Why aren't all time zones drawn straight?
Theoretically, each time zone is 15° of longitude in width. This corresponds to a time difference of one hour.Now, if the time zones were strictly divided into uniform strips with straight lines, there would be a small problem. Imagine that somehow, your home comes in between two such time zones. You don't want one part your home in one time zone while the other is in another. Although it sounds cool (as you can have breakfast before even waking up, time wise), it isn't convenient.Hence, each country divides the time zone lines irregularly to match their boundary so that maximum part of it belong to the same time zone.Countries like the USA have no choice but to have different time zones (very wide latitude wise), while countries like India can alter the time zone line so that the whole country belongs to one time zone.FACT: China is the largest country to have only one time zone, despite covering 5 different time zones. The single standard time is an offset of +0800. Imagine the irregularity introduced! :D
