In 1985, I owned a company in Los Gatos, Ca. One dreary, drizzling morning at 3:00 am, I was driving home when I ran out of gas. Luckily, I was close to a ranger station at Lexington Reservoir that had a pay telephone at entrance. I went to the phone and called my wife to pick me up. She was cranky and told me to take a taxi. I told my wife, “Get your ass down here NOW. There’s two of them!” and hung up. I ran to the closed fire station off the road and waited under an overhang for my wife to pick me up. While I was waiting, I heard noises of things moving in the brush and weird “chittering” noises like insects make when they rub their wings together. I thought I was in trouble, but my wife turned up and I went home. The next day I went back to the spot and tried to find where the things went down the side of the road. There was a vague trail that led halfway to the lake, then disappeared. The trail just stopped. I live in Santa Cruz. I go to San Jose often. I ALWAYS remember that night when I pass the spot. My family is sick and tired of hearing this story when we pass that spot, but it is branded in my brain.

The longest was 24 days after the bite. In MOST cases, a few hours is enough time to get to medical help.If you have someone with you, they should be prepared to eventually assist breathing if you were bitten by a snake with neurotoxic venom, as this type of venom will cause paralysis of the diaphragm.Do NOT travel into the wilds anywhere without researching the dangerous flora and fauna first. You need to be able to clearly identify any dangerous snake species, and you need to know what type of venom they have so you can use the right first aid.
