Dog had a seizure now she wont eat?

How do you stop a dog seizure?

Like earthquakes it’s a matter of magnitude or severity.I have a dog that has seizures of magnitude. He nearly died during his first seizureso he has to take medication. He gets a teaspoon of potassium bromide with his breakfast and if he has a seizure (his last for hours), I give him another medication: Valium. That stops the seizure.Another thing that helps is sugar but that only works if he’s responsive. Sometimes he is and sometimes he’s not. Since raising his dosage of potassium bromide, he hasn’t had any seizures for several months. The potassium bromide has side effects so it isn’t a great idea if the seizures are mild. Banjo has to have his blood tested every six months to make sure he’s okay.

Dog had seizure now is coughing?

My dog is a shih tzu. He had a seizure last week and this week had one again. Now he coughs and wheezes randomly (is that because of the seizing?). I wouldn't be surprised if he had another seizure soon. Do I go to the vet as soon as I can about this or is there no way of stopping it and need to just calm him down when he has his next seizure. He was perfectly fine until last week, he's always had an irregular heartbeat though.

If you have a dog that has seizures, what meds do you give them and how do they help?

Before administering any meds to your dogs, you should know that dog seizures have different stages and causes. In this manner, you will determine easily what are the right meds to give to your dog to minimize the occurrence of seizures. There are four basic stages to a seizure:1.) Prodome -- seizure that takes place by hours or days. It is characterized by changes in mood or behavior. 2.) Aura -- Signals the occurence of a seizure. Nervousness, whining, trembling, salivation, wandering, restlessness, hiding and apprehension are all signals.3.) Ictus -- The actual seizure. A period of intense physical activity usually lasting 45 seconds to 3 minutes. The dog may lose consciousness and fall to the ground. There may be teeth gnashing, frantic thrashing of limbs, excessive drooling, vocalizing, paddling of feet, uncontrollable urination and defecation. 4.) Post Ictus -- After the seizure, the dog may pace endlessly, appear blind and deaf and eat or drink excessively. The causes of dog seizures can be anything that hinders normal brain circuitry like Congenital hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), infections causing brain damage, brain tumors or idiopathic epilepsy.Veterinarians offer anti-seizure medications for your dogs. Some examples are Potassium Bromide, Valium (Diazepam) or Neurontin (gabapentin). These drugs minimizes the occurrence of seizures. Preservatives from dog foods also must be avoided such as ethoxyquin, BHT, and BHA as these preservatives can cause dog seizures. You must also be very careful when administering meds to your dog. The best thing for you to do is to consult your veterinarian about drug administration for your dog to be safer. Avoid feeding your dogs commercial foods but instead it would be much better to cook for your dog. My dog won't wake up, he had a seizure yesterday?

My dog, a doberman, had a seizure that lasted over 30 minutes and he had to stay at the hospital, while he was there he did not move at all and they said we might have to put him down...the next day we showed up and once we were there, vet was surprised that he tried to open his eyes and he urinated for the first time while being there....we brought him home but they told us if he doesn't wake up we have to put him down...today he was snoring and stretched his legs and took a couple of deep breathes but he is still in a heavy sleep...i am afraid he might not wake up tomorow but he showed signs of making it, I don't know much about seizures but I know it wasnt normal for it to last so long and he has been sleeping for more than 24 hours, I really want him to wake up he seems normal while he sleeps he even swallowed his saliva and took out his tongue but without opening his eyes....what are the chances that he will wake up?

My dog had two seizures in one day, and the vet said he has epilepcy?

Unfortunately, the most common reason a six year old dog would have seizures is a brain tumor. Epilepsy usually presents much earlier, around 1-2 years of age. Juvenile epilepsy starts when the dog is only months old.

If you want to know for sure, you should take your dog to see a veterinary neurologist. They can perform more specific testing, such as an MRI, or spinal tap to rule out a brain tumor. Routine bloodwork is very often normal with brain tumors, but is usually checked first to rule out more common diseases.

Depending on the severity of the seizures, and the frequency, your dog may require medication. Usually, if the seizures are longer than 5 minutes, occur in clusters, or occur more often than once monthly, anti-seizure medication is indicated.

And to scuba ryan - all vets are NOT in it for the money. If we were, we sure as hell would have picked a different profession! I'm sorry that at some time in your pathetic life a vet didn't do everything you thought they should, and actually had the nerve to charge you for their services. Go figure. Don't throw your generalizations around here. You have little to no medical knowledge, and you act as if you were a doctor. Why don't you go offer your personal opinions on a site that caters to idiots like you?

What would benadryl do if a dog is having a seizure?

It could make the seizure worse. Benedryl or diphenhydramine is an antihistamine used to decrease excessive mucoid secretions produced by histamine release in allergic and inflammatory conditions. One of the side effects is excessive sleepiness, but in some individuals wakefullness and neurological stimulation can be seen, including seizures. So I sure wouldn’t take one in an animal already prone to seizures. First aid of a seizure involves keeping the animal away from sharp objects, pools, etc so it doesn’t hurt itself during the seizure. If the dog has more than one seizure or does not seem normal shortly after the seizure is over, veterinary assistance is the best course to follow. There are a lot of prescription antiseizure medications available. Don’t ever try to use something over the counter for seizures.

What's wrong with my dog? had a small seizure and is dry heaving!?

my dog acted like that (heaving, shaking, mine didnt have a seizure but some do) when i put seargents gold on him. he must have licked some off of his fur. have you put any flea medication on him? if so wash him with original dawn.

also, i used to have a weenie dog who had a seizure (he didnt dry heave) we took him to the vet, it turned out he had lead poisoning from eating plastic beads. His digestive system no longer produced enzymes needed to get nutrition from his food, she put him on an enzyme (which was $100 dollars a bottle). i had to mix a little with his food everyday for the rest of his life, he never had a seizure after that.

ALSO, if your guy was outside he might have heat exhaustion, there are many possibilities.
