Dog Laws Scotland Help

What are the hunting and fishing laws in Scotland and Wales? Can I use a bow? Do I need a license if it's hunting for food?

You're going to think this reply is harsh. Perhaps it is, but it's needful and I explain why at the end.Bow hunting in the U.K. as a whole is banned. Absolutely. If you'd seen the same pictures I've seen of roe deer with crossbow bolts through non vital parts of skull/neck/rib cage, you'd agree with that. Fact is, mostly people want to use bows because they're silent compared to rifles and therefore are the chosen weapons of ill informed inefficient city bred poachers who care less than nothing for quarry welfare.A well placed rifle bullet will drop a beast dead. Even a well placed arrow doesn't do that, and the animal has to be followed by its blood trail. Occasionally it's not found, and if the heart has been missed then it's a death by slow torture in store for it. Very, very nasty. So - rifles it is.But what you suggest is laughably illegal in every way I can think of. You will not be doing any of these things in Scotland and expect to get away with it. If you try, you can expect to be arrested pretty dam' quick and maybe receive a custodial sentence as well.Whether for food or not, there is NO open ground in Scotland - or anywhere else in the U.K. where a hunting or shooting free for all exists. And in the U.K. the word "hunting" is used for pursuit with dogs. For gun sports, it's never "hunting" - it's either shooting or stalking. Our game laws for both fishing and shooting offences are comprehensive and carry hefty penalties for offenders. And our rural communities are well-knit societies where everybody knows who's-who and poachers arriving in an area are very quickly detected and dealt with.Don't do it, don't even think about it. To have a rifle for deer you need first of all a Firearms Certificate for centrefire ammunition of the correct calibre. And someone with the "knowledge" level displayed in your question will never succeed with such an application.Won't happen, that's the kindest answer I can give you. When you broach such levels of illegality the question has to be answered in such a way on this public forum that other readers will see what's been said and know these things are absolutely enforced in this country. Owning a gun here is 100% NOT a right, it is a privilege that has to be earned, paid for, and fully justified. Even air weapons are now regulated this way here, as of last year.

What to expect in England/Scotland as an American?

Going on a trip through the UK in a couple months, what should I expect? We plan on going as south as Canterbury to as north as Edinburgh, so what clothes should we bring? What type of rail pass should we buy? And how do the locals react toward Americans? Trying to be as informed as possible before we go, so all tips are welcome!

Why do people cut the tails and dewclaws off of dogs? The tail helps dogs balance and I heard that dogs that have had their dewclaws cut off can develop joint issues sooner than they may have otherwise.

Note: There are, of course, both ignorant and unethical people out there, but I’m choosing to ignore them in my answer largely because the answer would be self-explanatory: because they are ignorant and unethical. I chose instead to explain why thoughtful, kind, educated dog owners and breeders might still chose either or both procedures.Because they are also parts that can (and frequently do) suffer horrific injuries. Those injuries are most likely to occur while the dog is working in brush or otherwise far away from immediate veterinary help - if your dog ripped his dew claw off while hiking how long would it take you to carry him out and get him to a vet? How many weeks of confinement/e-collaring your dog trying to get an injury to heal does it take to negate his benefits from keeping his whole tail?(Warning: pictures are not pretty):Ripped dew claw:The caption with this photo tells me that the vet surgically removed the dew claw after the dog had seriously ripped it six times:Tail injured while hunting:And tail injuries are a bugger to get to heal:Now, you may not agree with the decision of a hunter that they would rather dock the tail and take off the dew claws at 3 days old than risk a horrible injury in the field. But what you cannot say is that they are choose to dock and dew in order to be cruel to the dog.You can decide, and as a pet owner the stats are probably in your favor for a pet dog, not to do it on your own dog and to only buy from breeders that leave both alone. But both are done for reasonable reasons and not for the sake of cruelty. They are also not done out of ignorance of the function of a tail or dew claw in dogs - spaniel breeders know about balance, thank you! - but because they are weighing other issues against the arguments for keeping the tail and dews and have decided in favor of docking and dewing because they believe it is best for their dogs.Second note: My breed of choice has a natural tail and I prefer that my dogs all have their dew claws (if I have a choice - I rescue mostly so I don’t always). I have no “dog in this fight” other than trying to be a voice of reason saying please understand why people do/did X rather than simply deciding that they are stupid/cruel and please don’t legislate to make things you personally don’t like but that do have good reasons sometimes illegal for everyone to do.

Is there a law against keeping a dog in a crate/kennel all day?

Crate training and leaving a dog in a crate for 14 HOURS are 2 different things and so yes, it is against the law. Call your local animal shelter and you can report this anonymously. They will go to the residence and the matter will be solved. You have to speak uo for these animals because they can't do it for themselves. Your call (even if they ask for your name or address) will remain anonymous. They will NOT give that info to the owners. Believe me, I know as I have reported someone over a similar circumstance. Poeple that are gone 14 hours a day shouldn't have a dog to begin with. What kind of life is this for them? Please save them from this torture and make the call.

Texas laws regarding hunting rabbits with dogs?

In Texas, cotton tail and swamp (marsh) rabbits are defined as game animals with no closed season nor any restrictions on hunting methods. Hunting with beagle dogs is practiced by a few hunters and was probably more popular in past years when rabbit populations were higher.

Is there a law against keeping a dog inside 24/7, never letting her outside?

I know someone that keeps his dog (a miniature pinscher) inside all day, every day. She pees/poos inside (and it only gets cleaned up every few days to once a week), only gets fresh water (from a tiny bowl) late at night if he goes home that night. She's extremely territorial and rips apart his bedroom carpet and pillows, etc.
I want to know if this is considered neglect and is there a law or a case that can be held against him from owning this dog.

Thanks, let me know if there is more information needed about the situation.

Where do I stand legally if my neighbour has poisoned my dog?

Some questions:Did you see the neighbour poison your dog? In other words, can you prove in court that a specific person poisoned your dog? If yes, how? What did you or your dog do to provoke your neighbour to poison your dog?If neither you nor your dog caused your neighbour to complain about anything, nor offended in any way, I can’t imagine that you are in the wrong. If you are asking whether you can sue, you better consult a lawyer.
