Dog Might Be Pregnant. Tips

My dog might be pregnant help!?

I am an expert dog breader and from what you describe I am pretty sure your dog is preggo, and has nothing to do with her just having her period.

I think it is very exciting to think of a litter of Silkahuahuas. When you come up with a great name like that for a new hybread the price of the puppies SKYROCKET!!!!

Hopefully you will have lots of puppies, and you can spread out the cost of the mommy dogs c-section out over each puppy. The c-section will range from $2,000 and up, so say you have four babies you will just add $500 more to the cost of each puppy. So if you were planning on charging $1,000 for a puppy now you will just charge $1,500 and that way the C-section is FREE!!!!

Start calling them Silkahuahuas and build up the interest in them and that will create a demand.

My dog might be pregnant...?

Let me start off first with saying I would like only NICE answers none saying how I am a bad owner, etc.

Okay, so the end of September, like the last week and half, my dog went into heat. She will be 1 year November 30. Me and my mom had been keeping her inside during the day, and only letting her out SUPERVISED. There was a dog next door, on a cable, and he was intact and showing interest in her. We were getting ready for school/work one morning and my dog was tied up outside, on the porch while we were getting ready. I came outside to get her and bring her back in because I was running late, she had slipped out of her collar and I couldn't see her. She always takes off when she gets off her collar, Just because she likes to run i guess. Well we had to go, and she was left outside unsupervised all day. This was one of the days during her heat cycle that (according to the internet) she was likely to get pregnant.

Well needless to say, I thin she is. I have looked up all kinds of info on pregnancy in dogs. And i''m really worried about her. Here are the symptoms; her teats enlarged,ALOT, her belly is really starting to bulge out. She used to have, like a sculpted body, i guess. Now shes lost her 'shape' and is 'thicker.' About a week or two ago, she wouldnt touch any food we gave her. now shes eating stuff, she'll take leftovers we give her, eat half of it, and run off and (we think) bury it; she comes back with dirt on her nose and paws. Can anyone, kind of confirm my assumption that she is pregnant? No rude answers about me being 'irresponsible' please.

Tips for caring for a pregnant dog?

Lets start with foods and feedings

At about 4 weeks into the pregnancy you need to start feeding your dog a puppy food. She will need the extra calories for herself and the developing pups if she is pregnant and continue feeding her puppy food for a few weeks after the pups have gone to their new homes. You should feed her 3 times the amount she usually ate before the pregnancy. ALS (All life stages) foods really do not have the right amounts of nutrients and calories for a pregnant dog and it would be best to change her slowly over a 2 week period to a high quality puppy food.

You will need to start doing extensive research on whelping and rearing of the pups which includes hand rearing. You have to take time off from work to be home when she whelps the pups and at least 2 weeks after. Not all Dams are good mothers and many times the owner has to step in hand hand raise the pups by bottle, syringe or tube feeding them every 2 hours around the clock.

Here is a link that you are going to need to read, I don't agree with their time line on weaning as the Dam should decide when nursing stops and I don;t agree with when to home the pups as it is illegal to home a pup before it is 8 weeks old. http://www.faqs.org/faqs/dogs-faq/medica...

Keep in mind that complications do, can and will happen. Emergency c-sections cost upwards of $2500... To give you an idea my last litter cost me over $6000.

If you do not have the money put aside for any number of complications that can happen and you do not want to do an emergency spay your dog could potentially die.

You will have to be the one to decide what is best for you and your dog but please make an educated decision and not one only based on your beliefs as the ones to suffer could be your dog and her entire litter.

Breeding and whelping is a serious matter and not something that should be taken lightly.

Some signs my dog might be pregnant?

They need to be seperated on her next heat as you may (probably)will have some(all) deformed puppies. Have you every watch the Wrong Turn the horror film, thats product of human inbreeding. Anyways I will try to help you I hope her and her puppies turn out fine. Please Do not sell these puppies for breeding purposes sell them to pet only homes. Thank You

Some signs your dog may be pregnant:

1. Her vulva will stay slightly swollen after their heat ends.

2. Her teats ( nipples will be more pronounced and hard.

3. You will notice a big change in her temperament. She may get quieter or lazy or more loving

4. Two weeks after breeding they may experience morning sickness. It can last a week or so. Give her saltene crackers before she gets out of bed and a few throughout the day

By now I know they are pregnant.

Your vet has to wait until day 28-32 of her pregnancy, to palpate the abdomen.

To do this lay your dog on her side, slide one palm beneath her and your other palm over her other side, just below her ribs. Gently squeeze your palms together and feel for little golf balls, these are puppies. If you become good at this, you will be able to count the puppies.

5. In the 4th week you may notice thickening of her sides, between her ribs and hip bone.

6. She may start to show any time after 5 weeks. Larger breeds may carry the pups up in her rib cage so it might not be so easy to notice.

