmacology behind it, though.

As a sufferer of frequent sinus infections, I find that Mucinex D works the best (this is OTC at a pharmacy but you have to sign for it and show ID because of the decongestant present).

I know how miserable you probably are! I'm actually dealing with my 3rd sinus infection in 3 months right now and can't figure out why they keep recurring, but Mucinex clears me out better than anything. Hope you get to feeling better.

What is the best OTC medicine for sinus congestion?

pseudoephedrine(generic)/ Sudaphed(brand name) would be the most effective choice to combat sinus congestion, both the generic and the brand name are equally effective. If you are experiencing rhinorrhea/"runny nose" in addition to the congestion, you would need to take an antihistamine like diphenhydramine/Benadryl to alleviate that symptom. However, diphenhydramine/Benadryl can cause drowsiness. If the congestion is accompanied by pain you might want to try taking an over the counter analgesic like Advil or Tylenol. The medicines I've mentioned are all available over the counter. If these symptoms persist for longer then ten days, I would recommend making an appointment to see your doctor.

How is benadryl good for a sinus infection?

Benadryl treats allergies not infections. Your sinusitis might have started because of an allergic reaction but remember, there are many other causes of sinusitis such as all kinds of bacteria, viruses, fungus and mold that we All breathe in daily, allergies or not.And then all that glop that builds up in your sinuse whether your nose is runny or stuffy or not for sinusitis is the answer to this question:Linda Boguslav's answer to What are the best home remedies to clear a stuffy nose?Good luck

Can Benadryl or any other allergy medicine cause nasal rebound?

Antihistamines will not cause this (at least they have not for me in over 30 years of use). According to the article you linked, this is an issue with decongestant nasal sprays or decongestant medications. These are not to do with allergy. There are some steroidal nasal sprays for allergy, like Flonase, but usually these are prescribed for 'as-needed' use in conjunction with antihistamines. They are also not decongestant sprays (like you might use for a cold), so you should never be able to get to the point of physical addiction to them.If you overuse Flonase, all you get is that nasty Flonase-flavour running down the back of your throat, and a runny-ish nose.

My dog had benadryl and now?

What EXACTLY did your mom give the dog? Find the package and tell us EVERYTHING that was in the Active Ingredient panel.

How much does your dog weigh?

While it is true that Benadryl is often prescribed for dogs, the dosing and the schedule of administration are VERY DIFFERENT for dogs than for humans. DO NOT GIVE HIM ANY MORE MEDICATION!

Have you tried calling your local emergency animal hospital for advice? Or ASPCA Poison Control? this will cost $65-888-426-4435.

ETA: Honey, those are the INACTIVE ingredients. We need the ACTIVE ingredients.

Hopefully, you gave the dog straight diphenhydramine. Please tell me that's what it says in the Active Ingredient Panel (might be diphenhydramine HCL). But if there is ANYTHING else in the ACTIVE ingredient panel, you have a problem.

What happened is you OVERDOSED the dog. A vet would have told you to use .5 -1mgs per pound of body weight every 8 hours. So a 25 pound dog should have only been given 12-25 mgs and you gave her 40mgs. (Each pill is 25 mgs). And again, if there were OTHER ACTIVE ingredients, you have a big problem on your hands.

She will probably be OK if it was ONLY diphenhydramine, but I would still call a vet. AND DO NOT GIVE HER ANY MORE MEDICATION!

How will taking Benadryl help stop dependency on nasal decongestants?

Nasal decongestant sprays (which do not include corticosteroid based sprays) such as oxymetazoline have rebound effects which can lead to dependency if they are used for more than a few days in a row. If your congestion is due to an allergy then an antihistamine such as Benadryl can reduce nasal congestion by a different mechanism which will reduce the need for nasal spray. If you already have a dependency then Benadryl will not help that but it could limit any additional congestion from allergies.
