Does The Skull Dictate How The Face Will Be

What could cause a dog's skull to start caving in?

My friend's dog is about nine years old, she's a mutt and she's a part of the family. one day we thought she may have had a stroke because the left side of her face started drooping. and she started walking crooked. Two weeks later she is still walking crooked but now her head/face is to the point its completely drooped on the left and her head is actually caved in right above her eye. its the size of a softball and so deep that the top of her head is flush with her eyebrow. her eye is also extremely dark and cloudy but red and irritated too. I know cloudy means cataracts but I'm just mentioning every symptom. She is still happy as can be and living just fine despite the impairment though. what could cause this and what can we do? Is it just a stroke and there's nothing we can do? Please no animal activist comments about the vet or putting her out of her misery. she is an incredibly happy dog, and obviously in no pain. i have pics but I'm not sure how to put them up

How accurate are facial reconstructions from skulls?

The best quote about facial reconstructions is "it's a face he could have had."There are standard metrics for building up facial muscle depth based on ethnicity/ancestry, and there are tables of tissue thickness that forensic artists use. The nose is tricky, as there isn't a way to tell how much cartilage there is when only bone remains (same with ears). Sometimes you can get an idea if the nasal bones (at the bridge of the nose) are particularly long or bumpy. They'll use a generic nose and ears just to fill in the portrait. Additionally, think of all the characteristics above the skin that go in to identifying a person - hair, weight, makeup, eyebrow shape. Have you ever done a double take and said "Oh, I didn't recognize you!" when an acquaintance gets a haircut? Now imagine if they had no hair, a slightly different nose, the wrong eye color, and totally different ears. People have failed to identify family members based on facial reconstructions. When you have a famous face (like Richard III), people get lulled into thinking it's incredibly accurate - but when you have a portrait to base your nose and hair on, the reconstruction begins to look much more like the living individual.

Why is America willing to accept a President that is grossly unqualified to be our commander and chief?

How did we come to have Bush in the White House? I don't have a problem with him be conservative and I don't have a problem with him being republican. Also I don't think Kerry was qualified either, so let's leave him out of the mix. He had a C average in college. Shouldn't our president be at least a B average or better? He has a degree in Business that has nothing to do with government or politics. He is a terrible public speaker. He had a DUI when he was 30. He ran a few of his oil businesses into the ground. He was a governor, but he only had that job for a few years. How did this guy get to be our president? We couldn’t find anyone better?

How do I slim down my face like Hilary Duff????????

Although not recommended by me at all, some people have their back teeth removed (as many as 8, the back two upper and lower on each side) so give their face a hollower apearance. (this is what Cher did, and she also had cheekbone implants, she did not have her cheekbones removed).

I believe Hillary Duff's face thinned out not only from weight loss, but from aging, she has a more "adult" face now.

What affects the shape of a person's skull?

My ancestors have some Neanderthal genes. Their heads are really weird. When my cousin's first daughter was born, the doctor came out of the delivery room and told them she was ok, but they needed to be prepared because her skull had the most unusual molding problem he had ever seen. Then he told them that he thought it would straighten out in a week or so. My cousin said, at that point, “ No, it won't.” and then he turned sideways and showed the doctor his own head.We have lots of relatives on that side but this cousin and his daughter are the only two who have manifested that particular skull formation.I was watching ancient aliens or TLC, and saw some ancient skulls demonstrating that shape. I always wanted to know which parent carried the gene.UTs historic. No one ever ridiculed him for it. He had a good sense of humor, but everyone ignored that.

How can an anthropologist tell from skeletal remains what 'race' the person was?

Generally no. First of all, the term “race” is problematic - most anthropologists view it as an artificial and nonsystematic method of categorization. That said, there are some general things that anthropologists can infer from skeletons that will allow them to draw some conclusions about the physical characteristics it once was.Age and Size - I know this sounds obvious, but knowing how old someone was when they died will help you assess their build, particularly in conjunction with indicators of malnutrition.Gender - sort of. Women are generally lighter-framed than men, but there are instances where the skeleton of, for example, a very small-framed Asian man, has been initially misidentified as a woman. Additional characteristics, such as the surface texture of the back of the skull (due to male/female differences in muscle attachments) can be helpful, unless the skull is from a woman who carried burdens on her head (e.g. water, or market goods), in which case the muscle attachments will be more like those of a male skull. Angle of pelvic bones is also used, and is pretty reliable, but not 100%.Environment - sometimes. People who have lived their lives in high altitude regions from birt or early childhood will have a slightly different-shaped ribcage, as the thinner air results in deeper breathing that Ethnic shapes the body over time.Genetic trends - some ethnic groups have certain features that are more common than others. For example some east asians have a dental issue known as “tooth shoveling.” Not all, and it is found elsewhere, so you can’t say for sure that a skeleton with tooth shoveling is Asian, and one without is not - all you can say is that there’s a greater chance that the are.Anthropologists spent a lot of time on this question in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, but ultimately, they were unsuccessful making large-scale categorizations based on skeletons alone.

What can you tell about someone's intelligence from head shape and skull measures?

Correlation, not causation. If a person is malnourished in childhood their body and also their skull will not grow as much...  this may or may not affect their IQ, we do not know. All this study tells me is that people with big heads were LESS likely to have stunted development in childhood. There is no causation. It is likely meaningless in ANY society where child malnutrition is rare.Translation: hogwash for much of the world, possibly a weak indirect correlation in underdeveloped countries.
