When you say “ a guy” asked you out for dinner, do you mean some random guy on the street? Do you know him at all? Is this a complete stranger that just walked up to you and asked you to go out to dinner? Is he picking you up in his car or are you meeting him at the restaurant?If you know him, all of the other answers before this one will apply. If you don’t know him look for him on google so at least you can tell your friends this is who he purports to be. If I don’t know a date well, I tell my family or friends who it is just in case (unless he is a friend of a friend).

To me it sounds as though he does have some interest in you. He was checking to see if you were someone else so that he wasn't stepping on any toes (and mostly to make sure he wouldn't be rejected right off the bat.) If the random chats at break have increased from the previous amounts of conversation then that is another signal that points toward his interest in you.

The way that sounds is that you are asking him to join you to see a movie and possibly get some alone time with him. It may sound like you are making the first move on him and he wants you to commit to an answer before he commits to telling you if he has feelings for you. So, if you were to say that no I just wanted to see the movie and wanted someone to go with me, he might get hurt cuz he did have feelings or could be relieved cuz he does not have feelings for you. If you don't have feelings for him make it clear. Mixed signals are no fun.
