Oh boy! I wanted to answer this because just recently I've become more comfortable with who I am. I've never lacked for confidence, but I've never been the face of self-love either. Although I'd like to be. I have a lot of insecurities, like my crooked teeth and bad skin, but I've come to the realization that I'm a human being. I was not made to be beautiful, but to survive.Here I am bare-faced on the left, clearly. I took this one morning when I woke up to a stream of sunlight on my face. I was having a good skin day (still a little splotchy) and I thought my eyebrows looked good. Do I like myself here? Well, yeah! I look tired (I was) and not nearly as conventionally attractive as on the right, but that's okay!On the right is me as full-faced as it gets. This was my first and only time wearing false eyelashes. I love wearing makeup, I truly do. I love buying it, watching tutorials, and doing other people's. I do it for myself, always. Sometimes I do it when I'm not even going out anywhere. My body is a shell and I want mine to look as rad as possible. I always wear makeup out, even if it is a little bit, because I feel like I'm not put together if I don't. To me, it's like wearing your pajamas to class or to an event. Not classy.BUT with that being said, I love both versions of myself- and all the versions in between. Our current society is obsessed with judging people. We judge girls who wear sweats and no makeup, we judge girls who are always dolled up to the nines, we judge girls for just about everything else that has to do with their image. At the end of the day it's all about loving who you are and what you're about.In terms of how men have treated both sides of me- I've never seen a difference! All my boyfriends have thankfully been lovely (for the most part) young men who would not only love my bare face but also embrace my winged eyeliner and red lips! I once even had a boyfriend who liked to watch me do my makeup because he found it interesting. Other than that, I don't really concern myself with what others think.No-makeup me is a viviacious, intelligent, emphatic, passionate girl with wit and humor. And so is dolled-up me. Always start with a moisturizer. A good makeup base primer helps too. Napoleon, Too Faced, and Smash Box have great primers. In the summer you should try to avoid as little face makeup as possible. The more tan you are the worse face makeup looks. Mineral powders seem to work better than mineral foundations. It's is hard for any liquid or creme foundation not to look cakey. Bare Escentuals has really good face powders that work just like a thick foundation, but don't look like you have a lot of makeup caked on. They even out your complexion wonderfully as well. I swear by this stuff!

use the elf eyeshadow primer and rimmel pro foundation primer. those both really help my makeup last! if you have oily skin then use a setting spray

Why does makeup look better after a little while (maybe an hour)?
More often than not, when you first apply makeup, you are applying to a mostly oil free and clean face. After about an hour or so, your face has begun to produce more oils. These natural oils on your face kind of "blend" with your makeup and create a more natural looking effect. Makeup can't really "sink in" to your face, the oils just create a more even look.

It could be to do with the light that you are doing your makeup in, try doing your make up in a completely natural light if you can, or the closest possible. This will mean you can see what your makeup looks like before and you can change it to how it suits you. In my experience I think that liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer is best to put over the concealer and over the whole face lightly because it gives a more natural look if used well, and then if a light cover of powder is dusted on it will stop it being shiny and looking greasy.