7. Most dogs show at 6-7 weeks. You may notice a normal discharge somewhere in the last couple of weeks. The discharge is clear and has the consistency of thick vaseline and is oderless.
If you notice a discharge that is green or bloody and fowl smelling seek a vet.

8. In the 8th week you can feel the puppies kick and turn around. I just love this part

No. A bitch can get pregnant in seconds if both her and the male dogs are experienced and “efficient”, without getting stuck at all. They can get pregnant while they’re crated, behind wire fences, and generally speaking behind any fencce that’s not 100% solid so they can’t touch each other no matter how much they try.A bitch will howl, dig under cement walls (or IN cement walls) and will travel miles and so will the males: get through windows, break chains, break solid wood doors, get through walls. And them do their business in a matter of seconds, before you can reach them to stop them. There will be a small number of puppies in the litter if they don’t take their time: but there will still be 1–4 viable pups.

I think my dog may be pregnant?

I have a Chug (Chihuahua-Pug) and she is around 2 years old. I intentionally did not get her fixed because I wanted her to have puppies in the future. (I intend on keeping them in the family) She was just recently in heat near the end of April and we "Un-officially" (as in not through a breeder) bread her with a friends Pugeranian (Pomeranian-Pug) All we did was take home my friends dog and put them in the bedroom with food and water, keeping them together for a day or so. I never SAW them lock together but I noticed she finally let him try without being aggressive and kept backing up to him. Later on I heard her yelp.
Now she is being very lazy. sleeping all the time and always wanting to be around me. shes not eating as much of her food as normal and most of her swelling went down in everything BUT her nipples, they are still swollen.
its only been about three weeks and the vet said he couldnt tell quite yet but gave her a Worming and a Vitamin C shot just in case and will have me bring her back in about 2 weeks to see if he can see anything and if we need to put her on prenatal care.
Could these be early signs of pregnancy? Someone please help?

Well nothing much.... For medications... Leave that for now....only keep her clean and hygienic, make sure to keep her environment clean to avoid bacteria diseases etc... Most importantly watch her nipples and try cleaning that as much as possible with anti bacterial and disinfectants to prevent mastitis, u can use warm water to press the nipples gently as they get bigger..that's the only medications needed.... As for feeding in her early pregnancy stage, feed her with proteinous food like fish..etc.... Do not overfeed at early stage it can cause abortion..once it's second half of her pregnancy you can increase food ratio and you can add more edibles to her meal like meat, eggs, chicken...another scope ,feed her puppy food ...just that those foods are cost but it's actually good for the unborn litters. And make sure to always keep alot of clean water close to her, I mean really really clean...do not give her supplements except if it has " can also be given to pregnant dogs written on the supplement bottle... Supplements is not even necessary if she's eating good good things...Read more: What are the Best Ways to Care For a Pregnant Dog?

Yes.  Most female dogs will come into heat, also called in season, once or twice a year, though the timing can vary a great deal. The first sign your dog is coming into season will be a bloody discharge from the vulva.  You might not see this if she is meticulous in cleaning herself or has only a slight amount or discharge.  The discharge will continue for several days but will lighten to a transparent or pale straw colour. At the same time, her vulva will swell, and her behaviour may become erratic, goofy, or "bitchy."From the first hours of her heat period beginning, the boys will begin to take notice, whether neutered or not.  For most of her heat period she will scorn and scold them, but about a week in, after the discharge has lightened, she will become fertile and will generally permit breeding. For much more detailed information, you might find this site useful: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main...

I think i might be pregnant because my dog is acting funny?

She will look for a quiet place to have her pups, usually on your bed, She will pant heavily and will be very sedimentary, and lay on her side because she is having labor pains, You should give her an area that she can nest, a large shallow box about 2 or 3 times her size with something to lay on. She will lick a lot and will be very aggitated right before she starts giving birth, you should be there to help if needed to rub the pup with a rough cloth after she chews the cord off and place the pup near her nipples, she will usually let you help , if there is a pup that isn't breathing you should check its mouth and nose for anything in the airway, the rough cloth rub may get it breathing. If she doesn't want your help she will let you know but most will be ok with your help. It may take a while bettween pups so be prepared for a long watch.

You probably mean why is it bad for her to get pregnant on her first cycle because they can’t get pregnant until they go into heat.Imagine the puppy is a human. When she goes into her first heat, she’s around the same age as an 11 year old girl. Is that healthy and okay for a human? No, far from it. She’s too young, she’s too immature and she’s not ready to become a mother. Same applies for a puppy. And they are still puppies in their first heat cycle (most are 6 -8 months old on their first heat). Not only that, many defects that breeders need to test for to make sure they’re breeding healthy animals can’t be tested for until the dog is at least 2 years old. By breeding a dog at such a young age not only opens her up to a whole host of issues (she’s more likely to have severe personality changes, rejecting her litter and accidentally killing pups from whelping at such a young age), you could end up breeding an unfit dog that can pass serious genetic defects onto her puppies.
