Does Getting Braids Slow Down/stop Hair Growth

Does braiding promote hair growth?

The most important thing to factor in when having your hair in braids is, care and maintenance. It’s not as easy as just putting your hair in braids and expecting flowing results once you take them out.Simply put, braids do not make hair grow . They can however as a protective style, assist with retaining new growth.Everyone’s hair will grow every month. Some a little, others a little bit more. The greatest consideration is if that growth can be retained. When deciding to install, micro braids, box braids, crochet braid etc. you should consider factoring in a care plan/routine to have the best opportunity to retain growth. Before the braidsDeep condition and detangle your hair. You may also want to blow dry your hair out to minimise tangles. This will reduce any potential pulling and tugging when your braids are being installed.Maintaining the BraidsYour hair should be regularly moisturised to help with keeping your hair strands well maintained and reduce dryness and therefore breakage. When you sleep at night, wrap your braids in a satin scarf, this can also help to retain moisture in your hair.Taking out BraidsBraids shouldn’t be kept in for more than 1.5-2 months. The weight of the extensions on new growth for lengthy periods of time is likely to cause breakage. This is a key step. Some people report at least 1.5 inches of hair growth after taking out braids. However if braids have not been maintained well whilst they’re in and they’re not removed carefully, this growth will soon break off. Your braids should be moisturised before take down and carefully unravelled. When you get to the top of the strand, there may be some build up that fuses the hair together. Don’t pull! Take some olive oil and carefully separate the hair. Then wash and condition your hair.Wait a few weeks before putting in another set of braids. For more info on maintaining braids, visit Afropiqq.

How long does it take to grow long hair?

Depends on what kind of hair we're talking about. You'll have stubble in a day or two. Head hair will take a month or so to grow back out to a short length, and most likely years to grow out long. For body hair, it'll be undetectable that it was ever shaved in three to four weeks.Hair Usually grows approximately 6 inches a year, so in a week, it would be about an 8th of an inch, a half inch in a month and 6 inches in a year. Other variables would also be that hair grows more in the summer than the winter in the colder regions.A few things that you can do to ensure that your hair follicle remains healthy and your hair is undamaged so it grows the quickest it can, are:Take an inexpensive daily multi vitamin such as ‘ One-A-Day’ or even ‘Flintstones.’ Your hair likes zinc and biotin and both of the above mentioned vitamins contain ample amounts of these. Don’t waste your hard earned money on ‘Super Vitamins.’ Your body only requires so many vitamins per day and simply discharges the excess. You can’t put twenty gallons in a ten gallon tank. In some instances, over dosing on supplements can actually be fatal.Do not brush your hair. With every stroke you damage your hair more. Brush only as much as you need to style your hair, then stop.Buy a good quality brush or comb without a sharp plastic or metal ridges. This is one of the common factors leading to split ends. as is over brushing.Don’t be penny foolish. Buy good quality salon products. The chemicals used in many if not most over the counter shampoos and conditioners, contain very harsh ingredients such as ‘ammonuim laurel sulfate’ which can actually dry your hair out, and cause breakage and split ends. Even worse, many contain a form of silicon, and that can be very bad for your hair.Don’t consist your hair with tight bands, hats, braids and the like. These also lead to split ends and hair breakage. You can find out more, see this blog.

Why does your hair grow really fast after getting a perm ?

Your hair isn't growing faster; it's growing the same amount it's always grown. Getting a chemical process on your hair does not effect hair growth from your follicles, and hair growth is determined by your genes and nothing more.

It seems like your natural hair has a lot of shrinkage, so it seems like it's growing slow when it's not. You straighten your hair and eliminate the shrinkage, so you're hair is constantly "stretched" and that's why you can easily see the growth compared to natural hair.

Yes, relaxers are bad for your hair, but as long as you take care of it it can grow long and healthy.

Can you slow your hair growth?

Hello Joseph,Although controversial in some circles, if you follow the Moon cycles of having your hair cut or trimmed AFTER the Full Moon but BEFORE the New Moon, you have a chance of slowing down your natural hair growth. The further you get away from the Full Moon and closer to the New Moon, the better the chances are your hair will slow down.As I’ve explained before, my German maternal grandfather who was a very successful farmer, even during the Great Depression, used the Farmer’s Almanac to plant by the moon. The Farmer’s Almanac advised to plant for fastest and best growth from the New Moon until the Full Moon and to harvest at the Full Moon for the most plentiful results.Astrologers who follow the New Moon, Full Moon cycles agree with many of the principles provided in The Farmers Almanac.Whether you believe in astrology or planting by the Moon cycles, you can also do your own experiments. If you want to try other methods of slowing down hair growth, consider having your hair braided or dread locked.Your hair will continue to grow while in braids or dreadlocks, but the growth will be less obvious and you will not need haircuts with either or both styles, unless you decide to remove them. You can also consult with a dermatologist or physician who specializes in hair diseases and ask them if there are drugs you might take to slow hair growth. One issue with attempting to slow your hair growth with any type of drugs or substances might be unwanted side effects to your entire body.I can understand you might want to slow your hair growth if it has become a maintenance problem, but do your research before taking any drastic measures.Best wishes to you.DISCLAIMER: I neither sell nor promote any companies, their products, nor do I have any online shopping outlet of my own to promote.
